There are many things that a coach can specialize in and be known for. Brad Stevens and his offense. Calipari and his recruiting. Beohiem and his zone defense. Huggins and his press ect ect.

Is there anyone better at player development than John Beilein?

    1. He made Nik Stauskas a lottery pick.

    2. Caris Lavert wasn’t an NBA prospect until a few years in Ann Arbor. Would of been a lottery pick if it wasn’t for injuries.

    3. Trey Burke was 84th in his class and won multiple college awards. Another lottery pick.

    4. Hardaway Jr, McGary, Wilson all first rd picks.

    5. Mo Wagner looks like a good prospect and even Abdur-Rahkman looks like he should get a spot in the G-League.

    6. But my BIGGEST POINT is Charles Matthews. I watched him at St.Rita’s in HS and thought, "This kid is ready for D1 right now, today." Then he went to UK and was a shell of himself. No confidence, looked scared to hold the ball. I think the spotlight of being a player for UK and having BBN watching his every play got to him. He just wasn’t the same player I watched in HS. Then, he transfers to Michigan and starts producing immediately. MOP of his region and was 1 of only 2 Michigan players who showed up to play today in the Final 4.

So, honest question, who out there in college develops players better (or just as well) as Beilein?

Even though UVA will never bring in top recruits, I say Tony Bennett is up there when it comes to talks of development.

Charles Matthews had a hernia in his hip his freshmen year that limited him. He didn’t tell the staff about discomfort until after the season was over and immediately had surgery once they looked into it. For what it’s worth, he intially injured himself going into his senior year which is why we saw his ranking drop from top 20 player to late 40’s because he player through the injury.

Last year alone Dana Altman got 3 players no one was talking about into the NBA. Jordan Bell, Dillon Brooks and Tyler Dorsey.

His team’s are starting to get potential recruits attention.
