Plan to eliminate lottery tanking

Thoughts on Gilbert Arenas saying that the NBA should have a separate playoff for the lottery teams to compete for the #1 pick to eliminate tanking?

How about the top 4 picks

How about the top 4 picks chosen by lottery balls with the 5th pick open to any team?

A team would be less likely to tank if they could fall to 6. And each team has a 3.33% shot at getting the 5th pick.

That would give you 31 first round picks.

What about a serpentine 2nd round where pick 32 goes to the NBA champ?

So the worst team in the league would have the last second round pick (62).

Possible picks at 6 and 62 instead of 4 and 31 would help to disincentivize tanking.

best and most harmless way is

best and most harmless way is to make the worst record team to not parcitipate in the lottery and to automatic get the 4th pick, this way all teams compete not to be the worst team...

tough sell to get the players

tough sell to get the players playing more without more money, and has the potential to exacerbate the problems facing small market teams at the bottom of the league. If you're a bad team the better teams that just missed the playoffs will Win the tourney, they get the best draft prospects, and the bottom teams fall further behind them. A playoff team that falls out one year will get reloaded with a new star and jump back into the playoffs but the worst teams in the league will stay at the bottom hoping to hit on a draft pick in the 12-14 range and no free agent will even consider jumping on that garbage fire. So it'll be a death warrant for the bottom 5 teams in the league. Atleast as I understand his plan.

How about make every team

How about make every team nominate 3 players to draft and they drop ping pong balls to see which of the three the team selects with their pick.. Imagine the drama when the clear cut number 1 drops 20 spots..!

To clarify, team A gets the

To clarify, team A gets the #1. They nominate Ayton, Doncic, Porter Jnr. Lottery ensues, they get Doncic. Number #2, team B selects, Ayton, Porter, Bamba.. Ping pong balls drop, they get Ayton. Continue for entire draft...

I always thought teams should

I always thought teams should be put in the lottery where they finish in their conference and based on worse record to seperate positions. That way 15th team out East or West are 1 and 2, 14th teams 3 and 4 and so on. So the incentive for too many teams to tank in one Conference could be limited.

Points system

I think a point system would be a good idea, EX= worst record 100 points, 2nd worst 80 points etc, each team could assign points to a player prior to draft, EX= Memphis puts all its points to Ayton, if no other team has more than 100 points to Ayton then Memphis gets the rights to draft him, I think allowing a team to keep their points for a 3 year period before they expire, and a team could use these “draft points” in trades.

This could make the draft and “draft points” a very methodical process. I’m sure theirs holes in the system but an idea I’ve had for a while.

I Wish they would Return to

I Wish they would Return to the Original Lottery when all 14 teams have an Equal chance at the Top Picks. Imagine if Denver could add a Star like Like Ayton, Porter or Bagley to their current cast of players Jokic, Murray, Harris & Company? Pretty interesting young team. Or if the Spurs miss the playoffs and get a chance add a star? That'll bring some excitement back to the Lottery.

Give all the teams that don’t

Give all the teams that don’t make the playoffs an equal chance at the top pick and draw them at random on live TV so we know you’re not jacking with it.

No team is going to openly rank to miss the playoffs for a minuscule chance at the top pick. If this means the worst team doesn’t have the best shot at the top pick then I say good. Right now the worst teams are that way by design and if that’s your stated goal, then you shouldn’t be rewarded for it. These teams have forfeited the right to the top pick in the same way drunks forfeit the right to drive.

What hurts the NBA with

What hurts the NBA with tanking is that it’s too many games being played. A team knows by December, whether or not they are going into the lottery or playoffs. The NFL never has a problem with tanking because there’s only 16 regular season games.
