As the NBA regular season enters it’s last week, Philadelphia’s front office has some cause for concern as far as draft positioning goes.

As of today Miami fell out of the playoffs and have the 10th worst record, meaning they’d keep their pick (top 10 protected) unless some lottery magic moves up one of the bottom 4 lotto teams…and with OKC’s recent string of losses they’re unlikely to finish with a better record than the Wizards, meaning their pick owed to Philly (top 18 protected) will fall in either the 14 or 18 spot depending on if they make the playoffs or not. The Lakers are also a lock to finish with the 4th worst record and without a lot of lottery luck for Philly, they’ll also keep their pick (top 5 protected.)

If the season ended today, Philly would go into the draft lottery with only 1 of 4 possible 1st round picks. That’d have to hurt as this is considered a pretty strong draft and having multiple picks would allow them the flexibility to swing for the fences, fill holes, and/or package & trade up. I’m sure they’ll be watching the standings with a close and concerned eye this final week. The worst case scenario is looking like a strong possibility at this point.

I don’t think they are nail biting.  The Heat won last night and those teams are so bunched a single win you jump 3 teams.  The pick is protected next year then wide open the following year.

They’re also positioned 3rd, but could tie with the Lakers if they go 2 and 4, while the Lakers go 0 and 5. It doesn’t seem likely, but if they’d did, they’d lose a few more lottery balls for the highest/most important pick.

This wouldn’t bother me that much if they are able to get Russell with their first pick. It is no secret they are desperate for some backcourt scoring. The team already has a more then solid front court of the future with Nerlens, Embiid and Saric in 2017 most likely.

If they bring Wroten back he will help as well even though he can’t shoot but he can score with over 20 points per 36 minutes this year. The flexibility would be nice if they could draft another guard that can stretch the defense like a Devin Booker in the middle of the first round but it won’t be the end of the world if they can’t. The nucleus of the team will already be set moving forward and it won’t be that difficult to plug in another 2/3 that can play (I really wish they kept KJ McDaniels…maybe they will bring him back).

The additional picks could certainly add some depth or would atleast be decent assets for trades but a lot more hinges on Embiid’s health and development as well as getting this years lotto pick right (AKA drafting D’Angelo). Also they are going to have two of the first 5 picks in the 2nd round which they did very well in last year adding KJ and Jerami Grant (who has shown good potential at least). It would be nice if they could maybe land an R.J Hunter or Buddy Hield type to make shots with a 2nd round selection.

The Lakers pick could well depend on where the lottery balls finish as last year the Pistons ended up moving down a spot or two when the Cavs won the lottery and moved up.

The Sixers biggest need is that their own first rounder doesn’t get bumped down in the lottery to say 5th or lower. They can only finish with 4th worse record if all results went against them and currently they are 3rd.

The pick from Lakersis what Hinkie hopes comes over this year as the Lakers are likely to make steps in the summer to get back into contention and he traded MCW with the hope of getting a high as possible top 10 pick back for him. If next year it ended up being say 18th pick then the gamble didn’t pay off.

Likewise Miami wih Bosh back next year and Thunder with KD especially are likely to return much lower picks to Philly. These won’t be a disaster but I agree Philly could possibly have 4 top 20 picks or only 1 high pick this year which would make a huge difference to Hinkie’s draft strategy. He would have huge trade up options with even a couple or one additional first rounder to compliment Philly’s main pick.

They also have 5 second round picks including two in 31-35 range which are always highly tradeable so whatever happens Sam Hinkie is likely to be the busiest GM leading into the draft.

If I am Philly I am trying to end up with Justise Winslow and Sam Dekker.

Winslow projects as a really good wing defender.  He can also get to the basket, and shot fairly well from 3.

I think you can put him at the 2 even though he might be more of a 3.

If you put him at the 2, then they have the potential to be a really big, long team with Tony Wroten possibly starting at point guard next year.  He and Winslow wouldn’t shoot that well, but it would be a long, aggressive backcourt to match their two bigs (Embiid and Noel) inside.

Then, I think Sam Dekker would be a good fit for them at the 3.  He is also 6’9 so I think he can play some stretch 4.  With he and Winslow I think they get two of the best wing players in the draft.  Then Dekker can be an outside threat while Winslow can drive.  Both guys can hit the boards.  Winslow can guard the tougher matchup on the wing.

With their second round picks (that they will probably have to package a few to move up for Dekker), they can go after point guard depth, shooters, then a 4th/5th big man type player.

It’s definitely a suprising situation, I don’t think Philly or any NBA exec would have thought that the 76ers could lose out on all of their other acquired picks.

But in the end, this doesn’t really hurt what Philly is trying to do. They are still loaded with assets which they can flip for a vet or for a high pick this year even.

If the 76ers dont get the pick this year, it is top 3 protected next year. I don’t think the Lakers are going to get the big names free agents like Aldridge or Gasol this year. The Lakers are rebuilding and a Kobe, Julius Randle, Top pick, and B or C level free agents won’t be enough to make the playoffs in the west. So the 76ers will proably get  pick in the 6-12 range in 2016.

I’ve been saying for awhile that I think the Lakers will most likely keep their pick this year (knock on wood) statiscally speaking anyways.  So 76ers will get it next year.  If the Lakers have their best case scenario off season I still think they finish around 10-12 in the lottery next year and that is best case.

I have also been saying that for the Lakers to truly turn it around in a quick fashion they will have to get lucky, meaning they will have to somehow end up in the top 3 next year with lucky ping pong balls.  Not likely but that’s the kind of luck that is needed for this team to get back into contention within the next 3 or 4 years.

I imagine Philly gets the pick next year somewhere in the 8-12 range.  Is what they get in that range going to be a better player than MCW?  Only time will tell.  As of right now I think the only way that 76ers can come up ahead on that trade is if they snag the 6th pick this year or a top 6 pick next year.
