The Pelicans FO has done a pretty bad job building the team besides lucking into the #1 pick at the right time, and as a result they are still a ways away from becoming a perennial playoff team. Sure they’ve had unlucky breaks – Gordon and Holiday became incredibly injury prone after acquiring them. However Gordon was never worth a Max contract in the first place and the Pel’s paid a really high price for Jrue in two lottery picks. Tyreke Evans doesn’t play a winning brand of basketball, and it seems they overpaid for Asik as well last year. 

Anderson and Gordon’s contracts are up, and Jrue/Evans have one year left each. The only core long term asset this team really has is AD. That’s a good place to start at least, but they need to draft whoever they like best at 6, regardless of position. I personally like Jakob Poeltl a lot (maybe even as the #3 prospect in this draft), and think he would be an excellent fit next to AD in the frontcourt. This frees them up to make a decision on Holiday as PG of the future next offseason, and/or target the strong class of guards/wings in the 2017 draft.

To say the Pelicans are in an excellent position seems incohherntly wrong to me.  They have arguably the best piece in the NBA in AD, but after that they are a team that looks lost.  They overachieved last year by reaching the playoffs (Thanks to the KD injury bug) and inexplicably fired their well respected head coach after doing so (Monty Williams), only to bring in a complete wildcard in Alvin Gentry who thought getting Anthony Davis to shoot more 3’s would make them title contenders.  Fast forward one year, and they are coming off a disgraceful 30-52 season in which they started extremely slow and never rebounded from.  And their prize from their aggregious error is a number 6 selection in a draft that has what most people view as 2 blue chip prospects (Simmons & Ingram), a couple total scratch off lotto ticket (Bender & Murray) and two ready to contribute/low ceiling players in (Hield & Dunn).  And basically at 6 they get whats left, whoever that is is anyones best guess at this point.  I think in a perfect world they get Dunn and he can become the Robin to AD’s Batman and they become a bottome feeder in the Western Conference playoff picture (6-8) until AD bolts out of town.  If I was in charge of New Orleans, I’d seriously consider moving AD, to perferably the 76ers, or perhaps the Lakers or Celtics and acquiring a top pick, as well as other prized assets (Anthony Davis would fetch a king’s ransom at this point) to go with that number 6 selection and just blowing it up.  As constructed the Pelicans are years away from contending even with an elite talent like AD, so why not sell high, buy some time and acquire a shitload of assets to build a young team around moving forward.  AD is officially in no-mans land in New Orleans.  #FREEANTHONYDAVIS

This is what I would do if I owned/was P.O.B.O(president of basketball ops) of the pelicans the would do the following:

 They need to fire that idiot of a GM he is essentially destroying that franchise:Max contracts for injury prone players and 60 mill for a player that clearly doesn’t fit the system of the coach he hand picked(SMH)…

Draft Jaylen brown (if available) as the Pelicans have no small forward Or best SG available out of murray/hield and I wouldn’t want multiple picks in this years draft. Next years draft(2017-2018) is PG heavy apparently(Think 09 draft heavy) which suits them better as I am guessing Pelicans may still be in the lottery unfortunately..

Fire you training staff as the players can’t stay healthy(which is also on the players but something has to change as the record is starting to speak for itself)…

I would however hold of on trading AD for two more seasons: This offseason(2016-2017) see what pieces you can get and how they work with A.D if it doesn’t improve much then in 2017-2018 offseason you reassess

Next offseason(2017-2018 once draft order has been established) If nothing has improved and A.D still can’t get passed 65+ games you think about full rebuild…As you can’t have a franchise player that can’t stay on the court as you go as they go unfortunately..

 So you would trade A.D for a solid starter or two(on reasonable deals) + as many picks as possible:1-2 1st rounders in 2017 draft( it has to be a top 1-3 pick+ a top 20 pick-other team may have to trade for if it doesn’t have it) and one in 2018 draft (top 3 protected only then have proviso’s after that) as this would offer the best chance at a clean slate and value for a superstar/franchise player ..This is the sort of deal Utah got for Deron williams(a franchise player at the time) so it could happen..

Gordon contract expiring helps. As stated the only real asset is Anthony Davis and the only other good player on the team (when healthy) is Holiday. Asik isn’t worth his contract so package him with Tyreke to get a veteran and a late lottery pick in 2017. At 6 in this year’s draft I think Jaylen Brown should fall in there lap finally a legit talent at SF. If he’s gone Murray or Hield would be solid next to Jrue. They’re  not going to hit a home run off the bat but they can take some solid steps in the right direction. If they have given up on Jrue they could package him with Asik for a pick and bring in Dunn as the point guard of the future. I love his attitude, hunger and mentality I think he has the tools and makeup to be a star in this league sooner than later.
