I was looking around at the drafts that we have had since around 2008 and was shocked at what I had seen..  People had regularly said, since James was drafted, and the draft with Paul and Williams, every other draft was weak..  However, look at this:

    2008 Draft:
2 people drafted in the 1st round are out of the league.
Rose has already been MVP and is a HOFer.
    3 have been All-Stars.
13 1st round picks are starters. 2 2nd round picks are starters.
28 1st rounders are rotation players. 7 2nd rounders are in a rotation.

    2009 Draft:
Victor Claver is the only 1st round player that hasnt played and its because he never signed.
This class has already had 2 ROYs and may have a 3rd if Rubio wins..
    Griffin has been an All-Star.
12 1st round picks are starters. 3 2nd round picks are starters.
29 1st round picks are in the rotation. 12 2nd round picks are in a rotation.

    2010 Draft:
All 30 1st round picks are on a team or a D-League team with a NBA team. 12 2nd rounders are.
7 1st round picks are starters. 1 2nd round pick is a starter.
25 1st round picks are rotation players. 7 2nd round picks are rotation players.

The 2011 draft is looking pretty good but has yet to be decided..

Also, in the 2007 draft, you got a HOF player in Durant.. That alone makes the draft a nice one.. Not to mention numberous starters..

Have the drafts been stronger than originally thought or is my perspecive skewed??

I think it’s just easier to say that a draft will be weak and then have all the players become good players rather than saying this is such a deep draft and have a ton of bust players. Most notably Greg Oden who was stated in ESPN magazine at the time to be the kinda guy you build a team around, a Tim Duncan-like franchise player.

I think it’s also just because there hasn’t been as much star power like there was in those two drafts you mentioned. There’s not another LBJ, Carmelo, Wade, Bosh, and others all coming out of the same draft. Nowadays its like one or two strong players up at the top and then the rest of the draft is like serviceable role players.

I think most drafts average about 4-5 stars and 1 superstar…. I think the big difference is really the superstar talent. Great years have 3-4 superstars. Bad years have none.

It’s also VERY hard to judge this early. It takes players some players at least 4-5 years to get their game together. e.g. Lowry.

2003: (great) lebron, wade, carmelo, bosh. then: kaman, hinrich, david west, josh howard. That’s a great year.

2004: (bad. very shallow) D Howard, then jefferson, josh smith

2005: (average) Cp3, deron. then bogut, felton, bynum, david lee

2006: (bad). Aldridge, Rudy Gay, Bargani, Rondo, Lowry

2007: (bad. very shallow) Durant, then horford. Oden wouldn’t have made a huge difference, still very shallow.

2008: (great) Rose, Westbrook, Love, Eric Gordon. then brook lopez, gallinari, ibaka, ryan anderson.. still waiting on beasley, mayo, bayless, anthony randolph

2009: (good. very deep) griffin, then harden, evans, rubio, curry, jrue holiday, jennings, lawson, darren collison

2010: (average) wall, cousins? monroe? then favors, turner, etc.

I agree. 2008 and 2009 were very good years. Otherwise the recent drafts have been pretty mediore or bad. It looks like 2011 will go down as a bad year, but it’s far to early to tell.

J.R. Giddens shouldnt have been drafted. The more reason to why I was pissed that Billy Bad Ass did not go in the 1st.
