Im Your FatherParticipantA pretty good comparison just occurred to me. Mario Chalmers. They seem like very similar players. Smith is probably a little more explosive and Chalmers is probably a little better shooter, but they have a lot in common. I also think they will be drafted around the same place, as early 2nd round next year seems likely for Smith.

Im Your FatherParticipantI guess I thought the knock on him coming into the league was always the fact that he wasn’t really a pure point guard, and didn’t handle the ball a lot at KU. Both are guys who can initiate an offense, but neither have great instincts at the 1. Also in terms of scoring, Chalmers played on much more balanced teams, where no one was averaging that many points.

whyyouhatingParticipanthomeless mans Ben Gordan lol jk
I like the kid but Ben was a beast in college and a better scorer.
Smith does play better D, Ben is a innocent bystander on D0 - Posted on: Tue, 03/30/2010 - 3:50am #273000
stanford hoopsi like the comparision althought i cant say nolan can score more because chalmers had more options on his team..look at all the options on his kansas team. im sure others have scored more then wall and turner but they probably didnt have as many options on there team. you put nolan on that kansas team and hes not scoring all those points

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantHave you seen Duke’s roster? Jon Scheyer is a future NBA player, 2nd rounder. Kyle Singler maybe a late first rounder. Mason Plumlee is a top 10 pick next year. They have plenty of options.

JNixonParticipantI don’t think Smith is very talented offensively, nor do I think he’s a real good ball-handler for his size, but I do see the Chalmers comparison. Especially since Chalmers played off the ball in college just as much as Smith has. Both are kind of overachievers and hard-workers too. They are similar, but I think Smith’s role will be to knock down open jumpers and play tight D if he’s in the NBA.
Smith is also very similar to former Duke player Daniel Ewing, who also played in the NBA for a little while.

JNixonParticipantYea, he definitely seems like a legit draft pick after the way he’s been playing.

blackflash234ParticipantUnlike Mario Chalmers, Nolan Smith can actually score in bunches. Chalmers was always a guy that averaged 12 points per game in college and Nolan right now is averaging 17. Nolan isn’t a point guard at all and Marion Chalmers is.
