Been a bit since I last posted, but we are right around the corner…

Noel voiced his unhappiness, says the three "starting" center situation makes no sense.

Apparently he was working out in the offseason with Sixers trainers in Massachusetts?  He might even be jealous by all the attention Simmons and Embiid are getting around town…

Brett Brown last week said he’d be happy if Noel doesn’t take another jumpshot in his career, wow.  They also want him to pattern his career after Bismack Biyombo…

So Nerlens wants out, blamed management for the situation, Brett Brown is doing nothing to help him feel welcome.  Nerlens feels he is a starting center in the league.

    I have several questions.

    1.  Is Noel a starting center in this league?  He has a thin frame.  His hands have never been good.  Offensively, he’s very limited, weak jumper, hands are weak to collect passes.  Defensively, he’s very good but against true centers he just doesn’t have the size.  His rebounding is average.  He’s best as a help and perimeter big-man defender.  I actually agree that he’s best served in the Biyombo role, only Biyombo is a tank and a very good rebounder.  The problem is Nerlens was the 6th pick and former captain of this team.  Its hard to ask him to take a back seat being that he is senior to the other players, and the guy could be due a lot of money, why relegate him to a backup, doesn’t seem fair to the guy’s professional career.  Ultimately though, he could be a weapon on a good team as a backup center.  He just doesnt have the offensive tools to play as a starter.  He’s a guy off the bench that keeps the defensive tempo, I don’t think he’s a starter.

    2.  Whats his trade value?  Atlanta, Boston, Houston, and San Antonio are some teams rumored to be interested.  The guy was the 6th pick and statistically puts up great defensive numbers.  The problem is the logjam.  Ideally I want him coming off the bench and slowly developing his offensive game and strengthening his frame simply by maturing.  Embiid’s minutes are going to be limited and the Sixers don’t have a backup center unless you play Okafor at Center and Saric and Simmons at the 4.  So Noel would be an ideal backup playing significant minutes with a minute-restricted Embiid.  He gets showcased and ideally gets traded before the trade deadline.  If he gets traded to a contender I’m not sure how much you get back though.  I’m still not sure what his trade value is.  Rumors over the summer had Noel for Teague, or Noel for Ariza or Beverly.  They were just rumors though.  People are talking about just letting him walk over the summer, not renewing his contract.  The Sixers have too many holes to just let Noel walk.  I’d trade Noel for a young 3-and-D player and a backup center, maybe to PHX.

Even given the injury risk to Embiid, we know that Noel and Okafor cant’ really play together.  In my mind it was never Oak I wanted to move, I always wanted to move Noel.  Okafor does things as a big man that a freakish and too easy.  Noel is a replaceable big-man defender, a luxury item when you have Joel Embiid.

But I still think they need to let the half-season play out. Noel is a good dude, so just play out the first half and go out there and earn your "starting center" minutes and paycheck that you think you deserve.  Prove to everyone that you can play, show us how you’ve improved.  Then we can trade and make him happy if he’s a starter.  Don’t just claim you are a starter without proving it.

Interesting in all this is Ish Smith talking about Embiid playing against (and destroying) legit NBA guys in practice last year.  I wonder who Embiid was going up against?  Noel?  Oak?  or Elton Brand and Landry?  If it was Noel, maybe he knows his time would be relegated to backup here and he wants to go out and get the starter money and paycheck.

Centers are needed in this league, but Noel can’t fool us.  He needs to show us he is a legit starter by getting stronger and working on his offense, defense, and rebounding.

Right now, talk is cheap.  No need to talk before training camp.  Maximize your value and then we can send you off.  Philly needs to talk to him and tell him this, that the best situation will be when he comes in and kicks butt, and makes himself tradeable.

Right now his value is too low for the Sixers to trade him.  A late first round pick is not enough for me.  Letting him walk makes zero sense since he was the 6th pick and is a stud defender.  I don’t want a first round pick in next year’s draft.  If we trade him, let’s get some assets to help us win.

Will be looking up possible trade scenarios for Noel, post ’em if you have ’em in mind!

His trade value is low right now because he’s a RFA next summer.  Whatever team trades for him will have to get him to agree to an extension or risk losing him after the year.  With the way free agents are getting paid somebody is going to overpay him with a huge offer sheet making it hard to match.  I love what he brings on the defensive end.  However, due to his lack of offense it would be hard to pay him a large salary unless the team has enough scoring around him.

We have no idea how he will repsond if put on a good team such as the Celtics. I don’t see any team giving up a starter or first round pick for a guy they aren’t sure about. Ecspecially being a RFA next year.

I’d take a look into the kids character. As far as work ethic goes he hasn’t improved offensively or added any offensive game since college. He hasnt bulked up enough. He’s constantly in trouble which the 76ers did a good job covering up until enough was enough. As far as his skills defensively, rebounding and passing they are definitely there but he seems more like a John Henson type block/stats hunter guy. Once you pin him down in the post or get him in open space moving his defence can faulter.

Now I am a supporter and think Noel can have a very bright career but those are the facts, his career has not started off as great as the stats show. I highly doubt he has nearly as much value as Okafor and I’m almost certain the 76ers would let him walk if another team throws money at him.

Cal called him the highest character guy he had during that dumpster fire season where they lost to Robert Morris in the NIT. When you’re in a culture of losing for long and you have people around you doubting you, you’re obviously not going to respond well.

As for getting better, that cliche that if you’re numbers don’t automatically reflect improvement it means you’re not trying needs to die quick. So because Dwight and DJ aren’t making free throws, it means they aren’t practicing right? It’s hard to develop when you have a fest of people who play the same position as you clogging up all your time to develop. Also, I’m sure with Embiid’s injury he was most likely the focal point of any training.

The Sixers just did Noel wrong, it’s time for him to go. He could truthfully have a great defensive impact on a playoff team, he is by no means a star or anything of that matter. But he’s no bum like some of you are trying to paint him to be.

Noel averaged 11.6pts per36 on 46.2% shooting his rookie year. Then 13.7pts per36 on 52.1% shooting his 2nd year. It’s an oft’ repeated myth that his offense game hasn’t improved.

I was looking at overloaded rosters to try to find someone that could be traded.

The Trailblazers signed Crabbe and E. Turner. Maybe they could do Crabbe for Noel and the 76ers could sweeten the pot a little with a future pick.

Nick Young for Noel. If the 76ers decide to just hit eject and get some help in other positions. He could be  abridge guy for a couple years until the draft or sign a replacement.

If Noel underperforms and Terry Rozier under performs. They could swap.

Really not very many PG/SG/SF that might be on the market that I can see. I agree they will have to wait until the season starts for some teams to look at the rosters and decide if they can move someone for Noel.

Because no one else in the NBA does

I think he’s upset b/c that Monster Embiid is tearing him apart in practice & Okafor is probably doing close to the same thing & Noel realizes

    "Oh no – I’m in a Contract year & I’m 3rd string…"

Yeah he is unhappy. It broke last night and he said the same today. I would trade him asap before it becomes a problem. If Embiid is healthy then Noel has to be traded. A smart deal would be to DC for Oubre or another team with a swingman that the Sixers need like a Mclemore or Boston for Hunter or James Young.

Please tell me you didn’t just suggest Noel for James Young.

Noel is a solid modern-day center.  He doesn’t need the ball and advanced stats (hell any stats) show he’s an impact defender.  He’s doing things no other center has done defensively since David Robinson.

And that’s in a messed up situtation.

There has been 2 major tyre fires in Phillys history.

In 1996 arsonists burned an underground tyre yard that was near impossible to put out and covered the city in a thin film of tyre smoke residue that has been impossible to remove, even to this day. Tourists now avoid the city at all costs.

In 2013 Sam Hinkie caused a second tyre fire at the Philadelphia 76ers. This left a toxic aroma throughout the city which led fans and players to avoid the team at all costs.

What makes a tyre fire so difficilt to extinguish is that it burns internally.

So while one-time 76ers fans have generally avoided the site of the tyre fire in order to prevent breathing in the toxicity, Nerlens Noel has no choice but to return this offseason to play right in the poisonous inferno.

    No wonder hes pissed…

Philadelphia is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America…

      We are the birthplace ofindependence

You are the type of clown I’d love to fight 1 Vs 1 in a dark alley in NorthPhilly…I’d shut your ass up for good I’m certain…

The hilarious part is My brother in law, who grew up in Australia by way of Germany (his parents are literally Diplomats) has nothing but great things to say whenever he and my wife’s sister come to town, however they have never had a positive thing to say about the land down under…

I’d even venture that my Brother in law would love to shut you up for me had you been more than just a Troll on Nbadraft Net…

As for Noel, screw him, he hasn’t proven to me or anyone else he’s untouchable, if he really wants to play his way outta town he’s better off shutting his mouth and proving his worth…

Deadline deal incoming…We will not miss him…

No tire fire in Philly. Only wishful thinking by Celtic fans that Sixers will give Noel away to Danny Ainge. Aint happenin! Colangelo would rather trade him to Toronto of Houston or out west than give him to the C’s and watch him swat our shots away 12 games a year. Not happenin.  Look for Noel to get half his wish fulfilled. Traded but not to Boston his home town. Sorry C’s fans but you will have to pillage some other franchise.

I think the Sixers have to wait to see if Embiid is a go before moving Noel or Okafor. That means X-Mas maybe. Or later.

As far as trade partners, I’d say Miami (sadly) needs to replace Chris Bosh. Josh Richardson might be a good fit in the long term for Philly. There are a lot more wings out there in the draft than nimble bigs.

With Noel and their other assets they might try Phoenix. Moving Brandon Knight would help Philly (a spot up PG target for Ben Simmons?) and create minutes for Devin Booker.

Tyus Jones from Minnesota would be a nice target as well but I don’t see the T-Wolves needing another big.

Noel is at best a Tyson chandler clone and that is the best case scenario I can think of for him unfortunately… Just like tyson who bounced around a little until he got to Dallas and got his Ring(maybe also with CP3 at the hornets)  Tyson was kind of looked at in the same light. A player who can get some blocks and lobs that is about it..

So in saying that I think a one of the following teams could use him and give him a fresh start:

Boston. They could use a rim protector to go with Al horford. Who they would trade him for I don’t know  I would straight up do it for the Brooklyn Pick in 2017 draft though if Ainge would give it up(which the proviso would be the celtics have to switch picks with Brooklyn so 76ers get a high pick). I don’t know if Ainge would do this though-See Jaylen brown pick this year instead of taking Dunn or trading it away for assets…

Washington: Otto porter for Noel straight trade both are RFA’s and both are kind of getting pushed out of their teams. Otto in favor of oubre and Noel in favor of the surplus bigs so if they did this trade they would both get a need.

Noel to San antonio for Danny Green and maybe a protected pick in next years draft(top 8 protected)… Both teams do this: Noel is to go with Kawhi and LA for the future and replace boban. Green is to give the 76ers some shooting to go with Simmons.

Phoenix: If they believe that he can turn the corner under Tyson Chandler  you could trade you 2017 pick for him or one of your surplus guards for him-Knight or Bledsoe. This would give the 76ers a Pg or a reasonably high pick next season. For the suns this gives them a core which they can build around that all close in age: Booker,Noel,Bender/Chriis and Len(if he can stay healthy) all they would need is there ideal P.G as Tyson probably only has at least two more seasons left in him..

Toronto-There pick in Next years draft for Noel unprotected or at least only top3 protected as the raptors will most likely be in the playoffs…Raptors do this to replace Bismack and 76ers do this to get more assets…

Noel for Green and a pick is kind of interesting.  I think Green bounces back this year and LMA wouldn’t have to guard fives.

Would love Porter on this team. Straight up for Noel would do it as the Wiz are old and unathletic in the front court. Sixers really need a wing and Porter fits the bill.

I think he finds his way to Boston at some point.

Would be a perfect fit with Stevens’ fast-paced defensive-minded system as a rim protector alongside Horford and the Boston perimeter guys.

I see a lot of similar traits between him and a young Tyson Chandler, but as you’ve pointed out, Noels hands aren’t fantastic, and Chandler’s always had above average hands, which is a big factor when your offense is almost entirely dump offs, put backs and alley oops.

I think he needs out of Philly if he wants to develop, go to a team in need of a mobile big because he is one of the best bigs covering the pick and roll with his length and lateral quickness in the league. A team like Boston has the pieces to get him while his market price is at a lull, and he would fit a need for them, though his lack of strength does make post up defense an issue, and Al Horford isn’t a huge big either so that could leave a hole in the Celts d on the low block. But in todays game thats the best place to have a hole with nearly every team focused on pace and space, putting up as many 3’s as possible.

Noel’s trade value is very close to zero honestly.

There are little to no team in the NBA right now where he would start, his role in the 76ers with the logjam is perhaps among the ten best he could have in the league right now.

Look at a player like John Henson with a very similar profile, achieving in fact arguably better numbers and being the third center on a team very likely not to be on the playoff, a team which weakness might even be the Center position.

Skal Labissiere went to the bottom of the first round with a profile that would have been exactly Noel’s if he got injured early in the season.

Larry Sanders found nobody to sign him.(he has his specific issues but still)

The rumor of a Noel trade came because of trade talks with the Celtics who probably considered him because he is a good fit for their bench, but they probably were not givng much for him.

The defensive Center profile is not as popular as you might think. Else, someone like Tyson Chandler would have been dealt this summer by rebuilding Suns for a good young asset.

Noel is also the most durable of the 3 center in Philadelphia, given Embiid history and Okafor injury record so far. Philadelphia wants to have at least one Center throughout the season: they should keep him.

Nerlens is way more popular than Jahlil among Philly fans. He has some swagger, he played arguably better last season. And Jahlil pick was not well received at all from day 1, just because it felt like he was stealing the beloved Embiid’s spot.

Jahlil’s ceiling is certainly higher. Jah has a very good chance to be an all star, and contrary to Nerlens, about half the league would start him at Center right now, even with a disappointing first year. He still achieved an all rookie first team yearand showed he can score. Contrary to what some Philly fans want and say because he is disliked and despised there, he clearly is not a bust so far, and still has his #3 pick value.

He probably is the one Philly want to trade down the line, also because of his off-the-court attitude last year, and because he is a ‘build around me’ player, unlike Noel, and they just want to build around others: Embiid and Simmons.

Jahlil’s stock and offers for him may have been impacted a lot by his knee injury and that’s one reason why they did not pull the trigger yet: teams want to see if he healed right and still compete. Preseason might be enough showcase.

Another reason could be that Colangelo wants to wait until one team goes into ‘rebuild & tank" mode, in which case a package of Jahlil + their best pick of 2017 could get about any player. This scenario is not that unlikely but the better/dream options won’t necessarily happen. Sure if Washington starts the season 6-14 or lower they might trade John Wall, but I feel that if Colangelo counts on that he is daydreaming a little.

Interestingly though, the sixers free agency clearly seems to point that they actually have no ongoing trade offers or trade in mind. They recruited 2 PGs and are trying to get a 3rd one in Norris Cole. They recruited Gerald Henderson, drafted Luwawu at the 2, while keeping around the disappointing former starter Stauskas.

If Philly were really smart, they would look to get Noel extended on a decent contract this summer. If he then had a good start to the season his trade value would increase hugely. I don’t worry too much about him being an RFA next summer, any team that trades for him could match any offers and even if he only signed a qualifying deal then they’d still have him for 2 seasons. How many teams actually trade for a player who is locked down for years!

I think Noel would look very favourably at extending this summer, the cap is up, he has had injury issues, at least get some great long term security if he is offered it.

I read rumours that Toronto would like to get Ibaka, could Noel be a player they target to do a similar job. Toronto are win now so doing a trade with Philly could be good for both sides as there is no clash of interests.

Even with Lauvergne out, there are still plenty of bigs there with Jokic, Nurkic and Arthur, and it’s not like the 4 is free either with Faried and Gallinari often playing 4 since knee injury.

Denver could be a good trade partner if they are interested in Noel. The Nuggets have a number of wings Harris and Barton come to mind. Noel compliments the teams frontcourt well also.
