Most of you are probably watching a NCAA Tournament Game maybe not, but I decided to watch the NIT Tournament #1 Colorado vs #4 California to see how Alec Burks did and Colorado in general.

Alec Burks looks very good right now, he is hitting his jumpshots and threes, driving the ball, and rebounding the ball very good. Burks had a nice alley-oop that shocked everybody it looked like her was going to shoot a floater and he did, but it was a floating alley-oop that was very nice and he he a put back dunk over Cal’s bigs. At the half Colorado is up 37-34.

One thing to note is Alec Burks is showing off his point guard skills bring up the ball, making nice passes, he only has one assist, but don’t let that fool you he is passing the ball well. At 6-6 he has nice size as a point guard and a shooting guard. So far I am very impressed with this kid he is playing great.

Do you think he can play PG at the next level. that would make him a very intriguing draft pick.

OhCanada, I don’t see why not if he wants to be a point guard I believe that he could be a very good point guard in the future with very nice size at 6-6. Whenever Colorado’s starting point guard goes to the bench Burks takes over at that positon until he comes back in and then some after that.

6’6, great scoring abillity, elite athletisism, we know he is a very smart player, all thats left is his playmaking abillity. Even if he doesnt pan out at the PG position teams would still be able to play him at SG. I really like Burks.

This site has Burks NBA Positon as PG/SG and I agree he definitely has the skills to be a point guard. Like you said if he doesn’t work out as a point guard switch him to shooting guard.

@oh Canada, Alec Burks is this year’s version of Brandon Roy. Yes, he can pass well but because of his size and his "somewhat good shooting ability he will the play 2 guard through and through. He plays PG at times for Colorado because they really don’t have a pass first point guard. If Burks were a PG he would be a pretty good one at that, but he will play SG at the NBA level. He already is an intriguing draft prospect because of his good passing ability but we all know he will be a SG and have no doubt about it.

Its unfortunate that Colorado did not make the NCAA tournament but good for him that he isn’t letting that affect his game and still showing us his skills therefore trying to increase his draft stock even though he probably isn’t about his stock right now. But I have a question though about his stock, will it decrease because Colorado didn’t make the tournament (even though they should have) or will it have no effect on his stock at all?

I know the tournament can have a pretty huge effect on a prospect’s stock and I also know that a bad tournament performance can conversely have a bad effect on his stock. Usually I take this to mean that players whose teams make the NIT would vicariously make their stock plummet but I know that this can vary from player to player depending on how they perform in workouts and other draft preparation activities for future prospects. Because I think that Burks is great player with a good NBA future, I don’t think his stock will not plummet that much (right now I think he his a late lottery pick) But I do think that it could drop to a mid first round pick maybe even late first round pick. Do you guys think that this will happen or not?

If Colorado wins the NIT which is very possible I don’t think it would hurt his stock, but it would help him if they do win it.

I actually think that the NIT will be better for Alec Burks even though Colorado didn’t make the NCAA Tournament.

I understand what you mean with the Brandon Roy comparison, saying that he is like a SG with scoring abillity, athletisism and floor general skills a PG usually has. I think Burks will be this years steal, he would it in excellent with Utah who could use a PG and could use a SG. Whichever way he develops doesnt matter because those are two of Utah’s needs. Harris imo is a good PG when he can run, he really struggles in half court sets.

He is the truest shooting guard in the draft.  He is a 2 and only a 2.

I agree with you once again OhCanada he would be a perfect fit for the Jazz. You know he kind of reminds me of a taller, less of a passing Chauncey Billups. Both can play either the point guard or the shooting guard positon, both are pretty good passers, and both are great scorers. The only difference like I said is Burks is taller and maybe a little better of a scorer and  Billups is a better passer. Here is a comparison of both Billups and Burks at Colorado:

    Alec Burks

    Height: 6-6

    Weight: 195 lbs

    20.3 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3 APG, and 1 SPG

    Chauncey Billups

    Height: 6-3

    Weight: 202 lbs

    19.1 PPG, 5 RPG, 4.8 APG, and 2.1 SPG

feel bad for cal, less then 24 hours before the NIT started they lost their best big man(markuri sanders frison) and then early in the second half with the game still in reach tonight they lost their best player in jorge guttierez. I do think colorado was the better team, but would have loved to see cal play with their top guys for the NIT.

How is making the NIT and not the tournament good for Alec Burks? It hurts his draft stock even though he is great prospect this and was a late lottery pick before the tournament and with a tournament invite he could have increased it to maybe a top 5 pick if he did well in the tournament. It’s probably good for him because it allows him not to have his attitude be affected by the potential big stage but he wouldn’t let that happen and you know it. It doesn’t help him prepare for the next level though and thats what I really him to be able to do. Now the only way that he can do this is through the activities that the NBA does to help them evualuate draft prospects and determine which player particular teams want. (like the combine, and workouts) I’m also beginning to think that it wouldn’t be a good idea for him to declare for the draft this year!

I don’t think playing in the NIT will help him all that much. But I certainly don’t think it will hurt him either. But instead of maybe losing in the play in game, he plays against some solid competition in the NIT, while giving scouts more game tape of him in a tournament like setting will be beneficial. Getting to the garden would be good for him…and Higgins who can play too. But at this point, he’s a lottery pick, workouts, etc. will prove how far him moves up or down. Reminds me a bit of Jamal Crawford, with his ability to play the 1 to a certain degree, while still being a good 2 who’s aggressive looking for his shot.

Yeah, I don’t sweat him that much deciding to stay at Colorado, and nor do I think his stock will drop that much. It might drop a little bit since he is playing against lesser competition. (And who said they would have lost the play-in game. Colorado certainly would have been a better candidate than UAB. And Colorado could have beaten Clemson. And then playing against West Virginia would have been interesting. Huggins vs Huggins, Burks vs Jones would have been a good match up) I’m still upset that he didn’t make the tourney, but I don’t think it will plummet his stock that much probably from a late lottery pick to a mid first rounder. No biggy. And Minny could actually use Burks. They wanted desperately to go for Evan Turner last year, well, here is a player just like him. Sure he plays at smaller school than Ohio State and so consequently he plays against lesser competition but he’s not far off from being a lite Evan Turner. He’d be a nice consolation prize for Minny since they lossed out on Turner last year. (This would make Minny deeper as they’d be able to move Johnson to the bench as a backup to Beasley, which would be a better place for him because he is still playing the position that most saw him playing at the next level.)
