The NHL hasn’t been shy about mixing up the all-star format in order to make things interesting. This year there is going to be a school yard style pick em of pool of players. With captains of each team making the picks.

According to NHL.com:

"Fans will pick six players (three forwards, two defensemen and one goalie) for the 2011 All-Star Game in balloting that begins Nov. 15 and runs through Jan. 3, regardless of conference they play in. The remaining 36 All-Stars will be named by NHL Hockey Operations. The players from that group of 42 will vote for team captains.

And that’s when the fun starts, as the captains then select from the full pool of players. Each team will be required to choose three goalies, six defensemen and 12 forwards in any order they choose."

 

I think this is a terrific idea and would make for a really interesting and competitive game. Could you imagine if it was Kobe and LBJ (although I’m not sure if the players would name Lebron a captain) on different sides and they got to hand pick their squads for the game? Sick concept!

And seeing a Hockey game in person is alot of fun… But i hate watching it on TV…

lol, I don’t really follow hockey myself. Hell I didn’t reven really care when the Lightning won the cup a few years ago. I just heard about this on Espn and thought it would be a really neat concept for the NBA to do. Right now the NBA Allstar game isn’t super exciting and I remember when I was a kid how much I loved all-star weekend and the slam dunk competition/three point shootout etc. I think it would just add to the competitiveness of the games and make them a bit more like street ball with chosen captains picking their teams. I think a lot of already existing rivalries would be highlighted.
