Anton123ParticipantI see Sam Dekker has leaped from the mid-late first round to a top-10 pick after a great NCAA tournament, contrary-wise Stanley Johnson has fallen to the eighth pick because of a poor one.
Isn’t this basically the silliest thing to do: to disregard you analysis of a player over 35+ games in favour of 4-5 tourney games. A player gets hot in the tourney and his stock skyrockets and then he gets picked too high: this happened with Trey Burke, Kemba Walker, maybe Shabazz Napier last year.
I understand that the NCAA tourney shows how "clutch" player is and how he handles pressure, but a poor couple of games can just be a poor couple of games, it can happen to any, even the greatest players. And sometimes poor players have terrific games, remember Spike Albrecht a few years back?
I still believe Dekker would be best picked round 15-25, despite all those step back threes I saw him make.
How much do you guys think we should really look at a player based on his tournament performance?

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantDekker’s outside shooting is still inconsistent and his ball-handling needs work. He had a great tournament but for 3 years prior he was always kind of an underachiever imo. He does have prototypical size and athleticism to play the 3 at the next level and will probably test really well at the combine. Im not sure he should be a lottery pick but it wouldn’t necessarily surprise me if a team drafted him there.

KingslayerParticipantI agree for the most part. Teams must consider the whole picture and not just 5 games at the end of the season. However a 5 game run in the tourney isn’t an insignificant sample. The NCAA season is short, so a long tourney run can make up 15% of a prospect’s season long game-tape. If Stanley Johnson was measured on his tournament games alone, he would struggle to receive even first round consideration. That’s not what prognosticators are doing by dropping him 3-5 spots in a mock draft. No reasonable scout would ignore how great he’s been all season, and the NBA potential he has shown thus far.

Lotto StudParticipantJordan Crawford was another huge one from a stellar tournament run. Also, the "Lost Footage" from the ‘LeBron-jam’ helped his cause even more to re-direct a path for the tail-end of Round 1.
Not to take anything away from the initial point of view on guys rising and falling. Your observation is pretty much concrete to an overall perspective of everyone striking the iron while it’s hot for trending moments. A lot of this has to do with everyone as a whole, wanting/needing to see the under-the-radar guys we aren’t familiar with on a regular basis.

juves4783Participanthere’s my take on dekker. he came into the year pretty hot after his outstanding performance at lebron james’ skill camp last summer. at that point, he started the year mocked at 20 in chad fords’ first mock draft. throughout the year, he’s dropped to the 25-30 range based on underperforming through most the season. i think at the end of the day, dekker is still going to be in the 17-21 range. people will forget about the tourney once the combine starts. let’s not forget that last year, napier was up in the lotto and ended at 24.
johnson is sort of in the same boat. started the year at 5 and drifted all the way down to 9. i think the rise of d’angelo russell and kristaps porzingis moves him down a little bit but at the end of the day, he’s still going to be in that 5-8 range. i think once the combine starts, he’s going to drop 10 lbs and outwork everyone there.

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf you need a small forward, and are picking at 10 or somewhere why not? Anywhere from 10 to 20 should be his range. He would be a steal past 25.
He is a third tier guy. Or, late second tier.
Top tier: Okafor, Towns, Russell, Mudiay.
second tier: I am guessing Winslow and Porzingas. Possibly Kaminksy, WCS, and Hezonja.
third tier: Dekker (if not 2nd tier), Lyles, Montrezl Harrell…
If Dekker has great draft workouts I think he can be picked just outside the top 5. I think he would be a good starting small forward for the Celtics. Or, a great sixth man for the Hawks with the Nets pick.

RUN TMCParticipantWho do you hate more? UCONN or UM? Look at the 3 guys you named off and tell me how they didnt make names for themselves throughout the year? They definatly were not march stock improvers(maybe shabazz) but trey was AP player of the year and numerous other awards. Kemba was a beast in college and was only over looked because of size, but still lotto. Spike will never play in the NBA or win a championship so dropping him in there just shows you are hating
