I dont mind the contract, seems reasonable for a rim protecting & 3pt shooting center. It also means if Indiana were to decide to go with Sabonis that it makes Turner more tradeable given the long-term commitment.
Along with that it should leave enough cap to bring Sabonis back if he remains happy with coming off the bench.

hmmm not sure i like it.  Turner is not that durable.  I would of felt more comfortable with 12 to 15 mill rather than $20mill

Were he a 26-27yr old signing his 2nd free agent deal the numbers might reflect a contract of that value.

The thing is he is 22yr old signing his 1st "free agent" deal & that word "potential" is still tied very tightly to him. It’s on McMillan & the coaching staff to give him opportunity on offense, while his rebounding is key for him.

It is not even that he is not all that durable as much as reliable. I can understand how a jump shooting big man’s offense can come and go, but his rebounding and defense comes and goes. With Sabonis, and to a lesser extent O’Quinn, the Pacers can probably still do reasonably well when he goes M.I.A., but that is a lot of money and years for a guy who you can expect to go missing from time to time.

Well looks like the Pacers know something we dont. They must believe he is about to have a breakout season because he has done nothing on the court to earn that kind of extension. He did have a great offseason and also worked with Team USA.

Do I believe he could be worth that contract by the end of the year, defenitely but last year he left you wanting more. One of the worst rebounding Centers in the league. I feel like with Sabonis on deck you could take the gamble and see what he does this year, if he overperformed the contract so be it you pay a bit more but at 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks production I feel like 20-mil can get you alot more.

Lets see how hard he works to improve now that hes gauranteed $80 Mil. I literally laugh thinking about what I would do.

Of course some people will look at the numbers and say the production doesn’t match the contract, but context is important here. Turner is just 22 years old with immense potential. You could argue that he is the perfect prototype for a modern day center with his ability to protect the rim and stretch the floor. Indiana is not a free agent destination, so when they get a player with turners potential, they can’t afford to risk losing him. Considering that this is similar to the amounts that Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon got this summer, it’s probably a fair deal, and could actually end up looking like a bargain in a few years if turner makes the leap many are expecting him to.

$72 million guaranteed with $2 million a year in unlikely bonuses that can bring it up to $80 Mil total.

Derrick Favors got $18 million a year this summer. He’s still only 22 and projects to be a defensive anchor with good touch and expanding range on his jumpshot. I can very well see him growing into a player that’s worthy of that price tag over the life of the contract. He’s a MIP candidate in my book this year, if he improves his consistency.

I feel like "Myles Turner MIP candidate" is brought up every year but he consistently underwhelms. He has to improve his rebounding first and foremost. Lets see how he will do this year but I still think he gets 17 and 8 at most.

That contract is totally fine if really for 72 plus incentives up to 80 mio. Jabari just got 20 million and has a lot worse injury history. Adams and Gobert for example both got 100 mio for 4 years and while I really love Adams, he is not worth that. Gobert is the best defender out of the two but kind of limited offensively. Turner could very well be a 18-20 ppg player if he stays healthy this season. Adams on the other hand is always misused to me offensively. He gets so few touches outside the paint and is a way better passer than he can show with Westbrook and PG running the show. I really hope they use him better this year with Melo gone but this is another story and has nothing to do with Turner who is growing into a complete player to me. Strong defense and a really nice arsenal of moves offensively. Hope he stays healthy.

I‘ve seen some workout videos of Turner and he has improved his handles by a lot and is way more smooth and explosive now, shoots from deep etc. Only problem I see is the Sabonis situation and McMillan refuses to play both together which I understand with the whole small ball thing but if both can hit the outside shot the length and rebounding advantage is something teams should try to take advantage of but they at least should give it a try at some point since both are too talented to not see if they can coexist.

Could someone please explain to me how the bonus/incentive thing works cap wise btw? I don’t really understand what number is counted cap wise and what happens if he gets the 2 mio one year but not the other and so on. A little bit confusing since salaries are normally fully guaranteed and this is kind of a strange thing to me.

This reminds me a lot of the Oladipo deal when he re-upped with us in OKC a lot of people hated it I was a fan of it as I knew he could be good once he gets comfortable with the team and he took less than the max which could have helped the team out(more cap =deeper team with right moves)…

This is the same sort of deal really if the cap goes up the deal looks ok if the cap doesn’t go up much if at all the deal may look a little meh especially if he doesn’t progress as expected-See Wiggins as example…

His skill set is nice,he is still a little raw but overall he has the intangibles to do alot so if healthy he should eventually turn into a very well rounded centre meaning he can stay on the court a lot more vs his limited rivals..

Here is a list of the guys who are currnetly scheduled to make between $18 – $20 million next year (per basketball-reference.com):

    Aaron Gordon

    Zach LaVine

    Joakim Noah

    Kent Bazemore

    Tyler Johnson

    Goran Dragic

    Jeff Teague

    Evan Turner

    Draymond Green

    Tristan Thompson

    Allen Crabbe

    Tim Hardaway, Jr.

    Reggie Jackson

    George Hill

Some All-Stars, a couple more with potential to be All-Stars, and some head scratchers. It looks to me like this is Myles’ tier. Right where he should be.

Fair deal for both sides. I think it makes sense to tie him up now as if he has a breakout season his value could go up by about $5 million a year.

This was one of those rare occasions where I looked at the dollar amount on a non-max, still high value contract and sort of shrugged and went "Eh, seems about right."  Reminds me of exactly how I reacted to Kemba’s 4/48 deal back in 2014.  Before he was an All Star and before $12 million a year in the NBA was relative peanuts. Ah, the good old days.

Yeah Im not really saying its a bad contract or hes a bad player. Its just the timing is off. Your exntending his contract before an 82+ game season under the pretense that he will improve and stay healthy. I would wait, make him work even harder during his contract year, and then make an offer or match any offer given to him based on what takes place throughout the season. Happy for Myles though.

If he had a reasonable year this season and had played over 70 games what would have been the best offer sheet he could have signed as an RFA which Pacers could have to match. How would that compare to the contract he has signed.

I always think it is strange that rookies have to be tied up by a certain date before they go into the last year of their contract yet other players can mutually agree an extension before they hit FA. Maybe a team should be given more time to extend rookies but then rookies become FA’s when their 4th year expires.
