With the All Star Game over, the final five for the MVP award are Giannis aka Greek Freak, Kevin Durant, Harden, Jokic, and Paul George with Embiid and Russ narrowly missing out.

In other words, your All NBA first team are Giannis, KD, Harden, Jokic, and Paul George.

For being on the winning team in the All Star Game, James Harden gets 20 bonus points.  For being the MVP of the game, Kevin Durant gets 20 points PLUS another 50 points.  This could be HUGE coming down the stretch.

For the rookies, the top 5 came down to winning (or, well, losing LESS).  Luka, Shai, Trae Young, Jaren Jackson, Jr., and Marvin Bagley III are your FINAL FIVE with DeAndre Ayton missing the cut.  Ayton was second to Luka (and just ahead of Trae) in the raw data points, but his team’s abysmal winning percentage ruined his ROY chances.

Neither of those five won the Rising Stars Challenge MVP award, but Trae, Jaren, and Bagley EACH get 20 bonus points for being on the winning team.  This could come back to haunt Luka Doncic.  Not good for Shai either with him actually finishing second to Luka in the ROY tally so far due primarily to his team’s 54.2% winning percentage.

So, after NEXT Sunday’s games one MVP candidate and one ROY candidate will be eliminated.  Same for the next few weeks until we get down to two MVP finalists and two ROY finalists.  Then, it is one-on-one until the end of the regular season.

I might also do this for PLAYOFF MVP.

Hmm, if I do this I might give 20 bonus points to whoever is on the championship team.  Plus an ADDITIONAL 50 points for the Finals MVP.

Let’s see what happens during the NBA’s stretch run!

ayton is averaging a double-double.  there’s no way he is not top 5.

Correct, record should not impact a rookie’s chance to win ROY.  These players are all going to bad teams at the top of the lottery.

Yeah I’m pretty sure Michael Carter-Williams won ROY after leading the 76ers to like 9 whole wins

Shai was a surprise to me although his team is doing well.  Ayton is playing for a REALLY bad team, but how much is on HIM?

I think the race now is between Luka and Trae but you could also see Bagley and Jaren as fringe ROY contenders or at least in contention for All Rookie 1st team.

The MVP five looks to hold up well: Greek Freak, Harden are obviously in along with Paul George and Jokic.  Durant is a toss-up but Embiid is gonna be out for a few games anyway — would have been an auto cut next week.

For the playoffs, I might do a Playoff Final Five AFTER the first round of the playoffs (of players on teams advancing to the second round), then eliminate one player after the second round, and another after the conference finals.  So, top 3 go into the NBA Finals to determine the winner.  If NO player in the top 3 gets to the Finals, then that would be strange, but whatever.

     MVP race

    1. Paul George

    2. Giannis

    3. Harden

    4. Jokic

    5. Lebron

I will if Lebron leads the lakers to a streak and they end up with something other than the 7-8th seed I would have a hard time not giving the mvp to Lebron.

    ROY race

    1. Luka

    2. Luka

    3. Luka

    4. Luka

    5. Luka

MVP..Greek Freek, PG, Harden, Jokic, Curry

Harden putting up numbers but he plays no D and he’s starting to just jack up bad shots to make sure he gets 30.

    ROY..Luka, Ayton, Trae, Jared, Bagley..

read a couple of post, record shouldn’t matter when it comes to ROY..it’s rookies going to very very  very bad teams. And most of these teams are tanking to rebuild, not the rookie fault.

Point taken HobbyOG, BUT yesterday I checked the Yahoo fantasy basketball rankings and Shai was ranked HIGHER than Ayton in the past 30 days.  Ayton is still putting up points and rebounds BUT he has been injured a bit more and his blocked shots numbers aren’t that great (and the Suns still stink).

I think the ROY race is between Luka and Trae with Luka currently ahead at the moment.  Although I feel like Bagley is SURGING.

Jaren Jackson Jr. can make a legit run at the ROY top 5 — OR be eliminated by next weekend.
