Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook are the first 2 that come to mind. Many say Rose for MVP I just feel he has a better shot at the MIP than MVP at this point. Westbrook though has looked like he took the biggest strides this off season and many say if Miami could go back they’d choose Brook Lopez with that number 2 pick when I think they would Westbrook.

Anyway who are some of your favorites to win the award.

Rose-Westbrook-Love-Beasley are obivous choices who are the dark horses.

I say Hibbert, Afflalo and Eric Gordon are major candidates

Many have rose for MVP? I’ve looked around and i dont see anywhere where he is a favorite, other then Bulls fans.

AS far as most improved i’d have to go with Paul milsap right now

Rose and Westbrook are top 3 MVP candidates w/ D12 to this point. They are not MIP candidates because they have always been very good they are just pushing it to the next level now.

Kobe Bryant? Rajon Rondo? Both are doing better then Rose and Westbrook right now IMO.

I’d go with Roy Hibbert as of right now.

He was solid last year, but I don’t think anybody predicted he’d be putting up these kind of numbers this season. And his numbers are leading to wins.

Kobe is shooting 43% and might not even have been his team’s best player this season.

Rondo has been banged up. And doesnt carry his team like Westbrook and Rose do. They are the go to guys every night, Rondo is a facilitator.

    PS

Hibbert is the answer. He has been the MIP from last season to this.

Definitely Hibbert, you’ve got give the 7-2 guy credit for really putting in the work exercising his potential like so many other centers, and the Pacers’ being a playoff team says something.

I like what he’s doing in Utah this season since he FINALLY has a chance to get starter minutes. But I mean, it is a shocker that Millsap is putting up 18 and 8? He was doing that when Boozer was injured and Utah knew what they had when the matched Millsaps contract.

I’d rather give it the MIP award to someone who is really catching some attention. Westbrook has jumped up 8 points from last year and has increased almost every statistical category and plus, I could never have imagined him being lights out when Durant doesn’t play. I think its fair (even though he’s getting MVP numbers and wont win MVP) that the least he can get if he keeps up this pace of 24, 5, 8.5 per for the rest of the season in the Most Improved Player.

Side note, I did wanna say Hibbert too but Jim O’Brien teams tend to be 3 point shooting teams. They asked him this season to start working the ball down low and let Hibbert do something with his 7’2" frame and excellent passing ability. He’s improved defensively and in other categories as well but Im hesitant to say him because I have a feeling his numbers may dip a little. I would work the ball to make sure Hibbert gets at least 15 shots a game and I could see him being 20,10, 3 blocks but thats all on Jim O’Brien and how he decides to run his offense this year.

That’s Austin Rivers, who is ranked #1 in the class of 2011 by ESPN. Funny how someone ranked that high — and who’s the son of an NBA coach — could have a shot so funny-looking….

Well regardless of weather or not it is literally "ugly," he definitely doesn’t have anything close to textbook form. He is a really good shooter though, with deep range and a pretty quick release.

    Top 9 Most Improved Candidates

1.Kevin Love…Might’ve lead the league in rebounding last season,if he had gotten the minutes…

2.Micheal Beasley…Beasley could’ve been a 20 point scorer in Miami..But he had too many personal problems and mostly was immature..And the coach confused him and twisted his game by forcing him to focus more on defense…With the T-Wolves he seems to have gotten his head on straight and focused on playing ball…

3.Roy Hibbert..During the draft,i said that Hibbert should’ve been a top 10 pick..But some said he was too slow and not athletic enuff and would only be a backup..Hibbery has a decent post game and have increaded his rebounding numbers…The Pacers coach made a wise decision to run plays thru Hibbert…He seems to be getting better every game…

4.JJ Hickson..Hickson was the front runner for this award the first 10 games, but since then he has been inconsistent and in coach Byron Scott’s doghouse…

5.DJ Augustine…Some dissed DJ saying he couldnt replace Felton..He has shown the abilty to knock down shots and get the ball to teammates..He might not be the long term solution for the Bobcats at the point and will never be among the top 10 point guards in the nba,but he has shown he can be a starter in this league…

6.Rudy Gay..I know this guy is among the most exciting players in the nba..And a top 25 player..But playing on Team USA has done wonders for his game..made him more of a leader, improved his defense a little. He doesnt trail his man as much as he use to..He put the clamps on Melo sunday night forcing him to miss 11 shots in a row…Too bad the other Grizzlies failed to play any defense…

    7.Aaron Alfalo

8.Andrae Blathe..Has the talent to be 1 of the top 5 power forwards in the game..But he needs to get his mind right..

9.Wes Matthews..With Utah last season he was known for being a good defender..With Portland he has shown he can score and create for himself…

His form is definitely weird, there is no disputing that. But he is consistent and knocks his shots down, so that’s really what matters. But still, I don’t see how you can say his form isn’t strange.

My vote is Raymond Felton. I knew he was gonna have a big year, but I didn’t he’d be this good. I have him on my fantasy team but I had to do a trade in order to get him. I traded Devin Harris, but I seriously thought about it, and I thought I’d end up regretting it, but now I am so glad I made the trade.

Eric Gordon also comes to mind because he has showed us something new to his game. A passing ability. He now averages about 4.5 apg. I would not say it is out of the question if he could pass like Stephen Curry and 5-6 per game. At the beginning of this season, I said no way, but now I think it is certainly possible.

I kinda look at the award differently. You have to look to see if the players skill set and game have gotten better from last year, and not just numbers. Numbers say they have been doing better, but that could also be due to a new team (Beasley and Felton) or more minutes (Love and Hickson). You don’t know if those guys have improved are have just taken on a bigger role. That’s why I like Hibbert or Gay who have both just improved their games and skillset from last year.

I’m not a Darko enthusiast, but I think this is the only award that Darko should be considered.  Not even close to an all-star like some are suggesting, but if he ends the year at 11 ppg and 7 rpg that is a +9 ppg and +5 rpg from last season, plus he is currently leading the NBA in blocked shots.

A lot of other guys can make strong cases too, and for better teams so I don’t think he’s a favorite, but I think he at least deserves a mention on this thread.

@delfam, Richard Jefferson is having a better season than last when he was pretty awful, but he is still averaging 8 less points per game than his career high and over 2 less than his career average…

There’s a lot of players very willing of having a shot at MIP this year, which is really fun to see. At this point I’ve been most impressed by Hibbert though. Rose already put up good numbers before, sure he’s better this year but generally MIP is someone who kind of came out of nowhere…kind of same with Westbrook. Millsap is another good choice, as is Beasely. But I still think I give the nod to Hibbert as things stand right now.
