ESPN.com just ran a good article on Mark Few. Of course, Coach K, and Calipari and Roy Williams take the spotlight every year because they have national titles and are hall of famers. (Cal should be inducted soon). But I believe Few is one of the better coaches in the country. Of course he coaches in the weak West Coast Conference and wouldn’t be 14-0 in conference play if he was in the ACC or the Big Ten, but I believe Coach Few is in a perfect situation in Spokane. His team this year might be the best he’s ever had, save the one he had with Adam Morrison. They are a trendy pick to make it to their first final four in program history. He’ll never get the one and dones and top 10 recruits, but he’s in a great situation at Gonzaga and I don’t think he’ll ever leave.

I also think few is in a good spot at Gonzaga. He’s really created a great situation out west. However, I think if the big boys came calling he’d at least give it a second thought. Imagine a situation where Coach K is going to retire. The AD picks up the phone and calls Few. Wouldn’t he listen? Or Roy at UNC is retiring? Wouldn’t he listen? What if Indiana gets tired of not competing for Championships? Might he listen? I’m not sure Few is cut out for this but… Coach Cal is ready to move on to the NBA (Full disclosure I’m a UK fan). He’d a least listen, right? To say he’d never leave is a bit of a stretch. To say he’d never get “one and dones” is short sighted. By that I mean, imagine that the Zag’s make it to the Final four, wouldn’t some of this West Coast kids with super talent at least look at Gonzaga?

That’s just a few of the “big-boys” in the sport. He is quietly turning Gonzaga into a big boy. I hope he stays and does something similar to what Coach K did at Duke. It’d be fun to watch, but if Cal does leave, I wouldn’t be mad if he came our way. Just saying.

Around 5 years ago he was close to leaving for Indiana but I don’t think he is going anywhere. Gonzaga has amazing faculties and it will only get easier to recruit.

But I give Few (and Shaka Smart) credit for turning away the "big boys" when they came calling. He stayed loyal to his small school and continued to recruit at a pretty high level.

I always liked when coaches stayed where they were loved instead of moving up and possibly being on the hot seat in a few years. Loyalty botrh ways.

Few is an excellent coach and in as good a spot as it gets for college basketball. Gonzaga is one of the best programs in the country and he does it without getting a lot of top rated recruits. Going forward, I bet they will consistently be active in the grad transfer market because late career guys will want to go play there for a year. He’s done a great job establishing a pipeline to other countries including Canada.

Gonzaga is always going to be at the top of their conference and he’ll never really be under any pressure because they will always rack up wins, and every 3 or 4 years they are capable of making a deep run in the tourney.
