As a Lakers fan, I’ve spent some time trying to understand all the moves the Lakers have made thus far and try not to overreact initially.  It’s evident that the Lakers are now entering a patient rebuild mode, instead of trying to become a contender too fast as I think the New York Knicks are doing. The Lakers are no longer a journey destination, so they may have to "overpay" in order to acquire some respectable talent (I place caution on using the term "overpay" since everyone is getting paid big money this offseason). Both Deng and Mozgov are guys that can be counted on to come to work, play hard, and not complain about touches or their role.  I think they’re perfect fits for this patient rebuild and the right move, because the Lakers have no chance of getting the likes of Whiteside, Durant, Derozan, or any other major players that are free agents this year or next year.  The Los Angeles Lakers as a destination team is now a myth, so they need to build from within with Russell, Ingram, Clarkson, and Randle as their core.  This may not be the most glamorous approach, but it’s what’s best for the Lakers who may not even have control of their draft picks the next two years. Over the next 3-4 years, the young core will hopefully grow and mature and by the time Mozgov and Deng are on expiring contracts, the Lakers will, hopefully, be a respectable and, possibly even, targeted destination for players. With globalization and the rise of social media, the terms "big market" and "small market" are quickly losing their meaning.  Stars can and will appear anywhere, so teams like the Lakers and Knicks can no longer rely on their names to appeal to free agents.  It’s all about the product they put on the floor.  The Lakers currently have a poor product, but are slowly…slowly………slowly heading in the right direction.  Be patient Lakers fans…. Mamba out

I’ve been one of the biggest defenders of Jim Buss mostly due to him getting unfairly criticized by the media.

I would now love to admit my mistake.  What the &$#%#&@! is going on??  These moves are terrible.  Taking themselves our of the running for two max players next season already.

Jared Dudley gets 30 mil for 3.  Deng gets a billion for 4???

With a guy like Moe Harkless around? Deng is obviously a 4 at this point in his career .

Seems like Jim Buss is sending a message or trying to mess whoever released that article the other days plans up.

A portion of my argument is saying that the Lakers are only in the running for max level player’s in theory.  Whiteside, Durant, and Derozan did not even consider having a meeting with the Lakers. What makes you think that will change next year? The Lakers are going to be a 30 win team next season. Will max level players want to play for that? You’ve said yourself that Jim Buss is incompetent. Will max level players want to play for him? The answer is NO. The Lakers have zero appeal to free agents right now, so they have to wave the white flag and trust in the process of a rebuild.  The money and years thrown at Mozgov and Deng is insignificant, because no stars are coming via free agency anytime time soon.  The sooner us Lakers fan realize that, the sooner we will be able to realize that we’ve been spoiled for through the eras of Magic, Shaq, and Kobe. Deng and Mosgov are on this team to show the young guys how to be a professional. A guy like Harkless, who’s is younger and has more promise, wouldn’t provide that, because he’s still looking for a niche in the league himself.  Building a contender is supposed to take time and patience. We as Lakers fans need to be patient and trust the process.

This move actually shows how much they think of their young core: a lot. They won’t sign big free agents for a while. Russell, Clarkson, Ingram, and Randle will be THE max-type guys. This won’t help get or keep another lottery pick, but it adds a professional and hard-working atmosphere. And vets like Nick Young weren’t helping. He and Russell used to try to catch each other going to the bathroom on camera. For real, Nick? You’re 30.

They are overpaying and I was hoping they’d add hard working, lower-level, cost-effective, don’t-add-too-much-to the-win-column guys, but their idea is smarter. These guys will do more than teach culture, they can teach basketball skills. I think one more add would be nice: a hard working veteran backup PG. Someone to teach Russell skills.

I like the effort-level on the team:

      PG: Russell/Free Agent/Huertas SG: Clarkson/L.Williams SF: Deng/Ingram (also at SG) PF: Randle/Nance C: Mozgav/Bass/Black

Coming into offseason I said 3 things they need to do is add a defensive minded center(I suggested biyombo), add a veteran wing to give us a guy who can play some perimeter defense and be a locker room presence( I suggested Dudley or Marvin Williams) and resign clarkson and bass.

I don’t know if we did the right thing with mozgov, he’s more offense then defense. And the money looks bad. But maybe he just wasn’t utilized right in clevland and Luke Walton thinks he can get more out of him.

Deng is an even better sf then I was expecting, but he is also gonna cost more then I was expecting.

Clarkson on a better deal then I had hoped, not only did he get about 9 mil less then the max but now they don’t have to backload the contract if they don’t want to. I would rather front load any deals since we aren’t contenders now and save cap space for the future when all the young guys start coming off their rookie deals.

I still hope we can retain bass but if not, zubac and Tariq black can give us some muscle down low off the bench.

I’m just excited to see the young guys like Randle, Russell and Ingram grow and see what Luke Walton has in mind offensively.

I agree we are doing things right by rebuilding, but I just got to get used to these dollar amounts.

With the new cap they have to spend it on someone. I was hoping they would get Bazemore. I honestly don’t think Mozgov. Is that bad. Yes the money is outrageous but he’s a solid center that will show up and work every day. Show these young guys how to be a pro.

I think its important that young players have some teammates that understand offensive and defensive systems and that players are held accountable for bad shots and missed assignments, so adding some proven guys is a necessity.

I do wonder if they might have been able to wait a bit and use their cap space to acquire contracts other teams want to move. If Golden State wanted to move Bogut or New Orleans wanted to move Asik the Lakers could have acquired players similar to Mozgov on shorter years/money and probably  picked up an asset for the service.

Definitely seems like they are ok putting their 1st round pick in jeopardy.

Smartest thing for Lakers to do would be to lose like crazy and retain their top 3 pick. Add Josh jackson or Harry Giles to their already young core. Not winning a championship next year, add another star prospect to their young core in 3-4 years they would be a major problems

They Prbly will lose a lot of games and remain in the bottom 3. What teams in the West get less wins than the Lakers next year? Prbly the 76ers and Nets have less wins. I can’t think of any other team.

I thought the Lakers did great in the draft getting ingram and zubic in the 2nd round ( most had him pegged as a first round talent). They also hired the coach they wanted in walton who has to be an improvement over Scott (he can’t possibly be worse) and resigned Clarkson at a reasonable price. They didn’t do anything stupid like blow up their core for a guy like cousins, Butler or love, who really wouldn’t put them any closer to contention than they are right now.

As for the moves they’ve made so far in free agency, mosgov is no doubt a reach at the   they were willing to pay. However, they needed a center and he was probably the best they were going to do. It was going to be extremely hard to convince any of the bigger names on the market to come there. As for Deng, this just seems like a case of spending money for the sake of spending. Not that Deng isn’t still a decent player that will help them over the next few years, but his best days are clearly behind him. They needed a veteran presence in the locker room, but they could have found that much cheaper without committing so much cap space to a guy that it’s hard to see playing up to the value of that contract over the next 4 years. Getting Deng at 27 at that price would have seemed like a bargain. Getting him at 31 for that price reeks of desperation. Both of those deals definitely seem like they could have the potential to come back to haunt them long-term.
