I am curious about a couple things regarding Derrick Williams and Kyrie Irving for the number 1 spot and I want to get reasoning of backers of Derrick Williams for the number one spot.

I want to know why is everyone putting so much stock in Kyrie Irving not doing the athletic combine?  Obviously the kid could not work out running wise (which is the quickest way to shed body fat) due to his toe for a good while at Duke.  His body fat was close to 11%, and as an athlete, that is no where near your peak of physicality and would hinder your combine testing, which in turn would only hurt Kyrie.  I think he made the right decision not to do the combine as he was not in top shape and people look too much into the athletic testing.

For Derrick Williams, I don’t see why a lot of people are calling him a "sure" thing.  He lacks a defined position in the NBA with people pegging him as playing the 3.  I think he could be a better than average 4, but not an allstar caliber 4.  If Cleveland is going to select him to play the 3 I think they are in for a rude awakening.  He lacks the lateral quickness and ball handling to be a better than average 3 in the league IMO.

I would just like to hear people’s perspective on why they think Derrick should be number 1, because I am just having a very hard time buying it.

williams really raised his stock when he looked like a pro already playing in the NCAA tourney. this happens all the time. a great tourney can move you up 10 spots in the draft. and i disagree, i feel he will fit right in as a SF. he looks like an iguodala twin that can shoot.

i think he goes first because knight and kemba can be had with the 4th pick, and this almost certainly leads to the wolves trading the 2nd pick. could they really draft kyrie? maybe kahn is just enough of a mad scientist to do it.

so now who needs a franchise point? one will be bought from the wolves this year.

same point for kyrie, it was easy to see why he is rated the top pg after missing most of the season and playing very well in the NCAA’s. for coach k to put him in the tourney games without playing any meaningful minutes prior says loads about this guy’s skill level.

williams to the cavs at 1!

I think the Williams at #1 is just a result of the combine right now.  I think when individual teams work out Irving and see up close his abilities that he decided not to showcase in the combine then his stock will raise again.  I still think Irving will end up going #1.  There is no guarantee Knight will be available at #4, from what I’ve heard Utah is looking at him at #3 if they don’t trade the pick. I think when you have the opportunity to get a potential franchise point you use it.

    Marvin Williams vs Chris Paul

I don’t think the Cavs want to make that same mistake Atlanta did, esp. with the #1 pick.

In fact Atl passed on Deron Williams and Raymond Felton too.

How would the Hawks look with either Deron Williams or Chris Paul as their starting point guard?

What’s interesting about that Paul vs Marvin Williams comparison is that Cleveland GM Chris Grant was with ATL when they took Williams (Ast GM). He asked me what I thought they should do before the draft and I said I thought they should take Deron Williams.

The difference here is that the experience is on the other side with Marvin being a bench player for one year and Paul having 2 full years of experience. Irving played 1/3 of a college season (and plays the most difficult position to play at the NBA level) while Derrick Williams is the one who played 2 years at a dominant level. I also don’t think Irving is in Paul’s league in terms of speed/athleticism. Derrick Williams is considered a better character guy (than Marvin) plus has the size for either forward position.

I will guarintee that Irving is the real deal and well worth the #1 pick…he will be a perennial all star point guard and I’ll be thrilled if he drops to the Wolves, and we can forget about Rubio…If he falls to the Wolves I will be very nervous of Kahn making the right decision, I’ll be crossing my fingers.
