Kings passed on Doncic

When they picked at #2, I knew they would mess it up. Bagley has looked good but nothing compared to Doncic.. Scoring 20 ppg with high efficiency and a great playmaker.. With the emergeance of Fox and Hield, this would have been a nasty trio.. Doncic is the best prospect of the 2 long term and short term also IMO. The kings have started good this season but I doubt they'll sustain this in the tough western conference.

I admit it. I was totally wrong about Doncic.. I was expecting around 14 or 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists with bad percentages, but his jump shot has looked really good. Last 5 games hes shooting 54% field goal and 48% from three. Dude is gonna be a superstar. Mea Culpa.

Hate to gloat, but I was

Hate to gloat, but I was right about Doncic. MVP in Europe at 19?! That's unheard of. Ridiculous IQ and skills, solid athleticism. I just didn't understand what others weren't seeing in this kid.

Compare the minutes that

Compare the minutes that Doncic plays compared to the minutes that Bagley plays. Luka better be putting up more points if he plays over 30 minutes every game and Bagley normally plays less than 20. As a die hard Kings fan since 2001, I’ll admit that my team has made some of the worst or if not, THE WORST drafting choices of any team in the past ten years. We are the same franchise that took Jimmer Fredette over Kawhi Leonard and Thomas Robinson over Damian Lillard I’m back to back years. The sad part is that both Kawhi and Damian worked out for the Kings prior to being drafted. Back to your topic, as I am defending Marvin Bagley on this post, I’ll admit myself that I wish we took Doncic instead as well. But Bagley has been beyond impressive in my eyes as a fan who watches every second of every game and has been averaging over double digits regardless of playing under 20 minutes more than half of the games so far. Even though I agree with you on the fact that Doncic would have been a better pick, they did not “mess it up” like you said. Marvin Bagley will be our best PF we’ve had since Chris Webber and will be just fine even if he wasn’t the best player available at our pick. As I’ve watched almost every game since 2010, the only Kings rookies since then who have impressed me even more than Bagley has so far were Tyreke Evans (Averaged 20-5-5) as a rookie and won ROY in the same class as Stephen Curry and James Harden, Bogdan Bogdanovic (He was 25 as a rookie compared to Bagley who will be 19 for almost his entire rookie season) and De’Aaron Fox just by a little bit. Marvin Bagley will not be a bust like all of you keep on saying smh.

Only been like 10 games calm

Only been like 10 games calm down fella...Luka has a lot of Stan's aka groupies on this board..One day a post about Atlanta, then the Kings, etc. Geesh..we determining the future off of 10 games?? Who knows how he would fit in with the Kings, he might not of had the same freedom he has with the Mavs, he might mess up the chemistry that Fox, Buddy and WCS is currently playing with...I like the Kings pick of Bagz

Difference

No one can forget that Doncic played in a very competitive environment, while Bagley played HS and one season in college. NCAA can be interesting but mid level is far from best european leagues.I think Doncic is 2 or 3 years ahead of Bagley in the road of development as a player. Obviously Doncic could be anyway better but we have to wait a bit to be sure of that.

Remember

Luka threaten to go back to Europe if he got drafted by certain teams, I believe that was the Kings, and they got offended and passed on him.

Dont get me wrong, I dont

Dont get me wrong, I dont think Bagley is a mistake at all. He's shown potential in every aspect of the game, from shooting, to ball handling, to defense, to passing, to post play. He has the look of a 20 point, 11 reb, 3 asts, 1 stl, 2 blk, 50% 35% 75% all star level big. Its ok to pass on the top player if you think your getting a fantastic player that fits your system. And Bagley is damn good.

Just... Doncic is a lot better than I expected.

Doncic is showing his

Doncic is showing his experience, which is scary at 19! When you play this well at 19 and it's not based on super athleticism or that natural energy you have as a young man then you have a very bright future. His game shouldn't get worse than this until he physically starts dropping off. That may be 33 or 34 for him as he'll have a lot of miles on his tyres (since age 16), but he has the potential to get to Bird level savviness.

Sacto may have had a threat he wouldn't come over, they may have preferred Bagley because they want Fox on the ball. Who knows? I think they missed out though.

I know they've played well together, but I'm already thinking Dallas should move DSJ. Luka has to be at the point. That's a clear advantage they are missing out on, having a guy that size in control. He's basically a younger, less athletic Simmons with a jumpshot and big game experience. That's a freak. Id trade DSJ for a switchy wing type, even maybe package for Jimmy Butler.

i

Yeah the ball flows so much better when he's handling the ball.. The sooner the Mavs realize he should be their PG, the better for them.. I still like Dennis Smith, is 3 pt shot has already improved, so I wouldn't give him up just yet. But gotta admit Doncic at PG is looking scary for the future

@jjj10man No, Luka didn't

@jjj10man No, Luka didn't threat to go back to Europe, it was a false interpretation of a politically correct answer about if he is moving to NBA next season. He made an answer that is good for his RM fans. He was open to go to the Kings and even took a photo with their -Kings- owner's son IIRC. If they have drafted him he would be playing there.

And I think Kings made a mistake and Luka will be better player, never been Bagley biggest fan tbf. but no team makes perfect draft decision. Kings right now have a great prospect in Bagley and very good young team that they should be excited about.
As a Mavs fan I am happy with their decision, but right now all top 5 picks look solid and should make their fans excited

You can't discount the fact

You can't discount the fact that Fox's improvement factored into their decision. Look at how inconsistent DSJ is having to play so much off the ball next to Luka. Doncic has looked great, but for a PG who likes to penetrate and attack the defense off the bounce it's a big adjustment. Sac also couldn't have anticipated Bjelica being THIS good out the gates. Bagley has been very productive with the minutes he's gotten and the team as a whole is clicking. Who is to say things would've worked out exactly the same for Doncic in a different situation?

Atlanta is happy with Young, SAC is happy with Bagley, Dallas is happy with Doncic. Let each team enjoy their guy. It's too early to conclude that anyone "messed it up" when each guy is playing well in their respective situations.

I’m of the opinion that for

I’m of the opinion that for bagley to fully realize his offensive potential he needs to play the 5 position primarily. The ideal situation for him would be to run pick and roll with him and fox on the perimeter and surround them with guys that can space the floor (hield, bogdonovich, bejlicia). That’s what they are currently doing now and have had success to start the season, only with WCS in bagleys place. His speed and athleticsm at the five could make him a matchup nightmare.

The problem with playing bagley at the 5 though is that he doesn’t have the length and hasn’t really shown the instincts to be effective defensively at that position. The kings have a 5 man in WCS who is playing terrific to start the season and projects as a much better defender than bagley. But it’s difficult play them together and run the kind of offense they want to run because neither really spaces the floor. Bagley has shown some ability to hit from outside but he’s going to need to be a lot more of threat to play with WCS, and if you have him spotting up that takes away from his strength which is attacking the basket and pounding the offensive glass.

The kings are going to have a big decision to make with WCS. If they are committed to bagley as a franchise centerpiece, do they try to make it work with a bagley/WCS frontline? Or do they look to move WCS while he still has some trade value and commit to bagley as their full time center going forward.Ideally, the frontcourt partner you would want for bagley would be a guy who can block shots and protect the rim at a high level on defense and stretch the floor on offense while operating primarily on the perimeter. Guys like that don’t grow on trees though.

Bagley's gonna be a good

Bagley's gonna be a good player, I mean he is already. Sometimes I'll be watching the Kings play and I'll see Bagley running the floor leading the break and I'll say "who the heck is that" because its still hard to imagine anyone that big and wide be so fluid.

With that being said it was and will always be a bad pick. Doncic would have been the perfect fit for this team and he is playing great basketball. Its hard for me to imagine how they missed on this one thats why a part of me still believes he refused to join them.

I have too much pride to

I have too much pride to admit I was Dead-a$$ wrong about Doncic...

Gimme til the all-star break and then maybe I'll utter the words.

I think him playing his natural SF position is a huge benefit because his slightly below average quickness/athleticism is masked when being guarded by bigger guys

Doncic is a terrific player but LD & Fox would not fit together

Both need the ball & Kings absolutely Luv Fox & rightly so, he's got super star potential & he's a really bright kid

Remember the Kings brought in a coach & committed to a speed based offense & Fox is absolutely Perfect for that - Kings are already the #3 team in the NBA in possessions per game b/c they play So fast - even on Made baskets Kings in bound the ball & Flox is flying down the court & on the attack before the Defense can even turn around

Kings have athletes all over the court & Bagley is going to be a stud as a stretch 4 or a small ball 5. Hield has looked really good in the back court w/ Fox.

Doncic & Fox are Both going to be terrific players but you can't just go by stats & not provide context. Had Sacramento drafted Doncic they stifle Fox b/c they take the ball out of his hands & they slow down the system they want to play. Dallas got their man Doncic & he's a Great fit in Dallas b/c it's a natural fit w/ Dirk's legacy. And Sacramento also got themselves a fantastic talent in Bagley who will fit nicely into their future plans.

Going to say this...

I called Bagley to the Kings and that Luka would fit best with either Hawks or Mavs lol...

So the reason I say this is the following:

Luka if he had went to the Kings was either a double up of what they currently had(at time of draft): Bogdan,Buddy or Fox or now Belly(PF) which would not have made him as effective he also made very little sense due to having drafted Fox the year before. Especially if he was thinking he was a guard not the point forward the mavs used him as... Bagley was the better choice as he was either going to be an amazing 6th man for them or their starting forward they have been searching for...The other key fact was this :

He really wanted to be there and that really really helps with acclimitisation and comfort levels vs rumors about luka buyout, not wanting to go there etc...Bagley also sort of fits the mould of what Jager likes in his players.

Luka was a better choice for the Hawks or Mavs as they need a guard(that was what I thought he was meant to play) and need the best available talent...

I was kind of surprised by the Trae for Donic trade more so than the Bagley over Donic pick as I didn't think the Hawks would do this trade as the boom and bust level of Trae is way higher than Luka...
