I watched the Phoenix game tonight to see the debut of Rudy Gay. I must say that I was very impressed with what I was seeing. He wasn’t forcing shots or taking over the offense. Instead he was trying to fit into the team(almost to a fault) and let shots come to him. He shot a 8-12 and got to the line 9 times and made 8. He didn’t foul but there were times I could see they haven’t had time to really practice together. He would run into teammates and cause a few turnovers by not really knowing where people were going to be but that’s expected. All in all if he plays like this every night intstead of playing for himself then I think the Kings made a pretty darn good trade. Oh and Aaron Gray coming out with 7 points and 9 boards while setting some good picks and hustling only sweetens the pot. Their defense is still atrocious and Gay should certainly be getting more than 1 rebound but as a losing team it’s babysteps at this point.

A bit early for this but tonight Gay played pretty well. I liked Gray’s contribution off the bench, hopefully he can help when Cousins has to sit. This team is very young and still looks inexperienced, they seem to struggle with the little things that players pick up with time. Obviously there has been quite a massive turnover in players throughout the last few months and their chemistry is not nearly where it will be in that same amount of time going forward, which is promising because these players all seem to be willing to work together on the court (not something the Kings have seen in a long while).

I didn’t watch the game, but I think he fits in really well with the Kings on paper. McLemore and Williams are both guys who don’t need the ball in their hands to be effective and can’t create their own shots particularly well. Cousins gets it on the post-up, and Thomas works the pick and roll. Gay is the only wing who creates off the dribble, so it shouldn’t make for an ugly offence because you won’t have people taking turns to iso.

If you look at Memphis and Toronto, he didn’t have guys capable of playing off the ball with him at either stop. Memphis had Conley, Z-Bo, Gasol and Allen. Allen can’t shoot to save his life, so he doesn’t draw any defensive attention, and Z-Bo took a LOT of shots himself. In Toronto he had DeRozan, who was essentially his doppleganger, Lowry, a scoring point guard, Amir Johnson, who doesn’t stretch the floor, and Valanciunas or whoever else they put in, who doesn’t draw double-teams yet.

The Kings are the first team where he’s been surrounded by shooters and a big man who can draw double teams. He has a distinct role in this lineup and I think we’ll see him blossom under the tutelage of Malone, who is seemingly a better coach than Casey on the offensive end.

If Cousins can control his ego, I’d be very curious to see what happens with this team next season.

Rudy Gay has to be 1 of the most complex players in the league…Dude has great athleticism, size, can take guys off the dribble, block shots, rebound ,hit 3s and defend (when he wants to)…But he’s yet to take that next step..He’s over paid..But not overrated…..

His play tonight doesnt surprise me at all,i have been a Grizzlie season ticket holder since he came into the nba..Its performances like tonight that got him an invite to TEAM USA……..When he was with Memphis,Zack Randolph & Marc Gasol might’ve been the All Stars, but it was Rudy Gay that coaches set their defenses to stop…But he doesnt bring it every night…

This year he uses 30% of his team’s possessions ,he’s shooting under 40% and yet only averages 19 points a game…..Only 4 other times has a player used 30% of his team’s possessions and shot under 40%..Iverson did it twice averaging 31 & 26 pts.Stackhouse and Baron Davis are the other 2..Stackhouse average 21 pts and Davis 23……

Looking at the Kings projected starting lineup,it seems that everyone in that lineup will need the ball to be effective….

    Cousins 35% usage

    Gay 30% usage

    Thomas 29% usage

    Derrick Williams 17% usage

    McLemore 21% usage

Rudy Gay has been an interesting player since his pre NBA days, I recall him moving up and down the draft board a lot over 2005/06 and his NBA career has followed a similar pattern. He has had 6 seasons between 19 and 20.1ppg, it seems that he reached a decent level in his 2nd season but has never really improved or declined much from it.

He is now in his 8th NBA season and not that far off 10,000 career points but with the overgenerous contract and a reputation as a stats padder at Toronto, he needs to rehabiliate himself back into the NBA. At Memphis he had other scoring options around him and in Sac-Town it will be the same, so if he can still produce his 18 to 20ppg on far better shot selection then he can be effective for the Kings.

As a Suns fan, I’d like to mention their great season so far, I’m not holding my breath and the flipside of the loaded 2014 draft is still an issue and seeing a little more of Alex Len when he is fit again. But we still have 3 top 30 picks next year as things stand so players can be added via a deep draft or we trade up perhaps.

It looked like he was getting to the spots on the floor where he’s most effective. Williams will be starting next to Gay pretty soon thanks to Jason Thompson’s play (or lack there of). Gay’s got some image work to repair, and turning this around or even making this a little bit of a more viable team is a start. Gray has something that the rest of this team doesn’t have, the willingness to communicate on the floor defensively. Can’t wait till Quincy Acy gets some playing time to see what this guy can do off the bench.
