I’m curious, could Toronto offer Kawhi the five-year max and give him a player option after every single season? Is that allowed, and has it ever been done before?

That would allow him to go to LA whenever he felt the time was right, but until then he could stay with the team that gives him the best chance at winning more titles.

I’m sure most teams would hate to give a player that much leverage, but Toronto already went all-in on just one year with Kawhi. It worked out pretty good, so why not do it again?

You cannot have multiple options only one in your contract before the final year of the contract. So if they sign him to a 5 year deal the option would be after year 4 only.

Just out of curiousity, is there a rule saying you have to sign for the season immediately following this one? That is, could a free agent today sign a deal for a contract that runs from 2022 onwards?

Is this illegal or did I just invent the new game changer?

They would not be under contract so they would have to sit out until 2022 if they did that, unless you mean an extension on their current deal, which yes the new deal wouldn’t go into effect until the old contract runs out or an agreed upon time before that.

So for example, I want to get my future secured from 2022-23 on. I don’t know where I want to be in the next three years, but I know 3 years from now I’d like to be in New York and I’ll be happy to take 120mil for 4 years at that time. If the team signing me agrees, and I able to sign that contract and still be a free agent now for the next 3 years?

Serious question, so whether you can or you can’t, can someone let me know?

You cannot sign a contract for years ahead if you are an FA as it would cause chaos and teams would have players sitting out. Lets say KD opted to sit out 2019-2020 season, he couldn’t this summer sign with a team which would have “provisional” cap space for 2020 onwards.

As regards Kawhi, I could see him doing a 3 year deal to stay in Toronto with the last year as a team option, this way he covers when Toronto will have FA money to spend and gets himself to 10 year veteran status when he can get the biggest deal.

What ever Kawhi does there is no way there will be a team option. Star players don’t allow teams to have that control. He most likely we have a player option though.

I understand you don’t agree to it, but what rule says you can’t? The salary cap not being known then is irrelevant because some can sign a multi-year deal now that includes future years

Kawhi should sign a one year deal with Clippers so he can get the five year max from them the following year. Gets him the most money in the city he wants to be in

They removed having multiple options in a contract with the last CBA. The Wade/LeBron/Bosh Miami deals had ETO after 4 years and then player options after 5 years but I think those were the last of their kind. Only way to get an option every year is to keep doing the LBJ/KD 1+1 deals and I don’t see anyone taking that risk anymore after what just happened.

No you can’t do that because cap figures for the following year arean’t finalized until the current league year ends. You can’t realistically know what amount of space a team will have 3 years down the line when they don’t even know what the salary cap will be.

    Superstars never do team options.

That makes no sense because if someone signed for 4 years you wouldn’t know what the cap is to be in those years either

Jeez, six negs just for asking whether a hypothetical scenario is within the rules?

Fine, next time I’ll just google it!
