Kawhi Leonard - Shades of Jordan?

After watching SA's last night's game with Houston, I couldn't help but seeing some similarities between Kawhi's and Jordan's games: the crazy palming of the ball, the midrange game, the crazy blocks and spectacular defense, the ice cold clutchness.

Of course, I'm not saying Kawhi is as good as Jordan, but anyone else think Kawhi is as close a player to Jordan (in terms of style of play) as we've seen in a very long time, maybe ever?

Black Mamba

Have you ever heard of a guy Named Kobe Bryant? He wasn't very good but he was just like jordan (sarcasm Kobe is top 5 ever) Kobe was pretty identical to MJ.

That would obviously be the easiest comparison, I think the way Kawhi palms the ball is extremely Jordan-esque, wouldn't see that from Kobe. His midrange game with the pullups also looks a lot like Jordan's while Kobe utilized the turnaround jumper more. The poise and efficiency too.

Jordan had more finesse to his game though, which is probably how Bryant was more similar.

I agree, the way he keeps the defense on their toes when palming the ball reminds so much of Jordan. Combined with that one-dribble pullup.

Kobe?

i hear what you're saying though. Such a complete player and I guess yeah looks a little more Jordan-esque the last couple years now that he knows how good he is and is more assertive. And unfortunately he won't win MVP over the numbers Russ and Harden have but he probably should and I'd certainly rather have him on my team over those two.

Kawhi's more Scottie Pippen

Kawhi's more Scottie Pippen with the mid-range. He has solidified himself as the best two-way player in my opinion, despite how great Lebron is.

Besides defensively and

Besides defensively and athletically, I don't like the Scottie Pippen comparison because Pippen was never the shooter that Kawhi Leonard is.

I watched a lot of the game last night and this guy is definitely a top 3 player in basketball. I can't say he's better than LeBron James, but it's close between him and Kevin Durant. It's James, Durant, Leonard and after that it just doesn't really matter much to me.

Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest player ever, so there's not going to be a perfect comparison, but Leonard definitely has some of those Jordan type qualities. The hands that allow him to do ish with the ball at both ends nobody else can. He's cat quick. He's quiet, but a MAJOR competitor like Jordan. He's a killer in the mid-range game and he's developing his turnaround fadeaway over either shoulder. Similar to Jordan, his handles don't wow you, but you can't stop him from getting where he wants to go. He finishes with dunks consistently in traffic.

I hope they don't sleep on this guy for MVP...

i think the OP meant

Physically imposing play from a smaller guy. Jordan was freakishly skilled for his body, and so is Kawhi.

Lebron is physically imposing as well but you can see how Lebron's shot is not textbook, and Lebron's overall game is just different. Kobe is also overskilled for guys his size, but he just was never the "man" that both Kawhi and Jordan are out there.

The thought of comparing

The thought of comparing kawhi Leonard to Jordan a few years ago would have seemed ludicrous. I'm not ready to go there yet, but the fact that this conversation is even being had speaks to just how far Leonard has come. I guess the obvious question now is, just how much better can kawhi get?

I have to admit, I was one of

I have to admit, I was one of those guys who were furious with fans especially with Spurs fans who said Kawhi was better than Paul George. And that was just last season. I always saw George as the more skilled player than Kawhi.

This season though, especially that last 3-game stretch where Kawhi basically carried the Spurs on his back, Kawhi cemented his case as a top 5 player in the league, and hell of a lot better player than PG.

He could have played alonside

He could have played alonside George smh. But in fairness, I'm giving some credit to the Spurs fantastic staff for development and their system. So he also may not have been the player he is now if he was playing in Indiana.
