How good do you guys think Jamal Murray is or will become.  I see him as a guy that can have a long productive career in the league but not an all star. He’s big for a PG and average size for a SG, so I think he’ll play both in college and the NBA.  He lacks elite explosive, length, and doesn’t have a strong frame, so I’ll think he’ll struggle to get past good defenders at the next level even though he’s very crafty and has good touch. I also don’t think his handle or vision is that great, but he changes speed very well and still finds way to get space. I think he’ll have a great year at Kentucky, be a top 15 pick, not top 5, and be a great 6th man in the league, but I’m interested to see what everyone else thinks of him since he has so much hype right now after his terriffic summer.

I think he’ll be what people hoped D’Angelo Russell would be.

Murray is a better shooter, more athletic, and a lot stronger. 204 already he’ll be at least 210 in the NBA.

Russell’s fairly maxed out at 200 lbs and it destroyed what tiny athleticism he had. I’m not even sure Russell could dunk in a game right now, except when left wide open on the break. Not that he was ever any different.

So I see top 4 potential for Murray, maybe even higher. At the end of the day he’s a winner and he wins games, even though his positional value isn’t great as a guard.

He’s also perfect sized to defend SGs, so he can play alongside smaller combo-guards who usually get drafted lower (good value) because they aren’t true point guards.

People erroneously compared DRussell to Harden, but Murray has a much better chance of developing into some version of that.

Man, why do you hate Russel so much? Yea I respect your opinion and all but when you take it to real extremes when talking about a player you love or hate. REAL EXTREMES. That’s why sometimes, you just come out sounding like a troll. You say Marcus Smart has a chance to be GOAT, and then come out saying the next time that Russel won’t be as good as Kendall Marshall. Just take it easy man.

I like Murray as much as the next guy but I don’t know if he is a true point guard. He likes to score and it was evident in the Pan Am’s when he was looking almost exclusively to make the ‘home-run’ play. I’m sure that at Kentucky Calipari will have him understanding the floor a bit better but as mentioned, he isn’t an elite athlete but does have solid size for the position. As the season gets underway we will have a better understanding of who Murray is as a player.

I might as well mention Steph Curry and get that out of the way. And being the size of a shooting guard means Murray can play with a smaller speed demon, leaving a SG to defend Murray.

If Curry was two inches taller and 20 lbs stronger, he’d be even better, and would exploit SGs even worse than he does point guards.

And Murray has better athleticism than Steph did or does.

He’s not the shooter that Curry is, but I think he can dominate the game with a similar finesse style, backed up by a lot more physicality.

Curry winning MVP really opened the door for guys like Murray, and we’ve already seen DRussell, Cam Payne, and Rashad Vaughn see their draft stock skyrocket because of their silky 3 point shots.

Gilbert Arenas is a guy who would have been drafted a lot higher if there had been a Steph Curry MVP in the recent years before Arenas’ draft.

Same with Steve Nash, obviously, and Isaiah Thomas.

Guys who are lights out from 3, and can do it off the dribble, are more valuable than ever, or at least finally recognized as such.

I honestly haven’t seen much of him, but from what I have seen I get a tony Parker feel with the way he handles the ball and controls the flop absinthe pace of the game. I like him

Murray doesn’t have Curry or Russell’s vision.

He reminds me of Brandon Roy, can play the point and facilitate the offense but he isn’t a true 1. Loves to score, and get others involved, a deceptive athlete, not a great one. Brandon Roy was a 6’6, 207 pound shooting guard, with a 6’8 wingspan, Murray is a 6’5, 207 pound shooting guard with a wingspan that has been measured at 6’7 & 6’8, so the players are very similar physically and stylistically.

I usually end up projecting these combo-types as SGs, because they lack the poise to play the point, but I see Murray actually being a PG long-term (from what I’ve seen).

His movements, range, smoothness and shoot-first mentality remind me a bit of Lillard (but a bigger, less explosive version).
