Sixers’ head coach Brett Brown has went on to say, Jahlil Okafor will not be in the rotation and doesn’t expect a change anytime soon.

    ——-

My issue with this situation is that the organization chose to get rid of Nerlens Noel to keep Okafor, because at one point in time they seen promise in him; now all of a sudden they are dragging him through the process without placing any trust in his ability to perform.

Sixers’ fans that are on this forum, what are your thoughts?

They didnt trade Noel to keep Okafor. They traded Noel to get value back on a player they were not going to give a roster spot to. I was also a supporter of Okafors but was I ever wrong.

Okafor is a very talented post and faceup scorer but the NBA is moving away from that. His play off the ball is terrible and he has no court awareness he just stands and watches. He also has a bad attitude and doesnt seem coachable. I saw in an interveiw he was asked about an infamous no defense YouTube video against the Heat and he said "apparently" hes accountable for giving up the offensive rebound as if to imply that his coaches were wrong. He alreaady lacks decent lateral quickness and athletisism for him to improve defensively he at least needs to understand his limitations and what needs to be done but he doesnt even think he played bad defense when a clip of him standing around doing nothing goes viral labelled "Joel Okafor Terrible Defense!". How can you teach a guy like that.

He needs to be humbled and go to another organization. Phillies lack of inteegrity during the rebuild obviously made for some loose structure. Jah has a big head.

I can see the logic of keeping Noel and moving Okafor but with Noel’s injury record and what his contract demands were, they didn’t feel he was going to be a player for them going forward. That great thing – hindsight has shown Noel turned down $70 million over 4 years but ended up only getting a qualifying offer of $4.1 million for this year. Teams would not pay Noel what he was after and he had to go back to Dallas or teams felt Dallas would match so wouldn’t tie up cap space by giving him an offer sheet knowing he would likely be matched.

Ironically I could see Dallas maybe looking at Okafor as their frontcourt isn’t that deep and the great Dirk cannot go on forever. If they think Noel might move on, getting a half decent young big in could appeal to them.

Let me just say that the Sixers did the Knicks a massive favour because I’m sure if they passed on Okafor that New York would’ve taken him over Porzingis. Can you imagine how bad New York would be?

I will post again and say that you have to feel for Jahlil Okafor. He grew up playing the game a certain way, emulating very good players and doing a good job of it, developing a post game many traditional big men would envy. The game itself flipped on him between the time he ended college and the time he started as a rookie. He went from a coveted talent to a dinosaur within an NBA season. It’s like his style of player went out overnight. Greg Monroe is in a similar spot,  but he got paid just in time. It’s very very hard to change your game after growing up playing a certain way, so you can imagine how that would affect his attitude and make him frustrated, especially getting dnp-cd’s now when he has always been “the man”. I hope he gets to a team that can use him.

It has been about guards and wings for several years. Monroe is good example though. I see no reason he can’t play that same role as the instant offense big off the bench. Maybe even if the 6ers don’t want to use him like that some team def will.

First please note Jah avg 17 ppg as a rookie on over 52% shooting which is rare for a big man.  Last year he was hurt the entire year before being shut down.

This year he has became a vegan and lost 20 pounds plus increased his shooting range.  Go look at his games vs Toronto and Boston he showcased the ability to hit step back 18 footers off the dribble.  Hes clearly working on his game and body and dedicated to getting better.  Hes still only 21.  Drummond plays no defense and cant shoot at all yet got maxed out.  There will always be a place in the league for a big who can score as easy as Jah.

With that said I hate the way Sixers are handling this.  He eats Amir Johnsons lunch everyday in practive yet Amir gets the minutes.

He shoule be the back up no doubt. Amir provides nothing more than him. At least it would help bild up his trade value if you they didn’t want to resign him.

There is no pint to benching him unless he blew up at a coach or something like that, that we don’t know about.

Okafor has now been listed as out with an illness.

I would be “mentally ill” as well, if I were going through what he has to feel on a nightly basis.

I am not a 76ers fan but they have done two head scratcher moves since the 76ers(snaked his way in)GM replaced hinkie .

They Traded Noel for nothing-Hinkie would have at least gotten you a pick.

    and

They have lowered Okafors value so much that I wouldn’t be surprise to see him either a) waived/not have his option picked up or b) traded for a low first or even a couple of 2nd rounders.

This is without even mentioning the celtics trade-Which they could have held onto that pick and force the celtics to choose between Futlz and Taytum at the 1 pick..Which could have lead to either of these two falling to 3rd overall pick..

These are the teams I could see working with him and the 76ers:

OKC-In a Kanter Light role have him help carry your bench offence,

Spurs-He could be Timmys clone at least offensively off the bench and could be mentored by him and Pop.

Lakers-If they want to have a Brook Lopez insurance(if he leaves or to help) or to help run a bench offense.

Clippers-If they wanted to go for a diffent look of the bench who could be more finese vs what Dj brings

    Pistons: Same as Clippers.

But knowing the 76ers GM he will probably let him walk for nothing :S

I’m actually starting to think that the front office does not want to risk the chance of  Okafor getting hurt to damage his value because he will be shipped this season.

I think you’re right. That’s the only reason I can see for him getting no playing time at the moment. I don’t know what the 76ers are hoping to get for Okafor, but he won’t increase in value on the bench. He looked solid and quicker in preseason as he slimmed down with his new vegan diet. Okafor is basically a worse rebounding version of Enes Kanter.

We can bring him off the bench or start him at Center so Al can play the 4.
