Ive been on here a couple of years now and have seen so much unwarranted high school hype. Each year it seems to be the same sort of hype.

It was Harrison Barnes (7th) and Perry Jones (28th)
Then it was Drummond (9th) McAdoo and Austin Rivers (10th) Anthony Davis got a lil hype.
Last year it was Shabazz and Noel getting the hype.
Now it is Wiggins, Parker getting all the talk with Randle getting a bit also.

Even before they played a college game you couldn’t dare say anything bad about Barnes or Perry Jones without getting negged.

Wiggins is suppose to be the greatest high school prospect since Lebron. Parker and Randle are also suppose to good.

My point is ppl are already saying these guys will be the top picks next year and next year’s draft will be much better but guess what – Guys were posting the same things about Harrison Barnes, PJ3 and McAdoo a couple of years back and how great they would be.

Yes its nice to get excited about new players, but please lets not go overboard…..

To me, it’s amazing how long the hype sticks around. I understand people become fans of guys as early as high school, but even when a guy is in the NBA doing nothing or has pretty much been spit out, there are guys using the “He was ranked high in high school for a reason” line.

A lot of guys don’t watch college ball either, so Perry Jones III high school resume is way more familar and a more viable reason to predict he averages 15 ppg as a rookie than two disappointing years at Baylor where he looked like a future role player.

Josh Selby is a perfect example. He was ranked above Kyrie Irving and everyone else including Barnes, Tobias Harris, Tristian Thompson, Terrance Ross, and 144th ranked Victor Oladipo. Yet despite being spit out of the league I’d be willing to bet you’d have 10 guys on this site defend him and say he got “screwed” or didn’t get a chance. An NBA head coach or GM couldn’t give two shits about how good a player was at age 17 playing against 17 year olds. A bad attitude often thwarts a talented young player’s journey, it’s not just being overmatched. Either way, I find it less annoying when people get excited with some initial hype than I do when people are still holding on to hype from 3 or 4 years ago as a reason why an disappointing player will still succeed.

I agree with players such as Rivers however Drummond is a bad example. He is showing why he got so much hype and warranted it.

The real problem is the recruiting sites discovered what a big revenue stream recruiting can be. Recruiting has become a huge industry that people pay good money to follow. So now recruiting sites like Rivals, Scout.com, etc. are in the promotion and hype business? It’s the reason why so many players are labeled 5 star recruits now. Fans, media fawn, and college fan bases flock to the message boards and forums gushing about all the 4 and 5 stars recruits they’ve signed. So the recruiting sites are pressured to boost players rankings all the time. And year after year people go off of the rankings and a few highlight tapes without ever actually seeing the players play and it’s not until the players actually hit college that people look at each other and realize this kid isn’t that good. But since they were highly rated people constantly say “a new scheme will help”, “they’re not being used right” and so on. Just look back over the years and look at the 5 star players. Sure there’s top notch/elite talents(which is what a 5 star player should be) but there’s also many you’ll see and wonder how that player was ever thought of that way.

There is a lot of over hype. But I do think this incoming class is a bit of a different story compared to the Harrison Barnes year.

I was thinking the same thing when it came to hype about this class, put me down as the guy that said Aaron Gordon won’t be something in the NBA.

Actually I wouldn’t mind having a Dajuan Wagner jersey. That’s definitely limited addition in more ways than one.

It is the old Cavs colors with the light blue trim on a black jersey. I will sell it to you for 50 dollars.

He went from 3 point specialist at Duke that couldn’t shoot to hustling forward off the bench who rarely shot at Villanova. I respected that transition.

Taylor King deserved that hype. He was one of the greatest shooters ive ever seen in high school. The problem with him was he was a drug addict. Hes now playing overseas somewhere, and still ballin
