Hawks have just acquired Chandler Parsons from the Grizzlies for Solomon Hill and Miles Plumlee.

I’m assuming this is just to free up even more playing time for the young guys and rookies. I don’t expect Parsons to do anything but collect his check while collecting dust on the bench. There won’t be a place to hide if the rookies are not what they’re cracked up to be – they’re being thrown into the fire immediately.

Time to see if those draft day trades were worth it. Yes they’ll be rookies and there will be growing pains, but we’ll be able to tell pretty quickly if these moves were worth it or more of reaches. Good.

you know, i thought the same at first but then i realized that all 3 players only have a year on their contracts.  it’s not a real salary dump type situation and i don’t think hill or plumlee get run in memphis either.

chandler may actually get some run and if the young core evolves and chandler has a livington like career resurrecton, maybe he will stay on in similar bench supporting role to livingston for $22M-24M cheaper.

the last 2 months of the season, when he got 20+ minutes per game; his stat line was not bad.

Chandler Parsons isn’t known as a great vet or mentor around the league. He’s not Livingston or Iguodola or James Jones.

I don’t care what sort of career resurrection he has, the Hawks aren’t going to let a guy with one year left on his contract (who probably won’t resign and they quite frankly don’t want to resign), take any minutes from their young core.

As a Grizzlies fan I’ve been Memphis critical of their past  transactions. But the front office deserves an A.for the work they’re doing this off-season.

I think Memphis just needed to get rid of Parsons as that relationship has been on the rocks. With Atlanta doing a 2 for 1 deal, it frees up roster spots and playing time for younger players.

Memphis has a lot of veteran guys that probably aren’t in their future plans that they could buyout or flip to a contender for more young guys or future picks. I could see them offloading Iguodala, Korver, Bradley, Crowder and Miles. Maybe someone will take Hill or Plumlee as expiring deals and Memphis can take back a bad contract tied with a young player or a pick.

These expiring deals have value as the Grizz can flip them to a team trying to free up space for next offseason, get off of the luxury tax or any other financial situation. Grizz can also be a home to take on bad contracts for a year or two while accepting assets to take on the contracts (its what the Nets did to great success the last few years).

Its one reason to keep cap space and remain flexible, it allows you to prey on teams that get desparate to unload a guy or feel financial pressure.

The Hawks have done the deal to free up a roster space I believe and Memphis probably feel that two smaller deals may be easier to offload or buyout even if it is just one of the guys than one large deal.

Korver has been flipped to the Suns who will buy him out but Memphis have got Josh Jackson in return so that gives them another younger face.

With Iggy I could see them keeping him as he’ll be a good locker room leader to replace Conley and he has 3 rings so it’s not like he desperately needs to chase one.
