I’m confused, if he was in the D-League and over 20 yrs old couldn’t he just been called up by a team if they really wanted him? Why would they draft him? He stunk at Georgia Tech.

He can be called up by any team and signed to an NBA deal. A team drafting him would ensure they could develop him in the D-League without worrying about other teams swooping him up and singing him.

Rice also put up 13 ppg 6.2 rpg 2 apg on 49/38/75 and was a 17 ppg player the last month or so of the D-League season. Including winning D-League’s player of the week, leading his team to the D-League title. Rice Jr. averaged 25 ppg 9.5 rpg 4.5 apg during the playoffs and isn’t just some kid in the D-League, he’s established himself as one of the best players in the league.

He really came into his own as a player the last half of the season, and could certainly play minutes in the NBA. He’s 6’6” can score in a variety of ways and is a 38% in game shooter from and an NBA length 3 point line. That’s better than a lot of other shooting guard prospects from the college line.

I’d look at him as high as 28 or so, but because of his strange path he could be a very good pickup in the late 30’s or early 40’s.

He’s not as seasoned, but I’d be willing to bet he has a better career than Boobie Gibson or Wayne Ellington, and probably would make one expendable next year. I don’t think he’ll be in the D-League next year.

I don’t think he ever declared for the NBA draft, so teams can’t sign otherwise I’m sure someone would have.

Since he never declared for the draft last year (and wasn’t automatically entered due to being a Junior) he’s draft eligible this year. Not sure how it works for foreign players. Essentially, he has to clear a draft (or possibly get drafted) to play on an NBA roster. He was our best player in 11-12 (and would have been this past year), so I don’t know if I’d go as far to say that he stunk. I didn’t see him as a first round pick, but he definitely showed flashes of NBA talent. After averaging 25/9.5/4.3 over a 6 game professional playoff stretch I think he’s shown he’s at least worth a 2nd round pick, and with this weak of a draft could see him going post-lottery first round.

Don’t D League fool you, They barely play defense and the competition is not that strong. Mid Second Round. Too many good-solid Sg prospects in this draft.

Most of the D-League players were above average division 1 players, and have only gotten more experienced and physically mature since then. average physical ability is way higher in the D-League on average than division 1.

It is true that they don’t play much system defense in the League, and the pace is ultra high which can skew some offensive projections, but if you want an example of why guys who can score in the D-League will probably score in the NBA as well, look no further than Jeremy Lin and Danny Green.

Lin’s full season in the D-League he shot .560 TS% , since then he has been a .542 TS% in the NBA. Danny Green even managed a higher TS% in the NBA, he shot .570 TS% in the D-League and .579 the next season on the Spurs.

So there’s a pretty strong correlation there, Rice pass the eye test in terms of athleticism pretty easily , though you’d note he’s got a slow first step, but certainly massive hop and general feel for the game. his also shown an ability to take contact on both ends of the floor, i generally have questions on a lot of these wing prospect being able to finish through contact at the next level (especially in their first couple years) but with Rice I have no doubt he can do it.

I worry that he can’t guard SGs in the NBA, but in terms of pure scoring ability, I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that he might out score all of these wing prospects next year if he gets the playing time. I can see KCP or McLemore outscoring him mayyyybe, but that’s about it. and he did have a pretty good steal / block / rebound ratio in the D-league ( in fact, he rebounded like a power forward.) against NBA sized players, that’s pretty helpful , to me he won’t be a good on ball defender but will do enough secondary things to cover for it.

He’s not as complete a player as Porter or Oladipo, but I’d go out on a limb and say that his scoring ability will shock most people next year.

Franklin I really like… defensively… but he’ll need to completely reinvent his offensive game in the NBA, I dont’ know that that looks like, maybe it’ll be great, maybe not.
