Arc12345ParticipantI just watched the Duke vs. Yale game. Yale is a very good team in the Ivy League, and they really had Duke against the ropes. If some questionable fouls hadn’t been called (which favored Duke all game), it would’ve been even closer.
I really don’t think Duke is that great. I dislike so much about that team, starting with Ingram and a lot of the other freshman who just aren’t THAT great. Ingram is terribly weak, and he’s not that great of a shooter. There’s no way they have the best freshman class in the country. No way.
I also think Grayson Allen is incredibly inconsistent. There are flashes of brilliance, and then flashes that make you shake your head. The only player that looks anything close to reliable is Matt Jones. Unless things change drastically, I just don’t see this team being that special. Nothing like last year.

Arc12345ParticipantI have no negative opinions towards Duke. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think their fans are annoying, but I am totally unbiased about their team.
I have no horse in college ball.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI think Duke gets a pass because of their run last year. Their freshman class isn’t in the same galaxy as last years class. Not even close. Luke Kennard can’t hit a 3 to save his life and he’s known to be a shooter. Brandon Ingram is nothing special. Derryck Thornton I do like though. He has a chance to be good, but he’s so young now, he should be a senior in high school. I’m miffed on Chase Jeter. I can’t believe he was a top ten recruit. It’s bad when Marshall Plumlee is starting over you. Of course I’m a known Duke hater. Once they actually go on the road and play in a true road game in another teams gym, there might be some ugly blowouts in their future. This team is absolutely porous on the defensive end and needed all-world perfrmances by Grayson Allen to beat VCU and Georgetown. Duke is down this year in my opinion, but of course they have Tatum and Giles coming in next year which could set up Duke for another run.

ph90702Derryck Thornton is eighteen years old. He was born on May 30, 1997. He should be a freshmen in college. As a UNLV fan, I’m glad that we got Stephen Zimmerman over Chase Jeter, who I figured we had a great chance at since his dad played for UNLV.

trelos6ParticipantAmile Jefferson will be huge for Duke this year. He is a solid post player, and a good defensive big.
Duke has lots of potential, but are very raw. Ingram, Jeter, Thornton, Kennard should all stay for their sophmore years. Of these, the only guy I see leaving is Ingram.
Duke is primed to be a contender next season.
Tyus, Justice and Jahlil were all great players, and were all winners who could dominate the game in their own way, so obviously it was going to be hard to replace these guys.
I’d be happy with a Sweet 16/Elite 8 for this Duke team, although if Ingram catches fire, and Allen plays more consistently, they have a shot at the Final 4.

bickbackbeboolParticipantEveryone has something to say early on in the season.
Just give them time. I cannot believe people are actually writing off Ingram. Say what you want, but hes not a scrub.

circumlocution75ParticipantLast year’s Duke team had some very mature, very polished talent…. This year’s team is a raw….. But Coach K will bring them along…. & come time for the ACC Tourny & March Madness…… coach K will have that team ready to maximize their poitential…… But that may Not be a Title…. or even a Final Four appearance….
Remember last year Coach K made a major adjustment by putting Winslow at the PF position & it changed everything for Duke…. & then suddenly Duke was firing on all cylinders…. & they rode that wave to the National Championship…..

IlladelphParticipantI don’t really like Duke because I find their fans to be unbelievably annoying, bandwagon types who get in your face but don’t really know much about college ball. The fans remind me of Jay-z in 99 problems where he describes some fake tough guys: "you know the type, loud as a motorbike, but wouldn’t bust a grape in a fruit fight". Sums up Duke fans perfectly.
Now that I have that out of my system, I will also state that I respect the ball players at Duke, because they are generally very good and they cannot help that the Duke fans are tools. That said, I am really unimpressed so far by Duke’s freshman class. Ingram got so hyped up in high school, that I kind of feel bad for the guy. He is not NBA ready. He is not even NCAA ready. The guy looks pretty slow, and he is not getting his shot to fall yet. He is not able to shake his defender, and get his shot off, never mind making it. I never saw him in high school, but he looks slow at the college level. He is so thin though, I suspect he will get faster as he gets stronger and fills out. He will be a high lottery pick though on hype alone. If he develops at all this year, he will be a lock for the top 5 next June.
The rest of the team just frankly does not impress. Chase Jeter, and Luke Kennard, are really underwhelming for McDonald All-Americans. Kennard I saw in high school, and he could shoot the lights out the gym. I don’t know what is happening with the guy, but he is not living up to expectations. Jeter, I never saw but for someone so highly ranked, he is not delivering either. Thornton I think is impressing as a SG, but he is not a great point guard. I think if Tyuus Jones was still on the team, it would be way better, because right now Duke does not have a skilled PG to get all of that talent in line.
Grayson Allen deserves his own paragraph. He is an athletic SG, but he struggled mightily against Kentucky. It was uncomfortable watching him drive repeatedly to the rim, only to get soundly rejected. I think he drove 3 or 4 times in a row at one point and kept getting owned. It was hard to watch, and he looked not good. He also could not shake off Isaiah Briscoe to get a clean look at the basket. As a catch and shoot guy, I think Allen is solid, but he has no iso game, and cannot get his shot off against a good defender. Also, he could not guard Murray, or Briscoe at all.
So, in summation, I don’t think Duke is nearly as good as everyone thought they would be. It is early though, and K is an elite coach, so maybe by tournament time they will look a lot better. Right now they don’t even look like a top 10 team to me.
