draft lotto notes

today's draft lotto did not go near as expected but here's some thoughts i had on winners and losers.

winners

pelicans - this is the easiest no brainer pick for biggest winner. zion is a piece that could convince AD to stick around.

grizz - kept their lotto protected pick. are in a good position to take a game changer in either ja or rj.

lakers - moving up to #4 improves any package they intend to trade with. worst case, they just get a better prospect by the move up.

boston - losing grizz pick was not a horrible thing. the next year's pick is top 6 protected, then unprotected the following year. have to believe grizz are in complete rebuild and this pick will improve value with future, better drafts.

break evens

chicago - dropping from 4 to 7 hurt but IMO, chicago was going to target a PG. garland or white at 4 would of been a stretch. at 7, there is less pressure on the player and GM (assuming one of the two is still there).

miami/charlotte/minnesota - these are all teams that draft position did not change or marginally changed.

losers

knicks - ouch...losing the #1 hurt. losing #2 hurts more. if memphis takes rj over ja, the knicks will have some serious decisions since they are linked to kyrie rumors and just brought in DSJ.

cavs - another team that missed out on big 3. they have a lot of needs so will get a good player but they really needed a potential star like zion or rj.

suns - this team was lined up to fill a big need with ja. cannot see any scenario where ja drops to 6 so suns will have to settle with garland or white or go with a wing and see if johnson/melton/booker can handle PG role for another year.

hawks - 5 and 9 to 8 and 10. that hurts... this team is in rebuild but pick 5 had more prospects that fit with young and collins than 8. they will likely have to go big at 8 and then best wing at 10.

wiz - another team that was going to struggle without wall for another season could of used as much firepower as possible. dropping from 6 to 9 takes out a chance at an impact player like culver or hunter.

From a Boston perspective

From a Boston perspective they never wanted the Grizz pick to convey this year for the very reasons you laid out. In fact, them being in position to draft Ja at #2 probably increases the chances that they go full rebuild and move Mike Conley by next year's trade deadline.

I’m generally torn between

I’m generally torn between Morant and Barrett. If the Grizzlies are equally as torn, you go with Barrett because Connely is around. Then you’ve got the Knicks picking. Would they pass on Morant because of Dennis Smith and Mudiay? Positionally, every team seems to have a decent starting PG.

I really think the Grizzlies are a complete tear down. I don’t see a lot of sustainable pieces. Jaren Jackson is great. Who else is? I think they neeed to ditch those solid vets and tank (if that still works) for 3 years. Morant is a really great square 1 player. Westbrook is his favorite player. It shows. The only time he relinquished the ball is right before he gets an assist. I don’t know the numbers, but I bet he was the most ball dominant player in college. Sounds good for square 1. I’d be afraid to add him to a more established team.

Why would they go full

Why would they go full rebuild with no pick the next year and terrible lottery odds? Besides the Grizzlies dont do full rebuilds. They try to make smart basketball decisions bit by bit and improve the team the same way weve seen the Nets go about it recently. If they do go Morant they better trade Conley before they make that pick or teams will lowball the hell out of them. I think they go Barrett.

As a Grizzlies fan I am not

As a Grizzlies fan I am not sure what we should do. Keep Conley for another year and go with RJ Barrett at the 2?

Garland, Hunter, and Bol Bol are 3 other guys I like.

I am not 100% sold on Ja Morant. Not sure if he and Jaren Jackson Jr are the best fits.

As a Grizzlies fan perhaphs

As a Grizzlies fan perhaphs you would know more about the mindset of the front office. Didn't the team try their best to win games down the stretch in order to convey the pick this season? From my outside point of view that sounds like a team wanting their picks going forward for a full rebuild.

2020 draft

i actually thought same thing on barrett vs. ja. another factor is the 2020 draft seems to be PG heavy. i was leaning more to RJ the more i thought about it. could still move conley either way.

The Grizz taking Morant,

The Grizz taking Morant, which they should, means even lower offers than what they were going to get for Conley.

As the Grizz, considering Conley's salary, I would gamble and ask for #14 and Hayward from Boston. The Celtics should consider this. Conley would be a really good fit if they lose Irving.

For Memphis, I think Hayward is owed the same money, and while he's not the Utah Hayward, he's not Parsons, and it gets you a late lotto pick for Conley.

It'll be interesting if Zion demands to go elsewhere. I don't see any reports saying he was thrilled. Apparently AD still wants out, so we'll see how his principles hold up against the supermax. No doubt his agent is all about lining his own pockets and will apply pressure. The Pelicans could end up keeping both guys but it also wouldn't surprise me if they ended up with neither.

If the Knicks sign a key wing in FA like Durant, I'd be more inclined to get both 8 and 10 from Atlanta for 3 and fill out the roster. They are not going to win a title next year. They have Knox, Robinson and DSJ, so as long as you draft well, multiple lotto picks should be greater help as theyll be picking 15-20 next year if they get Durant.

zion

felt same vibe from zion that he wasn't excited about NOP. maybe it was just such a big shock that he wasn't prepared to talk on the city or possiblity of playing with AD.

was also wondering if NY would think about moving up to 1 with 2020 1st rd pick in a deal similar to doncic-young trade. NOP can use either ja or rj who fit needs. NY gets their guy and assuming they get their FA wish list, the 2020 pick will be mid-late 1st.

NOP are the big

NOP are the big winners.

Memphis have nice options they will almost certainly be choosing between Morant and Barrett. Morant is the better prospect IMO but they have Conley with two years left, might they call the Knicks to see if they have intetest in Morant and get another asset and then draft Barrett to pair with Conley.

Knicks fell down but will still likely have chance to draft Barrett so not a total disaster.

Lakers were another of the winners, they get best of the rest. The trade options have been discussed above but is their a NBA ready glue type guy to fit around LBJ and any top FA they get.

Cleveland and Suns were probably the biggest losers as they slipped from top 3 back into best of the rest.

The Hawks fell a bit but the pick from Dallas came over and two top 10 picks aren't a disaster. They might get a fair few calls about trade up options and I could see them risking one on Bol Bol.

Boston 14, 22, 27 not as high as they may have hoped but Ainge has options.

A lot of love for RJ Barrett

A lot of love for RJ Barrett at Two. I see him as a role player in the league. Better than Stanley, worse than Brown. Morant and Garland should go two, three.
