Words have power and how you use them is part of your responsibility as a literate person (some forget that in the annoynmous internet). The N word has a long history of prejudice, hate and pain that come along with it. If you are willing to use that word then you should be ready to accept the strong emotions and reactions that will come with it. The N word was used by white land owners to belittle black slaves and show that they were “less than human.” It certianly should not be used as a joke and I think the whole “black people can say it but white people cant” is a way for new generations of black people to take the power of the word out of the hands of the people who created it (whites) and change the meaning of it to create a new(acceptable and non offensive) meaning for the word in which the people who were branded with this racial slur now have control over its new meaning.
