aramboneParticipantDurant played 2 guard his first couple years, could Giannis defend the position, as soon as this year? Part of the reason he is seen as a long term project is that he is underweight for the 3 spot. His feel for the game is advanced and he has at least average ball handling for a two guard.
He might only be a situational shooting guard, because combo guards are mostly too fast for him, but i would imagine he could play off bigger shooting guards and still contest their shots with his length and instincts.
I’m thinking about my celtics at 16, who are reportedly interested in Schroeder as well. Drafting Schroeder decreases Rondo’s trade value because teams know the celtics need to trade him.
Drafting Giannis is a bit different, and post-Rondo, Avery Bradley could start at pg while Giannis handled playmaking duties from the SG and SF positions.
If Giannis simply isnt viable as a SG, now or in the future, it’s trickier to draft him because jeff green is our SF and doesn’t play as well at PF.
Green played some SG last year but it didnt work out great because he got beat defensively.
Giannis should be able to play some PF eventually, but that’s a long time from now.
Mo Harkless played pretty well at SF last year, and he weighed in at 207 at the combine. Giannis at 205-215 should be able to play some SF even this year as an 18 year old, if the Celtics were impatient.
So what do you think, could Giannis play some 2 guard, now or in the future, or is he just not athletic enough?

B-ball fanParticipantI don’t think any team drafting Giannis should be looking to bring him over immediately. He will probably play in Spain before coming to the U.S. Perhaps Giannis could play SG, but he certainly doesn’t seem best suited for the position. Him and Green could possibly handle the forward position in the future, but I think we need to see more of Giannis against top competition before we can project him to play a specific role in any team’s rotation. Most teams that could pick him are doing so because they think he could be the BPA, not necessarily because they have an already defined spot in their team’s rotation for him.

aramboneParticipantthanks for the thoughtful reply, though i think Giannis is a pretty natural fit at sf, like Durant is. I also agree that Giannis would benefit from staying in spain for a year, which would also preserve his full rookie contract for the team drafting him.
But i think his passport situation really hurt him. No international competition until recently, no Nike Hoops Summit, no Draft Combine, no tests against better competition that could possibly reveal him to be nba ready.

DondiJohnParticipantwas players playing or to play out of their position.
Bradley a PG? Well he can handle ball handling duties but a facilitator, no thanks
Green playing SG? Was that lineup Rondo Pierce Green Bass KG, then he’s a 3. Green is definitely a 3 not a 2/3.
The 2 position is also known as the SHOOTING guard position. If you cant shoot (ala Tony Allen), then you should find ways to contribute especially in the defensive end. And for Giannis as an 18 year old rookie playing against the worlds best, good luck defending them.

aramboneParticipantGreen did indeed defend the 2 in that lineup because Pierce was even worse defending 2s at this stage. Like i said, Green couldnt handle it either.
You also missed the part where i said Giannis would handle the facilitating duties for Bradley.
The question i was asking was whether Giannis might be able to guard at least some SGs at any point in time, which includes the future, which includes a year or two from now.

lockdownDMy favorite thing about Giannis… that he’s African, you know he’s gonna fill out.
He’s my favorite SF in this draft, for sure.

European BasketballerParticipantHis parents are Nigerian, and so is his oldest brother. Giannis and his other 3 brothers are all Greek.
They don’t have any Nigerian citizenship, passport, and have never been to Nigeria.
So his parents are Nigerian, not Giannis. He’s Nigerian descent, not Nigerian.

cfan38ParticipantThe question isn’t can he play SG its can he play at the NBA level. If he makes it, it will be as a SF who possibly play point forward. Much like Jeff Green can guard some SGs Giannis may be able to do the same (in a few years) but he is not a SG.

Im Your FatherParticipantBut is he “too African to guard Lebron James?” That’s the real question.

McDunkinSo Aran you need to update his profile
add to weaknesses: Too African to guard Lebron.
and to strengths: Too African to not fill out.

donatoParticipantWhy stop at the 2? Maybe he could play PG and C at the same time and give ally oops to himself.

GreekParticipantIts only 18, has the lenght of a PF, and its a high possibility to not done growing. I can see him playing face up PF much easier than SG.
