Clippers retool

The Clippers recently made one of my favorite trades of the deadline and got rid of an expiring Tobias Harris contract for a good young player in Landry’s Shamet, and a good young center in Ivica Zubac. There has been rumors of Kawhi and KD or both coming to join La in free agency but how likely is it that they get one of those guys? My question is if they don’t land Kawhi or KD then what should the Clippers do? Tank for a couple of years and acquire top picks or package picks for someone like Devin Booker? What would you do?

I doubt they leave

I don't think both KD and Kawhi are leaving their teams. Kawhi has a good thing going in Toronto and so does KD with the Warriors. I think both might do the same thing Paul George did and surprise everyone by staying put. As far the clippers, they did well at the trade deadline and I think they just need to continue rebuilding through the draft and hope to sign a decent free agent or two.

Honestly I think SGA has

Honestly I think SGA has potential to be a franchise cornerstone if they groom him correctly. He could be everything Shaun Livingston had the potential to be before the injury. Could very well see a De’Aaron Fox-like jump from him in year 2. They need to make his development the top priority regardless of what happens in free agency. That said, I do think they’re the frontrunner to land Kawhi. But if that doesn’t happen and SGA doesn’t become the franchise player many think he can be, then I think you start thinking about tanking for 2021 for the likes of Jalen Green.

This is what I was thinking

This is what I was thinking too, I’m super high on SGA and think he will be a top 20 guy pretty soon. Evan Mobley is apparently the next big star so either him or Green would be great.

I think if the Clippers don't

I think if the Clippers don't land a top free agent this year they'll continue trying to draft and develop young players then take another shot at top free agents the following off season. The Warriors are still incredibly formidable so there's little point in the Clippers taking on big deals for any free agents who aren't top notch for a while.

1st rd pick

clippers are looking like they are bringing in quality, young guys in sga, shamet and zubac. if robinson turns into a spark plug scoring threat as advertised, they have a lot of pieces. harrell's play has been unreal for what he is being paid and gallo is a decent price for 1 more year of service (or deadline trade next year).

i'm interested to see what happens with their draft pick. if they fall into the lotto and get it back, there are a lot of boom or bust candidates. if they can hit on another sga, watch out.

and i still believe kawhi is on his way to lead this team. kawhi wants to be the team lead and this roster is perfect for that. kawhi and a 2nd or 3rd tier FA would definitely put LAC in contention.

Problem is I don’t think

Problem is I don’t think Kawhi will leave Toronto unless they get bounced early in the playoffs or he’s just unhappy there. I think realistically KD is more likely because of the market and the success they had earlier this year. They have the assets to land another star with all the picks and some quality players they have.

It seemed a bit strange for a play off team to go into rebuild but maybe they knew Harris would be asking for too much money and decided to cash in on him. If it was going to be a total rebuild then they would likely have cashed in on Lou Williams too as he'd generate a lot of interest.

They do have a lot of cap space and can make runs at a couple of FAs. Once Gallinari expires after next season there are no big contracts on the cap so they might have a look at FAs in the next couple of years and not go all in this summer. They can add guys on a one year deal to fill out the roster. The younger guys will have time to develop and they have future picks coming across so the team has a lot of flexability.

Clippers played well this

Clippers played well this season, as did Tobias Harris. If i were the clippers I would of tried to sign him long term. I would of give him $20mill per season

They did

Clippers offered Tobias a 4 year 80 million extension and he turned it down. Tobias looking to get paid and I think someone will pay him.

I didn't know that. I think

I didn't know that. I think $20mill or low 20s max would be fair for both teams. After all the Clippers just traded for him after giving up Blake Griffin for low 30's.

He is not as good as Blake Griffin so I can see why the Clips didn't want to offer him $30mill.

I like Tobias Harris as a player, its a shame he was looking at $30 mill per season. I am not sure if some team would offer him $30mill. Maybe the Knicks would be if he wants to compete to win, I would rather take less $$ and play for a contender. Losing 50 games a year is not fun !!

Their chances are great

Clippers have a great chance to land one of the major players this offseason. One thing that isnt mentioned about the Kawhi situation is the tax rate in Canada. It may not be about the money but when youre making millions of dollars it means youre paying millions of dollars in taxes, that is not attractive. Kawhi def leaves Toronto for a western squad, Clipps being the favorites.

Even if they wiff, as others have said, SGA, Shamet, Harrell, Zubac are all solid young players to build around.

Taxes

From what I have read/heard, the taxes of playing for a California based team isn't that much higher than playing in Toronto (I'm no expert and only did a basic Google search). But if that is the case, I don't think that would be a deciding factor when choosing between Toronto and LA.

Yeah I read up on it a bit as

Yeah I read up on it a bit as well probablh saw the same articles and came to the conclusion that if I'm an NBA superstar looking to sign a max contract you can gaurantee that I would not be signing in Toronto or LA under andy circumstances. I would be in one of those no tax states like Texas or Florida without a doubt. From what I understand its like a $75 million difference or something of that nature. Just too much money especially when I'll be very competitive in Dallas with Doncic and Porzingis.
