Its not about this year. Its not even about next year. After the 2011-12 season we have Ray Allen and KG coming off the books (thats 32.2k). For that season you have rondo and piece signed for 26k. The cap is 58k so we have 22k to play with. Jeff Green most likely will be signed (althou he hasnt proven why he should yet).

Everyone here is complaining about the Perkins / Green trade. I believe that trade was specifically done for Dwight Howard. He will be a free agent when KG and Allen come off the books. The celtics can then sign a max deal. Dwight Howard will then be paired with Piece, Rondo and Green. That is an atractive young core with a vet leader who has won an NBA champ before. The only other destination I can think of that would be attractive is NY, but they will have to carefully manage their cap. The lakers would have to do a sign and trade and most likely lose bynam, the only other atractive players are an old kobe and pau. Bais aside I would rather make a run with the celtics.

Additionally draft Jordan Williams this year. Work the baby fat off like they did with Perkins. The 2012-13 lineup then looks as follows:

    C: Dwight

    PF: Jordan Williams

    SF: Jeff Green

    SG: Pierce

    PG: Rondo

Danny Ainge starting rebuilding this year, the celtics should have a smooth transition.

The trade wasn’t dope for Dwight. Ainge wasn’t looking that far ahead. After the Daniels injury the C’s really had no one to back up Pierce. Ainge was staring down the possibility of facing Carmelo and LBJ in the playoffs and wanted someone to come off the bench to rest PP/play D. The other big factor is that he knew Perkins was gone after the season and thought this was a better way to transition to the future/help now. He obviously underestimated how big of an emotional toll trading away Perk would have on the team especially Rondo. I am not even sure if they can resign Green, it will be an itneresting off season to say the least. I would love Dwight to come to the C’s but I think it’s more likely that he is traded. Even if he does go the FA route, Boston is going to be a hard sell. You can sell him on Rondo and…… Rondo and Dwight as your two big stars at the end of the game is pretty terrifying, Pierce will be damn old.

Yeah, but don’t forget the Celtic pride and mystic. They could have Bill Russell helping on the sell job. Orlando has a few things going for it (a) they can offer more, (b) since there is no income tax in Florida, Howard keeps more of what they offer (that is at least a million dollars a year difference, don’t discount that that is part of why the Big Three ended up in Miami as well), and (c) he seems loyal and everyone loves him a little bit more.

But I think he will want to play for the Lakers a little bit more and I think the Lakers will offer Orlando Bynum for Howard in a sign and trade and Orlando will take it. I can’t think of any reason why either team wouldn’t do that, except maybe if Orlando is scared of Bynum’s injury issues.
