Over the past few months I have not been a huge fan of Carter-Williams because he was not able to produce on the offensive end for Syracuse and I didn’t think he could do much for my Kings. IMO pass first point guards in the NBA is just not something I want as an integral part of my offense though I do like his defensive potential(both have been major selling points of his).

I was looking at his high school scouting reports and I was intrigued by how he was touted as a “big-time scorer” and three point specialist while his weaknesses were strength and defense. I heard he tweaked his shot and lost confidence in it, but I like his stock a lot more knowing that he once had these offensive weapons in his arsenal. I got caught wondering if he could somehow harness this ability of his again. What are your guys thoughts on this?

What exactly do you mean by not wanting a pass-first PG? You don’t like someone initiating the offense getting people involved? I’m not gonna neg you, just don’t understand what you mean. Despite Tony Parker being the Spurs main offensive threat, he definitely looks to find rollers and shooters on every possession. He just happens to be an elite slasher, thus he’s used as a scorer as well. That’s not a knock on pass-first PGs, just a testament on how valuable star-players are in the NBA.

To get back to your point, I think MCW would not fit with the Kings. If Burke’s still a board they should opt for him. He brings leadership, shooting, (which they need in order to create space for Boogie. Thronton can be too much of a ball-stopper liability to depend on consistently), while still having a quarterback mentality that will help initiate an offense. If Burke’s gone, then they should nab Zeller, Oladipo, and perhaps Bennett.

To correct my previous comment, its not that he is a pass-first point guard. Being able to initiate the offense and play smart and selfless basketball is objectively a positive trait for incoming draftees.I just do not believe there is room in the league for point guards with their sole offensive threat being passing to become a star in the NBA anymore.

My main question was if MCW possesses much more offensive capabilities than many have been led to believe because of his college statistics. I wonder if NBA teams look at what separated him in High School as a scorer and become more confident in improving his offense at the next level.

Not because i think he’ll ever win a MVP award, though I do think he has a chance to make a few all-star games.. What makes him valuable is his ability to guard a 2 but play the point and get everyone involved. Being able to see over the defense has been proven as a HUGE advantage in making the best pass possible in any given situation.. Oscar, to Magic, to now LeBron who we constantly see throwing cross court jump passes on a dime.. for a dime. These were things we were taught not to do in our youth, but a special few are able to pull it off, and it opens up the floor and stretches the defense drastically, forcing rotations in a way they don’t normally practice.

The potential for that isn’t even what makes him such an important asset. The NBA, College and even most city playground courts are full of 6′ – 6’3″ super athletes who can attack defenses and score a lot of points, but are just missing that certain something that it takes to be a true Number 1 and run a team efficiently. Monte Ellis, Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, Dragovic, Jrue, Mo Williams and even to a lesser extent D Rose and Westbrook could all be paired up with MCW and work very well. Even if it was just short spurts where they could physically impose their will on a smaller PG on the post or the wing and force double teams or go for big scoring runs.

If I were drafting.. Pistons at 8 for sure.. Charlotte or Suns if they wanted to trade down.. and he def shouldnt last past OKC or Philly..

Intrigued by big time scoring in High School? Every major college player was a big time scorer. If you blend the scoring with winning and leadership skills yopu might have something.

MCW is a very interesting player to me, he has the potential to be one the best passers in the NBA with his height and natural unselfishness ability to get people open. He can also be a stat sheet stuffer getting steals, blocks, boards and throwing dimes. With all that being said if he starts hittin 3s at a high rate he could easily be the best player out of this draft.OR say his shot doesn’t get any better, and he is to slow to get by anyone to create for others, and can keep up with the guards in the NBA and become a bench player. You never know though at that’s what makes the draft interesting.

Nerlens Noel averaged 13 ppg in high school. VIcotr Oladipo averaged 7ppg. A little bit of a blanket statement, but I get what you are trying to say.

I like Carter-Williams, saw a lot of him in college, and I still can’t figure out what kind of a player he is going to be. He can certainly get to the rim due to his size and handle but his jumper is shaky at best. Lots of defensive potential due to his size. Milwaukee if BJ signs elsewhere, Atlanta, or Cleveland would all be good fits for him, imo.

We don’t even know if Marshall is going to pan out to be anything though. I think MCW is a lot like Marshall, but better in just about every aspect of the game, and the difference defensively is huge.

I don’t think he’ll be Rondo either, but I think he can definitely be an above average starter in the NBA.

You hear a lot about Jason Kidd when people bring up MCW. They obviously aren’t on the same level as prospects but both play a similar style. Two things will decide if MCW is successful in the NBA.

    1. Will he be able to get all the way to the rim and finish over bigger stronger players?

    2. Will he improve on his jumpshot?

Jason Kidd went from shooting under 30% from downtown as a rookie to being 3rd all time in 3 pointers made. He couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn this year in the playoffs and retired but he turned his one weakness into a strength. If MCW can at least improve his jumper to the point the defense must respect it he could be a quality NBA player…if not he will just be another guy.
