Ok, if you had a very late second round pick who would you take?

For me, it would be a toss up. Neither have a position in the league, but Griner is taller. She might also be more intense.

In a one on one matchup, not sure who I would take.

Yeah like seriously Griner shouldn’t even be looked at for Div 1 men’s basketball…what NBA team would want a 6’8 , 200 pound center with no hops and no speed? If she where to play in the NBA I would place a bet on who would end up with more dunks in there careers between her and Jimmer and she would still probably pick Jimmer

We have to remember that Mark Cuban said “IF she’s the BEST AVAILABLE” he would take her, he didn’t comment on the likelihood of her being the best available. I’m assuming he just didn’t want to appear sexist.

I’ve watched Adonis Thomas for two years. I guess he should try to be a 6’5 small forward or even a shooting guard. Don’t see what he brings to the table unless he was playing tentatively after his injury last year. Or, maybe we used him wrong.

I still like DJ Stephens better among Memphis Tigers players.

Griner would have the height and length advantage on Adonis Thomas. Not super excited about AT. Griner brings more height, length, energy, and intangibles.

Thomas would still be infinitely times stronger, faster, more athletic and skilled so it wouldn’t really matter. She wouldn’t be able to guard him on the wing (he’d blow by her) or down low (he’d outmuscle her). She can only score in the paint and he could just use his strength to keep her out of the paint. He would probably win like 21-5, if not by more.

im really surprised people are saying this women’s name with anybody in the NBA, or even d1 level. she would get demolished! these guys are the best players in the world. dont get me wrong, she is the best woman bball player in the world, hands down (i think) but she shouldnt be compared to an NBA player. I would love to see what she could do against the center that plays at my school, which is one of the shittiest d3 teams in the country! and i know for a fact he would dominate her. im sorry, im getting mad that anybody thinks she can bang with an NBA player.

im not the least bit sexist but why do you think its so wrong to hit a woman? or if a guy takes advantage of a girl its BAD but if a girl does it then its SEXY…..because there is a BIG difference between men and woman. Granted were talking about brittney griner who isnt your avg woman but i mean look at how she dunks(very impressive for a chic) but i mean she is dunking like how a 6’1 man would. There is NO WAY she could play mens pro basketball anywhere(nba, overseas, dleague) to the dude who said she couldnt play @ his d2 school i agree with him. I would say she prob couldnt play for half mens d3 programs. people just dont understand that no matter how good she is for a girl, it is totally ridiculous

I don’t think people understand the difference in competition levels. Yes, Griner is a great woman’s player but that’s all she is and ever will be. She couldn’t sniff the NBA, I understand she’s 6-8 but the NBA has 6-8 two guards. It’s hard to argue with anyone about this because when you’re against Griner everyone will call you sexist. Which couldn’t be any more wrong, I’m just a realist. I agree with the guy who said she couldn’t play D-2 mens ball. Competition levels between men and women are so different and i don’t think people realize that. With that being said, I respect what she has done on the women’s level.

The upper limit of what a female athlete is capable of is more then enough to compete in the NBA.

Before you laugh at that statement, look at the female 100m sprinters in the last olympics or the women who compete in the crossfit games. I’m not sure there’s a single NBA player who could beat any of the women who made the 100m final. It’d be close, but I doubt it. Almost all of these women are well under 6ft and they are still faster then the giants that populate the NBA.

The difference between the sex’s, although biological, really takes place in youth. Men are taught be be strong and women are taught to be pretty. So from a very early age, while watching other members of your sex in your family, on tv, at the park… you tend to relate to what they’re doing. If women started early on to train as hard as the men do, to physically push themselves as hard as the men do, at that point, this question of “will there ever be a female NBA player?” becomes less laughable. The other component of this equation is the exact same as it is for the men. Lebron is unique because of his size and athletic gifts…genetically speaking. For a woman to have a chance in the NBA she needs to be a genetic freak to begin with. She will need to be over 6ft no matter what. She will also need to be as skilled as the men are… and the only way to become as skilled is to practice against the men.

At the moment WNBA players are not as skilled as the men and they are not as athletic. With the proper training from a young age I think its possible… and I only mean “possible”, that we could have a woman play in the NBA at some point. Might that woman be Britney Griner? No. She stagnated a long time ago. She relies on shear size. It would take her atleast 2 years of intense training in all facets of biomechanics to even have a shot… and physcially speaking I don’t think she has it in her. Its like trying to train Shawn Bradley to move, run and jump like Lebron. Its possible, but the work it would take to undo a lifetime of habits is extremely remote.

The more interesting part of this is what would happen in an NBA game when men are guarding a woman. Your chest tends to get touched alot. I hope she’s prepared to be molested and messed with by an NBA defense.

To put it politely, you are absolutely wrong. In a finesse sport/competition, a woman can win against men because it isn’t based largely on the physical tools, but if it is a largely physical sport, like basketball, a woman, even if trained like Drago from Rocky, would not have the abilities to compete against well-trained, athletic men.

Also, I’m unsure of your comparison between women sprinters against NBA men. You can say that the woman trained for track would win against NBA players, which is true, but a proper comparison would be one between men/woman sprinters or NBA/WNBA players. In either of those two cases, the men would clearly win and it wouldn’t even be close to be frank.

The reason I mentioned sprinting and crossfit is because that is the upper limit of what woman can athletically achieve at this point in time. Watch a womans crossfitter do the “clean” ladder up to 225 and then deadlift that same weight untill time runs out… or do a workout like FRAN…which I’ve done, and its brutal. I believe that the average NBA player is not at that level nor is it necessary to be that athletic to succeed. Obviously, there’s no way a woman would ever be considered amongst the most athletic at a mans sport, however if the goal is to be an “average” NBA athlete, I don’t see why its not possible. There are some crazy athletic women out there. If one were to train specifically for basketball from a young age and be blessed with the right pyhsical and genetic makeup… all I’m saying is “its possible”. Its just not done.

Looks like I’m not the only one who thinks this way… Neg me all you want.

          http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/201304/battier-well-see-female-nba-player

There are few more respected NBA minds than Shane Battier. The Duke graduate is widely regarded as one of the brightest players in the NBA, and many think he would make an exceptional coach.

In other words, when Battier speaks, people listen.

The 34-year-old weighed in on the topic of a female NBA player, a conversation which has been spurred by Mark Cuban’s interest in drafting Baylor star Brittney Griner. Battier’s answer to the question of whether a female could play in the NBA might surprise some people, seeing as others, like Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma, have laughed at the idea.

Battier told ESPN.com that he thinks a female player will make the NBA, and it could happen soon.

“I don’t know if it’s Griner or if it’s someone who is 5 years old right now,” Battier said. “But we’ll see it. It’ll happen in our lifetime. Just the law of averages.”

Battier knows a thing or two about extraordinary athletes, having played alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Yao Ming in his career. And so he says it’s not entirely impossible for a woman to come along with previously unmatched athleticism.

“I don’t think it would be out of the realm of possibility that [one day] we’ll see a female LeBron,” Battier said. “You could be the most skilled player in the world that the women’s game has ever seen, but that won’t cut it in the NBA. She’d have to be a physical specimen.”

As a female basketball player I think it would be cool if she got in the NBA, but I also realize she’d have no real chance.

The only way I could see a woman ever being able to play in the NBA would be at the point and if she was a superb passer & shooter, sort of like a female Steve Nash, but even then she’d have no chance to guard most NBA PG’s. But Brittney is a post player and has no chance at all against NBA bigs, she’d be undersized and overwhelmed.

However on that note, I think there’s some truth to what Cuban says simply because he likes money. I could see a team taking her as their last pick just for the fact she would sell a lot of tickets and cause a lot of media and internet buzz. Sure she’d probably never actually play except maybe garbage minutes at the end of blowouts but you can’t deny the impact it would make on the media and the teams profits.

    Serious question here,

Will she get a camp invite? Not a contract. No regular season or preseason minutes. A simple camp invite.
