estebansfParticipantHey why do you guys think Austin isn’t mocked in the 2012 draft and is #5 in 2013 on this site.
Playing under K he has gotten better in almost every game overseas (played great in non-us televised game 1), struggled in game 2, ok in game 3, looked like top 5 pick in game #4.
He has grown taller, and looks around 6’5, gained strength, and has gotten quicker since the end of his senior year. If you watch the clip below it looks as if he has D-Wade type althleticism. It’s really good.
Also overseas he made some spectacular passes (was turnover prone too but that may have come off many no-calls in China as the refs were biased) and showed great court vision. K yelled at him some for not hustling back on defense but in game 4, he gave an all out defensive effort and looked like a very good defender.
Just wondering what you guys think even though many of you are very anti-Rivers. Based off of talent, worth ethic, and the fact that his attitude towards teammates and refs looked much better in Dukes 4 recent exhibition games, where do you see him going. He was also less of a ball-stopper, and played within the offense well.

omphalosParticipantRivers doesn’t have anywhere near Wade athleticism. Rivers might be able to make spectacular plays on occasion, but Wade is a machine; he locks up the other team’s best player, runs the break, and breaks down double teams in the half-court. Stamina is a big part of athleticism, and Wade just never stops working when his ire is raised.

WizardofOzParticipantnobody else caught any of the duke chinese jr nat’l team games?
i watched the 3rd one earlier and rivers looked particularly awful yet again. he’s kinda clueless on how to play team basketball and struggled yet again with finishing and shooting. i know it’s early but he’s looking like a 2 yr player at LEAST.
also, these steph curry comparisons couldnt be any further off. austin looks more like a rhythm, streak shooter than a pure shooter. i dont even think he’s a good catch and shoot guy.
the game’s still on espn3 in the replay section if anyone’s bored and needs a bball fix.0 - Posted on: Sat, 08/27/2011 - 1:55am #595127

Cardinal_FanParticipantThe more ive watched Rivers the more ive been unimpressed dating back to the McDonalds game. Rivers just seesm like a very selfish player. Talented…but selfish. Imo if a team is gonna win it has to be his way an thats i believe how he thinks. I truly believe he would rather score 40 points and lose then have 10 in a huge win. He is overrated as a n athlete, he will surprise you every now an then but i wouldn’t consider him explosive. Ive been pro Brad Beal from the beginning because he can get buckets within the flow of an offense, and if he had to go outside it he would be just as effective. Rivers has to have the ball in his hands to be effective and seems like he’s always in a hurry to shoot the ball. If he’s not scoring he really brings nothing else to the table as far as ive seen. If he buys in2 Coach K and disciplines himself tho he could be a special player.

cabbycabParticipantAs of now, he doesn’t seem any better than a good streetballer at the local gym. For a coach’s son, he doesn’t seem to understand the nuances of the game. He just stands around waving his arms around for the ball so he can jack it up.

estebansfParticipantI was basing this more off of the game against Dubai, which was the last game. If you watched that one he looked much better than against China and he seemed to be in the flow of the offense.

akhan786ParticipantHe seems to thrive in a much up tempo type of game. The reason why he was so successful against Dubai was because Dubai played an up tempo pace as well. China however was a more of half-court team with tough physcial defense.
Don’t really get why everyone is freaking out about Austin Rivers…he’s a freshman with only a couple weeks of practice and has a couple months before he suits up for a real game for Duke.
Give the kid some time, I’m sure he’ll figure it out before Spring.

j2khitmanParticipantThe critics are out on Austin Rivers, and for the most part they are correct.
Rivers needs the ball in his hands to dominate a game, he makes too many turnovers, he doesnt play great defense, he wears his emotions on his sleeves, and he takes too many low percentage shots.
OK……so these are concerning issues, but people, this is why he decided to go to Duke. Rivers knew that he needed to work on his flaws in order to be a complete basketball player. Coach K will help Rivers with all his flaws and teach him how to win games and not just fill up the stat sheet.
Rivers is a special player and has tools that can’t be tought. For one, Rivers is a fearless basketball player and plays with confidence that many basketball analysts have compared to Kobe Bryant. This "killer instinct" that Rivers plays with makes him elite among the athletes in his class. He thrives on punishing all those that stands in his way.
Rivers also has a variety of moves that NBA ready and can score in numerous ways. he can shoot, penetrate, pass, take over games, and soon he will be able to play team defense and move without the ball.
The kid is not perfect, but I believe that he can be a top 5 pick in 2013. I don’t recommend that he leaves Duke until his second year, but he can easily be a top 10 pick in 2012. It also doesnt help that he is undersize for a shooting guard and he is not a true point gurad, but the kid can play and is going to be a future allstar in the NBA.

HAMingtonGoiN11ParticipantExpectations are way too high coming into coach K’s system, in high school he was a iso guard with the green light anywhere on the court. His ability to defend will keep him off the floor in crunch time. Got a chance to watch him this summer (jus a pro-am game) but his lateral foot speed look like he was stuck in molasses! Dexter Strickland beat him off the dribble numerous times and just over powered him at the rim. But if Austin stays at Duke 2 years his defense will catch up to his offensive game

Meditated StatesParticipantHe needs to learn how to play in the halfcourt better. NBA is a faster game and will suit his talents. Too early for me to say NBA all star and all that. Looking forward to see how he makes adjustments. Barnes made a lot of adjustments last year too. So lets see how Rivers improves against better players and defenses during the year.

JoeJoParticipantHe just has a lot of things to work on. Eventually I think he’s going to be a fine college basketball player but I’m more unsure about his NBA ceiling. His defense needs work, which can be said about a lot of young players but at the same time, I don’t think he has great defensive tools at his disposal. Improving on things like running back on defense and not getting fooled on back cuts should go a long way however. On offense, he needs to learn how to balance creating his own shot and creating for his teammates. He has black hole tendencies. Coach K tried to rein that in during their overseas trip by pulling him whenever he went shot crazy for a stretch. Playing with such inferior teammates in high school probably didn’t help him in this regard because he had free rein to do whatever he wanted. It’s going to be an adjustment for him playing within a system and with good teammates.
His shot selection during their trip wasn’t as bad as I expected. It was actually pretty good, if sometimes excessive, because he tried to attack most of the time and took long jumpers usually only when he was open. He didn’t do a lot of the dribbling-forever-then-lauching-a-long-jumper routine that he did in high school. He took high percentage shots for the most part.
On paper, he’s a 6’4 SG with okay length and solid, not great athleticism. Wade’s a great athlete; Monta Ellis with his ability to glide in the air and finish acrobatically time and again is a great athlete; Rose is a great athlete; Austin’s not in their class. Not a lot of 6’4 shooting guards become all-stars unless they’re fantastically skilled. If Austin makes the NBA, I see him more as a OJ Mayo than a surefire 25 point game all-star SG.
