Why is Arnett Moultrie not playing? I heard nothing but good things about this kid coming out of college. Also, with Andrew Bynum out you would think they would need a big man more than ever.

This guy should be getting atleast some kind of minutes. He was projected top 5 at a point last year. You can’t tell me kwame brown is a better option. Maybe Doug Collins is just bringing him along slow. Who knows..

Moultrie has no identity on offense and he sucks on defense. He’s not really an energy player either.
He’s not ready for an extended look IMO.

Doug Collins is know for not playing rookies a lot of minutes. Just look at Evan Turner in his rookie year and 2nd year.

I hate the whole “seniority” thing or whatever possesses Collins to not play young guys. Why did we trade away a future first for a 6’11” guy who rides the bench as Spencer fing Hawes plays 22 minutes a night?

A bunch of older coaches who played in the NBA utilize that seniority system.

Kevin McHale is one who usually does that. It was surprising how quickly Chandler Parsons earned minutes in the rotation last year since he was a rookie. I know it’s odd, but it seems to me a lot of these coaches prefer hard working second round picks to first rounders. If I was a GM and knew my coach didn’t play rookies, I’d be trading my draft picks for players going into their second season, rather than trading for more draft picks (ie Darryl Morey).

If Moultrie was better than the players ahead of him in the depth chart, he’d be playing. He’s not, that’s why he’s in the D-League. It’s as simple as that. It’s not like he was some top pick in the draft either. He went 27th overall.
A lot of these kids who relied on raw ability in college not only have to adjust to the pro game but they basically have to learn how to do all the little things in basketball at their position that make someone an effective role player. They’re not stars for their teams anymore.

Malik Wayns is an undrafted rookie and despite being pretty shakey gets more minutes than I expected. Also last year Lavoy Allen earned minutes and was starting by the end of the year so I am not buying the Collins hating rookies argument. I just think he can’t help the team as much as Kwame, Hawes or Allen. Kwame plays very good post defense and even though that is really all he brings to the table it must be more than Moultrie does at this point. I would like to see him get more run myself but I trust Dougs judgement he has done pretty well since he took over the Sixers job.

The NBA has no seniority rule thats nonsense. The reason why Moultrie is not getting rotation minutes is because Collins wants to make the playoffs and push his team to be the best it can be so he is going to play the best players or the players with the least flaws that know themselves and what they are and are not capable of on the floor. Moultrie was drafted to develop into a poor mans Amare Stoudemire and he is currently in his development stage.

Reggie Evans is possible the best rebounder in the league yet he fails to get 20mpg consistantly due to his lack of mobility and offensive skill which means he is a liability in those two regards. Liabilities lose basketball games. Moultrie has yet to prove he can defend, screen, or contribute defensively at an NBA level why would philly play him.

Until Speights got to Memphis and could play all of a sudden. Maybe the Sixers will trade Moultrie this offseason for a late first round pick and draft a guard that can come off the bench who is more consistent than Nick Young. I wouldn’t mind them trading him for a guy like Lorenzo Brown, Brandon Paul or either of the Michigan guards. The Sixers drafted him before they got Bynum and since he didn’t even play yet I really can’t see him getting more minutes anytime soon.

The Sixers could also use a pure SF since they traded away Harkless and Iggy in the Bynum deal.( I would much rather have Harkless and Vucevic right now and have traded Iggy for picks and cap space. It made sense in theory to get Bynum but he is injury prone so it was a big risk that has yet to pay off). I would like to see them try to get an athletic guy like Rodney Williams or a pure scorer like Doug McDermott. Come to think of it I wish those two players just combined into one guy because he would be awesome.

Some coaches are known to not like playing rookies look at Larry Brown in the past, Mike D’Antoni also always used a tight rotation often not employing rookies greatly. Evan Turner was brought along slowly and that looks a good call by Coach Collins also with Iggy on the team then maybe employing them both on court at the same time wasn’t the right option.

Coach Karl at Denver has two very highly regarded big men who cannot get a starting role but I’ve never heard he does not like younger guys starting.

My personal view is if the guy is good enough he goes into rotation but that a season from the bench never harms a rookie, look at Kobe he didn’t start his first two seasons, KG also only started under half the games in his debut season, so making a guy earn his right to move up the bench or ease him into the NBA also holds true.
