Sorry for like the 4th Andre Drummond post of the day, but was just wondering who everyone would have taken out of high school as the better prospect between Greg Oden and Andre Drummond, obviously without being able to know what would happen with Oden’s injuries?

I initially want to say Drummond but that’s because it’s impossible to see where Oden is today, but after thinking about it a while I’d probably say Oden because of the lack of good true 7ft centers in the game these days.

Oden was getting considerably more hype than Drummond and was NPOY his junior and senior year of high school. Drummond is being compared to Amare Stoudemire/ Dwight Howard, but Oden was compared to the likes of hall of famers Bill Russell and David Robinson so I think most and NBA teams and myself would select Oden over Drummond.

Greg Oden is a better prospect coming out of high school IMO. He has better length, defensively he was head and shoulders above Drummond. Offensively, their completely different, Drummond is a 265lbs with a finesse game (A little like Demarcus Cousins), while Oden was a classic traditional low post presence. I like Oden better because of his ability to impact the game defensively, he can anchor a defense all by himself. Offensively, Drummond has a slight edge, although I would like him to use his size a little more down the block, instead of settling for high post.

You gotta go with Oden, imo, he was suppose to be the next dominate big man…he was suppose to be the only competition Dwight is/was gonna have at the C position, Oden was being put in with legendary names since high school, a successful 1-year college career only contributed to that

As far as Drummond, hes being looked at as another athletic, defensive bigman, a great one, but nothing more than Amar’e w/ better defense…however, hes still 17, and could hit a growth spurt by the time the NBA is ready for him, if he reaches that 7’0 category, his hype will skyrocket, even further than it is now, despite already being pinned as the #1 guy

Oden was considered the next big thing when he came out of high school. No one had any clue that he would have had the injuries that he’s been afflicted with. Drummond is good but he’s not getting any where near as much hype as Oden had. Oden was a beast and would’ve out played Drummond if they had played each other. But……. you just never know what the future will bring. It’s too soon to declare a certain player the next big thing. These kind of things are so unpredictable. Believe it or not, Dwight Howard actually had lots of doubters when he came out in 2004 and I was one of them. The memories of Kwame Brown and the 2001 preps-to-pros class was still fresh in many people’s minds. Fortunately for the magic it all worked out. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you’ve accomplished until you are on the big stage going up against the best of the best. Everything before that is just preparation.

I feel bad for Greg Oden, he will never reach the potential so many people gave him and it’s truly unfair that injures can ruin ones career. Also I doubt he would ever admit but being in the NBA is probably more of a burden than a blessing to him right now.

It’s really close, but I’d say Drummond.  Let’s not forget that he still hasn’t played his senior year of high school yet.  He’s much more polished offensively and has the size and athleticism to become a good defender.  He also has some of the best hands on a big guy I’ve seen in a long time.  His hands remind me a lot of Webber, who had some of the best hands for any big man ever to play.

I went and watched some of Oden’s highlights from high school.  Offensively Drummond is by far further along then Oden was and shows much more scoring potential than Oden ever did.  Drummond has more range than Oden did, and can score in more ways.  All Oden really did in high school was dunk, he didn’t really show any offensive polish or post moves.

In terms of size and athleticism, Oden is slightly taller but it appears Drummond has a bigger frame with room to add solid muscle without jeopardizing his athleticism.  Athletically I’d give the edge to Drummond.  He runs the floor like a deer and also has great hops.  Watching Oden in high school he appeared somewhat lethargic when running down the court and also looked stiff moving around the court.  Drummond seems more of a natural athlete than Oden.

Defensively is where Oden has the edge.  He seems like he was a much better shot blocker than Drummond does at this point.  I’d also give the edge to Oden in rebounding.

You guys are right, Oden had much more hype coming out of high school.  But like I said earlier, Drummond hasn’t even played his senior year yet.  I have a feeling the hype train will be in full gear come early 2012.  I just hope Drummond will stay healthy….

If I were a GM, maybe I will first choose oden, a 7-foot center, you can’t miss him But I want to say, oden and drummond is not the same kind of player in a certain extent, they cannot be compared Oden more like traditional 7-footer patron saint inside, and more like like Howard and Amare ,,Drummond is a explosive PF/C like them

Hindsight is always 20/20 and clouds judgement, but Oden was arguably as good of prospect as Lebron. So I would say him rather easily.
