By proxy, yes. I really am a Blazers fan first, but my teams right now are Portland, Miami, Lakers and Toronto. They are the teams I like regardless of what happens, but I am much more of a fan of players rather than teams. College is where I am a die hard fan of one team, University of Oregon, but in the NBA I tend to follow players to whatever team they go too. I was a fan of LeBron James from the first time I saw him, so I always would cheer for him. Used to be that I would cheer for whatever team Shaq was on, hence my big Laker fandom, and I stay loyal to that franchise and cheer for them more often than not. I dislike the Celtics greatly, and recently do not like the Magic or the Thunder. But, I am from Toronto, so I tend to cheer for the Raps. I have family in Portland, so I cheer for the Blazers. I became incredibly emotionally invested in the Heat’s 2006 Championship team, and hence became indebted to Dwyane Wade for making it happen.
So, being a fan of Chris Bosh as a Raptor, and not being a die hard crazy Torontonian who could not see beyond the benefits of leaving this city, I still like him. It is hard to be logical about NBA basketball and be a Raptors fan, but I still cheer for them unless they play any of the three above teams mentioned and wish for them to do well. That is my rationale. I used to be a huge Allen Iverson fan, but I had an experience where I met him and changed my mind. The other players are people I like or who have games that I admire. Much like yours, I am guessing. I try to judge things on the basis of neutrality, but certain things I see about the Celtics, Magic and Thunder make me judge them more harshly than others. What is the deal with your fandom of Jennings though? He is not one of your favorites? Just wondering.

Well, here is my thoughts on Allen Iverson. It may be a petty story, and indeed I should maybe cut him some slack, but my thoughts are that, he does not seem like a cool guy. He seems like a guy who does not take accountability for his actions and constantly blames other people. His whole practice rant and other garbage aside, I would like to know what makes him seem like a cool guy. I guess if you find people trying to be rebels or start trends cool, but they have to stand for something more than just not being conventional. If he did whatever it took to win and was a genuinely cool guy to the people he played with, he would have more of my respect.
Anyway, on with my story. It was March of 2002 (I think), Allen Iverson had been to the NBA Finals the year before (where I was cheering for the Lakers), but, regardless, was my favorite player. I was a huge fan, loved his attitude and thought that he constantly got a bad rep. At this point, he seemed to be the hard working monster scorer who was going to retire a 76er and hopefully get some help to re-up them to the Finals. I had followed AI at Georgetown, where he became my favorite player. I followed his career and thought that he was one of the best in the league, still did for a while after. His birthday was a day after mine, his favorite song happened to be my favorite song as well, he was my favorite player. Little did I know, my family was staying in the same hotel as the 76ers when we visited Seattle (the Supersonics were still a team). I truly did not know we were staying at this hotel, and in complete coincidence, was wearing a Reebok Allen Iverson football jersey and matching hat.
We decided to wait for a bit for them to go to practice, it was not long after we checked in the hotel. Lo and behold, AI walks down and their are maybe like 5 people there, not a significant number. Here I am in all my AI gear, with my little brother holding little pads for an autograph. The whole time, dude pretended to be on the phone, paid no attention to us and we saw him hang up the phone as soon as he got on the bus. Not only that, but his teammates all came down and it took them 20 minutes before they finally left. The next day, AI did the exact same thing, could not care less about the fans or anyone else for that matter. Not to mention, the day of the game he was the last guy on the bus. This really made me question as to why I stuck up for this guy. Maybe people weren’t wrong about him, maybe he really got what he deserved. I respected him and his game, I think he is a great player, but he was no longer one of my favorites.
I actually have an Iverson Bethel HS jersey, I bought it a few years after all of this happened, mostly because it is Lime Green and the most ridiculous jersey I have ever seen (I am one to cop funny things in my wardrobe). I can understand that it must suck to have to sign autographs for people, and everyone has their bad days and things they need to do. I get that, but we got more of the time of day from Eric Sno (no w in his autograph, guess he was in a hurry), Aaron McKie, Dikembe Mutombo and some of the other guys. But, Iverson’s attitude and "swagger", seemed like that of a person you do not want to be like. He just came off as ridiculously arrogant, and this is among other great basketball players. My younger bro works at Nike in LA, so he sees a lot of guys, and he has his favorites, I will not name names, but let it be known that a lot of these guys could stand to take a lesson in treating people like human beings. Yes, they get bothered for autographs and have a lot of pressure, they do not have to be perfect, but they certainly do not have to act like the people they try to avoid. I am sure Allen Iverson may be a nice guy, maybe if I was famous I would be cool with him, but as a huge fan of his who was not asking for much, I was not impressed. I will not make generalizations, but you see what is said and done by some of these guys, they are not perfect. They are great basketball players, you see how they act on the court and you try to judge by their work. Maybe if I met another player I liked and they acted like Iverson, I might change my tune. But, I met Allen Iverson, and I guess you and I have very different definitions of cool.

Well, here is my thoughts on Allen Iverson. It may be a petty story, and indeed I should maybe cut him some slack, but my thoughts are that, he does not seem like a cool guy. He seems like a guy who does not take accountability for his actions and constantly blames other people. His whole practice rant and other garbage aside, I would like to know what makes him seem like a cool guy. I guess if you find people trying to be rebels or start trends cool, but they have to stand for something more than just not being conventional. If he did whatever it took to win and was a genuinely cool guy to the people he played with, he would have more of my respect.
Anyway, on with my story. It was March of 2002 (I think), Allen Iverson had been to the NBA Finals the year before (where I was cheering for the Lakers), but, regardless, was my favorite player. I was a huge fan, loved his attitude and thought that he constantly got a bad rep. At this point, he seemed to be the hard working monster scorer who was going to retire a 76er and hopefully get some help to re-up them to the Finals. I had followed AI at Georgetown, where he became my favorite player. I followed his career and thought that he was one of the best in the league, still did for a while after. His birthday was a day after mine, his favorite song happened to be my favorite song as well, he was my favorite player. Little did I know, my family was staying in the same hotel as the 76ers when we visited Seattle (the Supersonics were still a team). I truly did not know we were staying at this hotel, and in complete coincidence, was wearing a Reebok Allen Iverson football jersey and matching hat.
We decided to wait for a bit for them to go to practice, it was not long after we checked in the hotel. Lo and behold, AI walks down and their are maybe like 5 people there, not a significant number. Here I am in all my AI gear, with my little brother holding little pads for an autograph. The whole time, dude pretended to be on the phone, paid no attention to us and we saw him hang up the phone as soon as he got on the bus. Not only that, but his teammates all came down and it took them 20 minutes before they finally left. The next day, AI did the exact same thing, could not care less about the fans or anyone else for that matter. Not to mention, the day of the game he was the last guy on the bus. This really made me question as to why I stuck up for this guy. Maybe people weren’t wrong about him, maybe he really got what he deserved. I respected him and his game, I think he is a great player, but he was no longer one of my favorites.
I actually have an Iverson Bethel HS jersey, I bought it a few years after all of this happened, mostly because it is Lime Green and the most ridiculous jersey I have ever seen (I am one to cop funny things in my wardrobe). I can understand that it must suck to have to sign autographs for people, and everyone has their bad days and things they need to do. I get that, but we got more of the time of day from Eric Sno (no w in his autograph, guess he was in a hurry), Aaron McKie, Dikembe Mutombo and some of the other guys. But, Iverson’s attitude and "swagger", seemed like that of a person you do not want to be like. He just came off as ridiculously arrogant, and this is among other great basketball players. My younger bro works at Nike in LA, so he sees a lot of guys, and he has his favorites, I will not name names, but let it be known that a lot of these guys could stand to take a lesson in treating people like human beings. Yes, they get bothered for autographs and have a lot of pressure, they do not have to be perfect, but they certainly do not have to act like the people they try to avoid.
