Philly currently has 13 players (Embiid, Simmons, Saric, Covington, Okafor, TLC, Stauskas, Anderson, Holmes, McConnell, Henderson, Bayless, and Long) signed through next season and 5 draft picks (3, 36, 39, 46, and 50). What roster moves should they make in order to make the most of this? They could waive players, trade draft picks, draft players to stash overseas… What do you think they should do?

The minimum regular season roster size will increase from 13 to 14 players under the new deal starting next season.

The maximum roster size will remain at 15.

In addition to the 14 to 15 player roster size, teams can carry up to two players on “two-way contracts” (similar to those which exist in the NHL). Various rules for such contracts are as follows:

“Two-way contracts” will not count against their NBA teams’ cap sheets.

During the term of a two-way contract the player will be eligible to sign a standard NBA contract only with his current team.

The NBA team will have the option to convert a “two-way contract” into a regular minimum salary contract at any time.

If someone OG Anunoby drops like this site predicts the Sixers should trade late into the first round and scoop him up. He might not be ready to play in 2017 but the Sixers obviously don’t mind that. I would give up 39,46 and 50 to get someone with his potential late in the first round. The Spurs at 29 would probably be interested and take some more 2nd round foreign flyers.

Henderson and Long will likely be let go.

Okafor will almost certainly be dealt.

They have the 2nd most valuable team in terms of assets next to the Warriors (dislike alert)

Ben Simmons and 3rd pick both have the value to be traded for all stars. They also have alot of cap room and Lowry is willing to go there. I think they should plan out a very slow rebuilding process and wouldn’t be suprised of the next team to win a championship after the Warriors is the 76ers (in 5 years)

I agree with part of that statement but why would they sign Lowry to help win the title in 5 years. He will be 36 years old by then. If they sign any big name free agents they need to be younger guys that can still be in or near their prime in 5 years when this team is ready to compete for real.

Draft Jackson at 3 (hopefully). They’ll somehow package some of those second rounders to move into the late first round if they see a player they like slipping out of the teens. If Kyle Lowry is truly searching for a big pay day then Philly is his team – he’s not getting max and a ring. Ship Okafor at the deadline. I think the Spurs will want him. Sixers should end the Bayless project and move on from Henderson too. There are much cheaper veteran options than Henderson and I like McConnell over Bayless. Sign Gallinari to give them shooting off the bench. Remaining second rounder(s) to be used on stashed players. Furkan Korkmaz may still come over this year I believe also.

Roster throughout the season should look like:

    C- Embiid
    PF – Saric
    SF – Simmons
    SG – Jackson
    PG – Lowry

    C/PF – Holmes
SF – Gallinari (I’d rather pay him than Covington the following year)
SF – Covington (also can play some small ball four)
    SF/SG – TLC
PG – D. Murray (specialize him on the defensive end)
SG – Korkmaz (assuming he comes over)
PG – Frank Jackson (I think he’ll get attention in the draft – not much PG talk outside of the lottery in the 1st)
    SG – Stauskas
    PG – McConnell
C/PF – sign a veteran big with legit playoff experience

I would try to package Okafor and some of those second rounders. Doubt they can get the Knicks pick at 8 although Porzingas and Oak would be a GREAT combo inside and the Knicks will likely screw up the draft anyway.

Other than that, I would consider trading Okafor to Portland for 20 and 26 plus a contract the Blazers are trying to dump…

what am I trying to do other than that? What about trading 3 and Oakfor to Sacto for 5, 10, and 34?

Sacto gets Josh Jackson as their small forward. Okafor combines with WCS and Papagiannis as their 3 headed center rotation…

At 5 and 10, the Sixers get some combination of Isaac, Tatum, Monk, Smith Jr and Markannen. They then pair these 2 with the uber versatile Ben Simmons, combo forward Dario Saric, super center Joel Embiid, and a couple of solid 3 and D wings in Robert Covington and Justin Anderson. They even have a solid, old-school style floor general at the pg spot in TJ McConnell.

Screw it. I am gonna go YUGE. Trade 3, Okafor, and a second rounder or two to Sacto for 5 and 10.

Take Isaac at 5 as the unicorn small forward. Ben Simmons is running the offense anyway. Try Isaac at the 2.

At 10 take Markannen for an ultra YUGE lineup of Simmons, Isaac, Saric, Markannen, and Embiid. They can add guard depth in the 2nd round and in next year’s draft.  I would target Diallo in the 2018 draft…

You then have a nice small ball bench mob of McConnell, Justin Anderson, Covington, Richaun Holmes, and an extra random big man…

I think that in the second round you target a do-everything combo guard like Nigel Williams-Goss.  I think you can groom Karnowski as a rookie free agent Moneyball version of part-time center/full-time goon ZaZa Pachulia.

Draft Isaac, sign Redick, kill Okafor, marry…oh wait that’s a different game.

Draft Isaac at 3.  Target Peter Jok, Daymeon Dotson, Monte Morris, Derrick White in 2nd round.  Sign JJ Redick to a 3year deal.

But before any of that I call GSW and ask what it would take to acquire Klay Thompson.  He and Draymond and McCaw and Looney are the ONLY ones under contract next year.  They need draft picks to control players, not expensive free agents. Signing Curry and Durant with Green and Thompson will put them over the cap with just those four.  They still need to sign or resign at least 7-8 more guys to field a team.  Maybe they just spend $75 mil towards luxary tax but I’m still calling just to see.  Oh yeah, I wouldn’t really kill Okafor but I would trade him for any wing in the league with a 3pt shot.

They need to find out if a core of Embiid-Simmons-Saric-Covington can stay healthy for a season and progress toward becoming a winning team. Until they know the answer to that I don’t think there’s much point in making many moves. Maybe Jackson is ready out of the gate to join that core and make it better — that’s really the best thing that could happen to them.

If Lowry comes aboard that changes things — they should actually have playoff ambitions then. And maybe they trade some of the other pieces to bring in another veteran, especially one who can shoot.

I know it’s weird, but I have them taking Dennis Smith at the three spot. I feel like he could be a Tristan Thompson type pick for them. You know, a little early for most squads picking at three, but I think he checks the most boxes for the Sixers. With Simmons running the offense, drawing a lot of attention, Covington (Go Tigers!), plus the two Euro-wings, they need a scoring point guard. And I don’t think Lowry’s playing window matches the rest of their roster. Don’t spend that money yet. I also think after individual workouts Smith may shoot himself into the three spot. The NBA is all about shooting and scoring these days.

I like Jackson, he would be a fantastic pick for them also, but I have a feeling he may not be available at three. I think Ball may slide (he has no midrange shot), but I don’t like him as much for the Sixers as Smith. He overlaps too many skill sets they already have. Ball is basically a smaller version of Simmons. Of course they would probably take Ball or Jackson and trade down for Smith plus cash and prizes if they want Smith.

If Smith is the target I think it would be a decent move to trade 3 and Henderson to the Magic for 6 and Hezonja. You can most likely take Smith at 6 and Hezonja still has potential and would immediately help space the floor. I don’t think the Magic would mind moving on from Mario, it hasn’t worked out well there thus far and he could use a change of scenery. If the Magic need a little more Philly could also use those 2nd round picks in the deal.
