Kris Dunn Providence
A National Player of the Year candidate, Dunn boasts a stat line that matches up with the best players in the country. 18.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 7.6 APG, 1.0 BPG and 3.6 SPG on 47.3% from the field, Dunn is only shooting 25% from 3 but shot 35.1% from deep last year, so he should be able to raise that. Dunn has somehow led Provdence to a top 25 ranking (23rd). Dunn was instrumental in a big win over #11 Arizona, where he went 7-9 from the field for 19 points and chipped in 8 assists. Providence lost to Michigan State but Dunn still was able to finish with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Dunn followed up the loss with a triple-double against Hartford, going 8-12 from the field, with 8 rebounds and 14 assists. Dunn also had 15-5-5 in the 74-72 win against URI. What Dunn has been able to do for Providence has been great to watch and one of the more interesting stories in the NCAA this year. Dunn has propelled his stock up on draft boards because he really looks to be an all-around player at the next level. Dunn possesses great size at 6’4", 220 pounds and his physical frame allows him to bully smaller guards and defend point and shooting guards. The walking triple-double contributes even when shooting poorly, as he does so many things to help his team win.
Who’s Hot
Kellen Dunham, Butler
Kellen Dunham was expected to be one of the best players in the Big East this season and though he started out slowly, he has picked it up and is now leading the conference in scoring. Dunham scored 24 points against The Citadel but followed that with a mere 11 points in a blowout over Missouri State. He then struggled with efficiency against Temple (16 points on 5-20 shooting) and Miami (23 points on 6-17 shooting) but has been on fire ever since. Dunham had his best game of the young season when he exploded for 32 points off an impressive 10-15 from the field and 5-8 from deep. Dunham continued to score in a pivotal matchup with #17 ranked Cincinnati, where he went 7-13 from the field (4-9 from three) on his way to 24 points. Dunham had less of a role against Indiana State, only taking 7 shots from the field (he made 6) and finishing with 19 points. Butler has a number of weapons but Dunham is the key to whether this team can be a threat come tournament time. Dunham is a lights-out shooter, but if he can keep his efficiency up, expect him to be in the 25-point range for much of the season.
Henry Ellenson, Marquette
I was critical of Ellenson at the beginning of the season as it appeared he was rushing his shot and his efficiency was affected. But Ellenson has improved greatly, shooting over 50% in all but one of his last 5 games. Ellenson scored 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds in Marquette’s win over Ben Simmons’ LSU team. Ellenson and Marquette beat Arizona State in overtime, where Ellenson grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 18 points. Ellenson had 15, 16 and 23 in wins over Jackson State, Grambling State and Maine. While Ellenson has been able to be efficient from the field, he has also been a factor on the defensive end and had 3 blocks against Arizona State and Grambling State. Ellenson has also shot the three-ball better of late, though he should be getting to the free throw line more. Henry Ellenson has gone from a question mark to a bright spot rather quickly as Marquette will rely on the freshman to put up points and grab everything in sight.
Josh Hart, Villanova
Josh Hart is one of the most consistent players in the country for one of the most consistent teams in Villanova. Hart fits the profile of Villanova, which seems to keep rolling game after game. Hart is averaging 15.3 PPG and the impressive guard has been able to grab 7.4 RPG this season. Hart scored 18 in Villanova’s recent win over Saint Joe’s. He has shot an impressive 49.4% from the field and, aside from a poor game against Stanford (4-13), has really been a rock for this Wildcat offense. Hart is always ready to go off, showcased by his game against Akron where he scored 27 points on 11-21 shooting. The Wildcats, like most good teams, don’t rely on a single player but there’s no question Josh Hart is their main scorer, and an efficient one at that. With Jalen Brunson and Kris Jenkins struggling from the field, Hart and Ryan Arcidiacono will need to keep shooting lights out if Villanova will want to stay hot.
Who’s Not
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, Georgetown
Smith-Rivera was seen as potentially the top player in the conference, but the strong play of Kris Dunn has almost ended the conversation entirely. Smith-Rivera has a potent offensive game, but one that does not figure to translate to the next level. And he has not been that great this season either. He has had moments of brilliance, like the game against MD-E Shore where he scored 30 points on 10-16 shooting. But Smith-Rivera has struggled against big teams. Georgetown pulled off a major upset against Syracuse but Smith-Rivera only went 3-9 from the field, finishing with 11 points. The Hoyas lost a nail biter to Duke, where Smith-Rivera only went 6-14 from the field, finishing with 14 points. He also struggled against Maryland, scoring 14 points on 5-11 shooting. The Hoyas lost to Maryland and Duke by a combined 6 points where their star man scored 14 and less than 50% from the field in both of them. So is Smith-Rivera only a guy that can score on mid- to low-level programs but not good enough when in comes to the top competition? That’s something that scouts will ask come draft time.
Isaiah Whitehead, Seton Hall
I might sound like a broken record when talking about Whitehead, a guy with the potential to be one of the most potent guards in the conference but still one of the more frustrating guys in the Big East. Whitehead is averaging more points (15.7 to 12.0) than last season but is shooting lower from the field (36.4% to 36.7%) Whitehead just cannot put the ball in the basket at an efficient rate like other guys in the conference do. It’s hard to see because when he’s on, he’s electrifying. But we have yet to see Whitehead shoot at least 50% from the field his season. In fact, he’s only had one game (Ole Miss) where he shot at least 40% from the field. Seton Hall only has two losses on the season but if Whitehead continues to shoot this poorly, the losses will start stacking up, especially when conference play starts.
Tyler Lewis, Butler
Lewis, the transfer from NC State, was impressive in his first three games for the Bull Dogs. He scored 17 points in his debut, dished out 10 assists in his second game and had 16 in Butler’s third game over Temple. So what happened to that Tyler Lewis? Lewis struggled against Miami, scoring 3 points. Lewis played much better against SIU ED when he scored 12 and dished out 4 assists, but followed that with 0 in 28 minutes against Cincinnati and 3 against Indiana State. Butler has a host of scorers, highlighted by Kellen Dunham, Roosevelt Jones, Andrew Chrabascz and Kelan Martin, but Tyler Lewis was seen as the point guard to lead this offense. Roosevelt Jones (an impressive passer in his own right) is currently the only guy who averages at least 4 assists, a number that Lewis should no doubt hit. Lewis is lucky that Butler is shooting an impressive 50.9% from the field, but much of the blame will fall on him if Butler should start to cool down.
