Here’s at look at the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s picks for the Fab Five boys basketball players in Broward County.
Scott Barnes | F
University School junior
One of two nationally ranked Sharks stars, Barnes excelled in his first year at U-School. Barnes averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists as a sophomore and won the City of Palms tournament MVP award. Barnes is rated a five-star prospect and the No. 3 prospect in his class and holds offers from Florida, Kentucky, Kansas and more.
Dudley Blackwell | F
Somerset Academy junior
The 6-foot-6 Blackwell averaged 12.4 points, seven rebounds and 5.1 assists as a sophomore with Westminster Academy last season. After helping the Lions to a state title, Blackwell transferred to Somerset Academy. Blackwell is rated the No. 85 prospect in the 2020 class and holds offers from Florida Gulf Coast, Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
Vernon Carey Jr. | F
University School senior
The list of accolades for the U-School senior is too long to list, but it includes the Sun Sentinel’s Class 5A-1A Player of the Year award for boys basketball last year. Carey, who is rate a five-star prospect and the No. 2 player in the 2019 class by 247Sports’ composite ranking, averaged 26 points, 10 rebounds and 11.2 blocks as a junior, winning Florida Dairy Farmers’ Mr. Basketball award. He committed to Duke over Michigan State and North Carolina.
Dallas Graziani | G
Cooper City junior
Graziani earns a Fab Five selection after a breakout sophomore year. He was a first-team All-County pick after averaging 19.6 points and 3.1 steals, highlighted by a 41-point performance against Stranahan in the BCAA Big 8 tournament. He is averaging 32.1 points per game to start this season.
Zaire Wade | G
American Heritage junior
Wade, the son of Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade, is looking to break out this year after averaging 15 points and four assists in AAU. Wade holds an offer from Nebraska.
Broward County Teams to Watch
Blanche Ely
With senior Michael Forrest leading the way, the Tigers captured their seventh state championship — and third in four years — last season. Ely has some key contributors returning to make a run at a second straight title, including Next Five pick Joshua Scott and Aderes Staton-McCray, who is off to a strong start to the season.
Boyd Anderson
The Cobras are looking to improve on their 17-8 record and regional semifinal finish last year. Boyd Anderson picked up a key transfer in former Atlantic forward R.J. Duhart. At 6-foot-9, Duhart provides a large presence in the paint; he is averaging 11.5 points and a team-best 7.2 rebounds to start the season.
Deerfield Beach
Deerfield Beach is looking to get over the hump and get to Lakeland after falling to Wellington in the state semifinals last year. The Bucks have won their first four games to start the season. Senior guards Victor Robinson and Michael Johnson are both poised to have strong years, which will be key to keeping Deerfield among the top teams in Broward County.
University School
The Sharks are the favorites to repeat as Class 5A champions, and why wouldn’t they be? U-School, under new coach Jim Carr, returns superstar center and Duke commit Vernon Carey Jr. and five-star junior forward Scott Barnes. With several solid players backing them up, the Sharks should be set this season.
Westminster Academy
Westminster Academy, looking for its third straight Class 4A state champions, lost one of its top players in Zachary Scott. But the Lions do return several key players from last year, including first-team All-County pick and Next Five selection Chase Johnston and fellow Next Five pick Sam Griffin.
