Flyin' to the Hoop: Top Prospects

Wed, 01/30/2019 - 5:04am

Flyin’ to the Hoop always has a great blend of National talent and local (Ohio) talent, and this year was no different. With a combination of close games and blowouts, there were plenty of takeaways from the event. The All-Tournament Team included Ryan Hall, Jaden Springer, Nimari Burnett, Samari Curtis, Terry Armstrong, and Meechie Johnson.

NCAA Power 16 Rankings

Mon, 01/28/2019 - 9:04pm

Kentucky jumping into the top 5 and Kansas falling to 15 were the most noteworthy moves of the week and the result of their Saturday match up. Kentucky appears to be back on track as a potential Final Four contender that can challenge Tennessee for supremecy in the SEC.

Kansas on the other hand has never looked more vulnerable with their streak of Conference Championships on the line. There wasn't a great deal of movement at the top, but here is a look at this week's Power 16, including top five players of the week.

The Zion Paradox

Mon, 01/28/2019 - 1:54pm

It requires not a love for stats, nor the gift of athletic assessment, or really more than a cursory interest in sports to know that what Zion Williamson is doing at Duke this season as a freshman is special. Merely turn on your television or scroll through headlines and you’re assailed with Zion plaudits and all manner of coverage announcing him as not the next, but perhaps the current, great thing. And for what he’s doing at a collegiate level, at such a young age, against the highest level of competition he can play, it is irrefutably special.

What. A. Week. Duke goes down, allowing Michigan to take the top spot, then Michigan goes down seemingly opening the door for Virginia, then Virginia goes down which launches Tennessee up to the number one team in the country. That sequence right there is enough to make it one of the best weeks in basketball, but there is much more that went down.

This is why we love conference play. The madness that occurs week-in and week-out is what makes college basketball so exciting to watch. The No. 1 team suffered their second loss on the year after barely survivng a few nights earlier, North Carolina got a ranked win and got blown out in the same week, and seemingly everybody lost in what is one of the best weeks of basketball to date.

NBA Sophomore Watch

The 2017 NBA Draft class received a lot of criticism during last season, as many thought it was a weak, shallow class. Fast forward a year later, and it looks like the 2017 NBA Draft class may end up producing a number of future all-stars, along with 2016 #1 pick Ben Simmons, who is a lock to make the All Star Game this season unless he gets injured. Aside from the five best players in this class, there are several other solid players, making it a deep draft class as well. Let’s take a look at my top-10 NBA sophomores.

Sure, the NFL playoffs have started and the NCAA football season is coming to a close, but the NCAA basketball season got into the meaty part of the season and it did not disappoint. It was an extremely entertaining and action-filled week in which it felt like everybody lost. There were top ten matchups, big time upsets, and more than enough close games to satisfy the college basketball fans of the world this week.
