ALL-USA Central Indiana boys basketball Super Team

The five-member first team of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Central Indiana boys basketball Super Team provided several thrilling moments this season and throughout their respective careers.

Southport’s Joey Brunk, Franklin Central’s Marcus Burk, Lawrence Central’s Kyle Guy, Tech’s C.J. Walker and North Central’s Kris Wilkes —  four seniors and a junior (Wilkes) — were selected to the first team by IndyStar. Here is a closer look at the players:

Joey Brunk, Southport (Sr.)

There was pressure on Brunk and the Cardinals to end a sectional title drought that extended to 2000. Southport broke through this season, winning the program’s first sectional in 16 years and first regional since 1990. Brunk, a 6-10 Butler recruit, averaged a career-high 18.3 points and 8.2 rebounds to lead Southport to a 22-7 record and a 4A semistate appearance. After transferring from Park Tudor, he scored 1,256 points at Southport to rank fifth in school history.

Marcus Burk, Franklin Central (Sr.)

The 6-3 Burk led the Flashes to a fourth consecutive sectional title as one of the top scorers in the state. Burk averaged 25.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.1 steals as a senior and shot 41 percent (91-for-224) from the 3-point line. Burk, who is uncommitted for college, scored 30 or more points in a game eight times as a senior, including a 36-point game in an 81-80 loss to Evansville Reitz in a 4A regional.

Kyle Guy, Lawrence Central (Sr.)

The 6-2 Guy, the state’s lone McDonald’s All American selection, led Lawrence Central to a 19-7 record, its highest win total in 20 years. Guy averaged 23.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists and shot 43 percent (63-for-146) from the 3-point line as a senior. The Virginia recruit also shot 86 percent from the free-throw line (133-for-154). Guy graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,614 points.

C.J. Walker, Tech (Sr.)

Walker, a 6-foot Florida State recruit, finished his career with 1,598 points to rank second in school history. The point guard helped Tech to a Class 4A state title as a sophomore and to two City tournament titles. Walker averaged 24.6 points, 5.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 steals as a senior to lead the Titans to an 18-6 record. He also set a Tech single-game scoring record with 53 points against Pike.

Kris Wilkes, North Central (Jr.)

The 6-8 Wilkes, one of the top junior recruits in the country, led North Central to a 22-4 record, sectional title and a No. 1 record for much of the season. Wilkes averaged 22.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots and shot 57 percent from the field as a junior. The Panthers tied for their highest win total in five seasons. Wilkes has offers from Butler, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Purdue, UCLA, Vanderbilt and Xavier.

Second team

Two seniors were named to the second team — Cathedral’s Eron Gordon and Howe’s Kip Warren. The 6-2 Gordon, who is uncommitted for college, averaged 19 points and five rebounds a game as a senior as Cathedral finished 17-6. The 5-11 Warren, also uncommitted for college, led Howe to the Class 2A state finals for the first time as he averaged 22.9 points and 7.5 assists.

Three juniors — Park Tudor’s Jaren Jackson Jr., Pike’s Justin Roberts and Southport’s Paul Scruggs — were also named to the second team. The 6-10 Jackson averaged a team-high 16.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 blocked shots per game as Park Tudor finished 20-5. The 6-3 Scruggs averaged 19.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists to help Southport to a regional title. The 6-foot Roberts averaged 16.8 points, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals per game as a junior to help Pike to a Marion County title. Jackson, Scruggs and Roberts are all uncommitted.

Third team

Three seniors — Lawrence Central’s Mekhi Biffle, Noblesville’s John Kiser and Pike’s Justin Thomas — were named to the third team. The 6-2 Biffle teamed with Guy to lead the Bears to a 19-win season as he averaged 16.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Thomas, a 6-foot guard, averaged 15.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 steals as a senior. The 6-5 Kiser led Noblesville to a 14-9 season as he averaged 21.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

The other players named to the third team are Hamilton Southeastern junior Zach Gunn and Lawrence North sophomore Kevin Easley. The 6-6 Gunn averaged 17.2 points and 8.6 rebounds as HSE improved from nine wins to 14. The 6-7 Easley led a balanced 19-6 Lawrence North team as he averaged 11.7 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Honorable mention

Twenty-six players were also named honorable mention:

Juniors: Mark Albers, Pendleton Heights; Josh Brewer, Ben Davis; Sterling Brown, Carmel; Michael Ertel, Mt. Vernon; Courvoisier McCauley, Manual; Mateo Rivera, North Central; Jon Ross Richardson, Lapel; Christian Stewart, Roncalli; Kobe Webster, Park Tudor.

Sophomores: Eric Hunter, Tindley; Tyler Watson, Tri-West.

Freshmen: Isaiah Thompson, Zionsville.
