Alabama 101, Mississippi 88: Alabama rolls behind Brandon Austin and Dazon Ingram, wins all-star game

On a team full of elite prospects and future college players, it’s sometimes difficult for all-star teams to share the ball.

Alabama had no such problem Friday night.

Four players reached double figures in scoring – Alabama signee Dylan Smith with 12 apiece – in a 101-88 victory over Mississippi in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic boys game at Alabama State’s Acadome in Montgomery.

“Our rule was to play hard and play unselfish,” Alabama coach Charles Burkett said. “Everything that those guys did was on their own, with no direction from the coaches. Those guys are all solid basketball players and understand the game.”

Ingram and Smith added four assists each, Hall had 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, and Ingram had two steals.

Five Mississippi players reached double-figure scoring – MVP Leroy Buchanan with 20, Quinndary Weatherspoon with 12 and Bruce Stevens, Jerekius Davis and Moses Greenwood with 10 apeice.

Alabama trailed for much of the first half, but used a 12-2 spurt to take a 53-50 halftime lead and then pulled away after intermission.

-- Star of the game: Ingram won the MVP and Austin was the leading scorer, but the 6-foot-11 Hall, an Alabama signee, flashed an all-around game that should excite Bama fans. He made his only 3-point attempt, looked fluid running the floor and was the only player with a double-double.

-- By the numbers: 5, rebounding edge for Alabama, which outrebounded Mississippi 53-48. … 1, 3-pointer made in the second half by Mississippi, which made just 5-of-29 in the game and 1-of-10 in the second half. … 4, straight victories for Alabama in the series. Alabama now leads 14-11 all-time. ... 18, assists for each team.

-- Memorable moment: Hall, trailing a Mississippi fastbreak, delivered an emphatic block in the second half when he swatted the ball like a volleyball. "I thought he was going to go up a little stronger," Hall said. "That's why I hit it so hard."

-- Quotable: "It meant a lot to play my final high school game with some of my best friends," Smith said. "We just looked for each other and shared the ball."

“We came to win,” Hall said.

“I got my teammates involved and they knocked down some shots,” Ingram said. “I was able to get the rack and finish. … We’ve got the best players in the state. That’s a powerhouse team.”
