Wisconsin's Bo Ryan says he will retire after next season

Wisconsin Badgers head coach Bo Ryan says he will coach the Badgers one more season.

Wisconsin men's basketball coach Bo Ryan seriously considered retiring after his team's national championship game appearance in April. But after conversations with athletic director Barry Alvarez, he decided to take some time and think it over.

"I have done that," Ryan, 67, said in a statement released Monday. "I considered retiring this summer or coaching one more season. ... I've decided to coach one more season with the hope that my longtime assistant Greg Gard eventually becomes the head coach at Wisconsin. I am looking forward to another year with our program, including our players, my terrific assistant coaches, our office staff and everyone who supports Wisconsin basketball here in Madison, around the state and across the country."

Ryan's Badgers came up short against Duke in a thrilling NCAA championship game, the first Ryan had coached in at the Division I level. He's had a remarkable career at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to back-to-back Final Four appearances in the last two years and four Big Ten regular-season championships over the course of his 14 seasons in Madison (357-125, .741 winning percentage). He is a four-time Big Ten coach of the year, and he reached the NCAA tournament every single season he's been at Wisconsin.

Prior to coaching at Wisconsin, Ryan excelled at Wisconsin-Platteville, leading the program to four Division III national championships.
