Sophomore guard Trevor Cooney
Syracuse, N.Y. — After redshirting his freshman year, Trevor Cooney struggled to find his shooting stroke last year.
Cooney, a 6-foot-4 guard who came to SU billed as an accurate 3-point shooter, managed to hit just 26.62 percent of his 3-point shots. He averaged 3.4 points in his limited role off the bench behind veteran two-guard Brandon Triche.
Cooney started all four of SU's exhibition games in Canada in August, beating out Michael Gbinije for the job. Syracuse will need Cooney to put his struggles behind him and there's hope that all he needs is the opportunity to play.
Last season, Cooney saw double-digit minutes in 10 Big East games (regular season and tournament). He was 9-for-28 from the 3-point line in those games. That's 32.1 percent. Not great, but much better than his numbers for the rest of the year.
Gerry McNamara, who coaches the SU guards, had this to say about Cooney.
