Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse basketball recruit Chris McCullough achieved a qualifying score on an ACT and expects to be here next month to start summer school, a source said this morning.

McCullough, a 6-foot-9 forward from the Bronx, is one of two Orange recruits in the 2014 class. He had been waiting for a test score that would allow him to attend classes at SU this summer.

McCullough said earlier this week that he was confident his performance on two recent standardized tests would enable him to play at Syracuse as a freshman.

"I know I did pretty good," he said. "I studied hard and had a tutor to help me."

The source, who is close to the McCullough situation, said McCullough received those test scores yesterday.

"He's really excited," the source said.

McCullough's high school coach, John Mahoney, said in an interview earlier this month that McCullough had worked diligently in the classroom since he arrived last winter at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. McCullough, said Mahoney, gained confidence in his academics as the year progressed.

"He worked his butt off," Mahoney said. "He really did."
