NBA Comparison: Luke Harangody

Strengths: Decent 3-point shooter (36%, but only 29% senior year)… Great rebounder… Knows how to position himself under the rim… Has been on winning teams (lost in championship freshman year and won championship sophomore year)… Works hard off the court, strong work ethic… Works hard on the court, knows when and how to work for a rebound… Knows how to run the floor after four years in UNC’s transition offense… Crafty player. Great array of mid-range shots (runners, jumpers, floaters, fades) and uses the glass very well around the basket… Smart player, great positioning offensively… Decent passer out of the low post… Has experience handling the ball in UNC’s fast-paced offense… Can heat up quickly… Good, strong screener… Lots of hustle, goes to the floor and always gives his all …

Weaknesses: Lacks speed in the opn floor and particularly laterally … he will really struggle to keep up with NBA athletes on the defensive end … Not a great athlete, will not outrun or out-jump anyone… Mediocre free throw shooter for his overall shooting ability (just 67% at UNC)… Not big or athletic enough to guard the four at the next level… Certainly not big enough to guard the NBA five position… Needs to prove he can consistently make the three (40% then 43% sophomore and junior year but 29% senior year)… Not very explosive and is forced to rely on the mid-range instead of getting to the basket … Not a shot blocker by any means … Disappears for stretches during games … Won’t be able to get off his shots as consistently with bigger defenders on him… Older player, not much room for improvement…

Outlook: Luke Maye is an extremely crafty and smart player, but he will have to prove that he can shoot the NBA 3 if he wants to make a roster … Maye could be a late second-rounder but will most likely go undrafted … His relative lack of explosiveness and athleticism forces him to rely on his creative mid-range game, but in the modern NBA he will have to play the stretch four role to earn minutes … Maye projects as an undersized rebounder in the NBA, but his defense will have to improve and he will have to find a consistent long range shot … If he can;t carve out a role in the NBA, he could potentially find a spot in Europe …

Notes: Born 3/7/1997, Maye measures 6’8 and 240 pounds from Huntersville, NC. A former walk on, he was on UNC’s runner up and championship teams as a freshman and sophomore. Made the famous transition jumper in UNC’s 2017 Elite Eight game against UK. Had disappointing runs in 2018 and 2019 as a 2 and 1 seed.
