COLUMBIA, S.C. – If the old cliché is true that competitive practices make for strong teams, then North Carolina fans can be reassured in knowing that the Tar Heels should still be lingering near the top of the polls in a couple of years.

On Friday night, opening night at the Chick-fil-A Classic, Hammond (Columbia, S.C.) combo guard Seventh Woods, a senior, and Mullins (Mullins, S.C.) combo guard Jalek Felton, a junior, gave us a look of what practices will look like in Chapel Hill come 2017.

In the end, Woods did a little bit of everything (13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks) to lead Hammonds past Mullins, 79-49.  Felton scored 25 points in the loss.

“Everyone wanted to see the matchup and that’s always fun because we’re both competitors,” said Woods, who added that this makes him 2-1 in head-to-head matchups against his future teammate. “In the end we both came out and just played our games and did our best to get our teams the win.”

There were, however, a few competitive exchanges; like when Woods clobbered Felton on his dunk attempt and made him earn it at the free-throw line or when each player took turns swapping the ball from the other in one series.

“Just knowing that I’ll have one of the top guards in the country to get better with in practice is big for me,” Woods said. “He’ll be coming my sophomore year, but he’s gonna be ready from day one. I’m just glad we’re on the same team.”
