Jonas Valanciunas

| |
The story on day two was once again the rising star that is
Jonas Valanciunas. He's a year younger
than most of the competitors here and he's easily been the most impressive. At
just 16 years of age (he'll turn 17 next week) Valanciunas has shown a lot of
potential as a future NBA player.
At 6-10, he has tremendous agility, running the floor particularly well. He altered
shots and grabbed boards, using his length and athleticism to convert on a number
of dunks. Rytas cruised to victory behind his 23 points on 8-13 fg and 7-8 ft
including 11 boards. It appears that he's not done growing and could top out at
well over 7-feet.
What made this even more impressive was the fact that his playing time was limited
to just 22 minutes after he got into foul trouble in the first half. He showed
good discipline playing the end of the 2nd quarter and throughout the second half
without picking up any further fouls.
Union Olympia's star guard Mirza Sarajlija was the one bright spot as he was hot
from outside dropping 6-11 from 3 and finishing with 22 points.
Rytas was able to build a double digit lead in the first half and cruised to victory
behind Valanciunas and their lead guard Augustas Peciukevicius who has been playing
through an injury (8points and 5 assists). Augustas was more impressive last year
but is began to show some solid play today.
KK Hemofarm 76 – Gran Canaria 67
This game was much closer than the score would suggest.
Canaria had a great chance to win this one but let it slip away in the final minutes.
They fought their way back into the game with help from the loudest fans of all
the junior teams (Unicaja's).
Behind the chants of "Beo Beo" they closed a double digit lead to bring
the game to even with 3 minutes left. Unfortunately some bad decision making and
poor ball protection derailed their upset bid.
Hemofarm's 6-7 combo forward Nemanja Knezevic scored virtually at will facing
the basket from midrange and using the dribble to get to the basket. Knezevic
had a game high 21 points on 8-9 shooting.
Hemofarm's most impressive guard thus far has been Milan Vulic who has good athleticism
and plays with a lot of energy. He knocked down 3-4 from 3 and finished with 15
points. Hemofarm has around 3-4 big versatile guards who all play sound fundamental
ball. None of them appear to have NBA potential, but they're all solid European
prospects.
Gran Canaria's forward Samuel Dominguez was credited with 6 offensive rebounds
but that number may have shortchanged him by 3-4. He scored 11 with most of those
coming off of tip ins and rebounds.
Canaria's speedy point guard Oscar Alvarado had another inspired effort keeping
his team in the game with 13 points, 6 boards, 6 assists and 4 steals, and most
impressive 15 fouls against. Canaria's athletic 2-guard Alejandro Lopez had 13
points but a dreadful 7 turnovers including a few that came with the game on the
line.
FMP 81 – Unicaja 57
FMP blew the game wide open early and kept Unicaja from making any real runs in
the second half keeping the lead around 15 for most of the game.
After a lucky win against an inferior Alba Berlin squad on day 1, FMP made short
work of a well supported Unicaja team. FMP has become a powerhouse junior team
having rolled through this competition last year in Madrid. They appear to be
the favorites again this year although they lack any real standout talents. Bigman
Dejan Musli continues to improve his body, but his NBA potential is limited due
to a lack of speed and athleticism.
For FMP, it was a balanced effort for their main guys. Dejan
Musli checked in with 11 pts and 17 rebs but shot just 4-13. Nenad Miljenovic
came off the bench to score a game high 13 on 6-9 shooting. Nikola Vukasovic had
12 while Branislav Dekic had 11.
Senegal's Malik Fall was impressive for Unicaja using his length and agility to
score around the basket and grab boards. His 12 and 7 both both team highs. Brazilian
Augusto Lima has been a bit of a disappointment
thus far showing limited skill and dexterity. He finished with 5 pts (2-9 fg)
and 7 boards with 5 turnovers after a double double on day one. Unicaja struggled
mightily from the line hitting just (7-19) 37%.
FMP and Rytas are the only two unbeatens left and appear headed for a collision
in the final on Sunday.
Motepaschi Siena 82 – Alba Berlin 76
Appearing shell shocked from their last minute collapse against FMP yesterday,
Berlin was down 13-2 early. They clawed back into the game but ultimately fell
short dropping to 0-2.
Neils Giffey led all scorers with 27 points and 12 boards, knocking down 3-4 from
3 and 11-17 overall. Giffey is an agile 6'6 wing with good athleticism although
he still has a ways to go skill wise with ball handling and perimeter skills.
For Siena, Nunzio Sabatino finished with 20 getting to the line 16 times and hitting
half of those. Nika Metriveli has 17 (7-10 fg) and 9 while Tomaso Ingrosso had
13 and 9.
Hemofarm has around 3-4 big versatile guards who all play sound fundamental ball. travesti None of them appear to have NBA potential, but they're all solid European prospects.
