Kings Cup 2008-09
Let's just say it..., the team that was supposed to win... won.
Pete MickaelTaugres, Vitoria was the undisputed favorite and almost slipped up when the Aito led team from Malaga pushed it into OT. A BIG note* is to be made here. Malaga made it a game and did it w/o the Nash-like PG Carlos Cabezas (who, if rumors are confirmed, may be heading to the BIG SHOW, the one and only NBA).
TAU had previously steamrolled over Pamesa Valencia, served up a dominating, solid defeat to FC Barcelona and squeezed by in the OT Final vs. Malaga. Final score: 100-98
Pete Michael was the undeclared MVP... handily handing the King's Cup to Sponsor Taugres with a near perfect overtime exhibition (Rebounds, Assist, Scoring, Defending) having a dominatingly, great tournament and by hitting BIG shots and making STOPS. A miscued organizational voting system gave the MVP trophy to Teletovic (who had a good tournament and final but was in no way, shape, or form the MVP, [yo... he shot an air-ball in the OT Final!]). Congrats Pete. Congrats Teletovic (rewarded w/ 5 year renewal with TAU). Oh yeah... and the NBA missed him... too.
TAUgres is a Euro Powerhouse. They are the Bob Cousey, Bill Russell and John Havlicek Celtics of Europe. You might catch them off guard... but, beating them is another story. Disciplined execution and fundamentally sound, they use rapid, interwoven coordination as the assassin. Military-like in precision, a lot of talent and size and on any given night TAU could beat a lot of NBA teams.
Unicaja, Malaga, as mentioned w/o Carlos Cabezas, (the master mind of so many past victories for this Club) gave TAU all they could handle. No Carlos, meant the head was missing from the beast. Sub-PG Gomis was "valiant" but not up to the task. You can't easily replace the PG on the FIBA 2006 World Championship "Gold" Spanish National Team as was evident in those clutch, crunch-time minutes of this Kings Cup final.
Estudiantes, Madrid (While only being included by geography) was tagged as the weakest of the 2009 Tournament. In the ACB they were, until a few recent wins, a candidate for demotion to LEB Gold League. However!, "ESTU" had a shot at the final after beating Joventut and only bowing to finalist Malaga in mid fourth quarter. Final was 78-71
FC Barcelona. is so dependent on Navarro it's painful to watch them play when he's not "sensational" as he was the day before (when he single handily and sensationally eliminated Real Madrid). Anyway, (in the Semis) Tau closed the door on Barcelona by halftime. End of story. FC Barcelona ... back to the drawing board.
Ricky Rubio
Joventut, Badalona was Ricky Rubio and little more. Various injuries, new American (Koby Karl) and some on the floor confusion condemning them to quick exit. Rubio held them together but was not enough.
Pamesa, Valencia never had a chance. A Club and team in constant turmoil. The coaching change has not helped much. An "eternal" "also ran"; or one of eight bridesmaids who can't catch those damn flowers.
Real Madrid is in trouble. Winning games in the Euroleague does not mean anything in the ACB or the King's Cup. Real is a team looking for its identity and a style to call its own and now has large problems to resolve.
As always at the Spanish Kings Cup, the Organization was top rate but as usual the music and PR system needs some tuning and coordination. Impossible to chat even between games! Gets boring.
Special mention has to be made regarding the "air circulation system" as in "none to speak of" the court started to show signs of condensation and players began sliding. Did anybody notice?
Madrid is a great city of the world with some serious cuisine. The architecture, museums and style of the city make it always remarkable to visit and experience. It's a classy joint.
Finally, the ACB, even with the economic crisis, is doing one helluva job.

I like spanish basketball, they play very well. I read on the latest sports news that maybe 2 new spanish players will play soon in NBA.
Ekene Ibekwe - 6'9 220 - A player to watch this summer in the NBA summer leagues. He played well in Phoenix's final summer game last summer.....I really liked what I saw in that game.
Since his All-ACC First Team defense performance his final year at Maryland, he has played in Israel, France, and now Turkey. He came on strong in France last year and looks real good against the likes of Robert "Tractor" Traylor, etc.
Ibekwe is playing in the TIBL in Turkey and currently has the 2nd Highest efficiency rating of any player in the entire league. He is in the Top 10 in the league in both scoring and rebounding. Has had highs of 31, 29, 26 points.....15 boards...4 blocks.
He is SO MUCH better offensively than when he was at Maryland (2 yeras ago) and he has gotten much tougher around the hoop.
He would fit the systems of: San Antonio, LA Lakers, Chicago, Charlotte, Phoenix and Atlanta....maybe also Houston or New Jersey.
I believe he'll open quite a few eyes this summer....
